Our friends in Auckland Orienteering Club, Cunties Manukau Orienteering Club and Orienteering NZ with whm we cperated t deliver Orienteering and Wrld Masters. All ur setters and cntrllers and crdinatrs in additin t the 11 races in Oceania and Wrld Masters, we delivered 8 nrmal club events!

2 Mike and Renee Beveridge and their team wh delivered the Auckland Secndary Schl Sprint Series fr anther successful year. The Mre family - Alan, Julia, Ryan and Kyla - wh have becme such an imprtant part f the Nrth West family, but wh will sn be mving t Christchurch. Thank yu fr friendship and cntributin - and g with ur best wishes. My family, Sheridan, Tahi, Quinn and Lauren, wh have supprted me in my lve fr rienteering and my service t this club. Oceania / Auckland Wrld Masters Games 2017 The best Wrld Masters ever Over 1800 entries fr bth events. Hsted in partnership with Orienteering NZ, Auckland Orienteering Club and Cunties Manukau Orienteering Club, and sme amazing vlunteers frm arund the cuntry - a massive team effrt. Legacy benefits include: 7 new maps and 5 maps updated between 3 clubs. New landwner relatinships New equipment and sftware Upskilling ur vlunteer base Bsted internatinal reputatin Financial benefits TBC (wash-up is still being finalised but is likely t be net-psitive fr Nrth West) Leadership Gvernance We have cntinued t carry ut Exec s legal & strategic rles. Review f ur club cnstitutin remains n hld pending the intrductin f the new Incrprated Scieties Bill, and subsequent advice frm Sprt NZ and Orienteering NZ. It is nt certain when the bill will be intrduced int Parliament. In the meantime, Nrth West des nt have t wait fr a law change t rerganise ur club business; we have begun reassessing what wrk we need/want t d, hw it shuld be divided acrss rles, and wh might fit the rles. Fr eg: Secretary rle has traditinally invlved bth public-facing crrespndence and a secretariat functin in the cmmittee

3 (agenda and minutes etc). In 2018 we will trial dividing these int tw separate rles. Treasurer rle has traditinally handled membership crrespndence. New members need frequent cmmunicatin frm the club as they becme familiar with ur sprt and hw the club perates. In 2018 we will trial a rle respnsible fr cmmunicatin with new members. Health and safety systems develped fr Oceania have been adapted fr club use. We expect t eventually adpt the ONZ Health & Safety System which is under develpment. The club has made submissins t Auckland Cuncil n the develpment f reginal parks at Te Muri and Te Arai (thanks t Geff Mead), and t the develpment f the Sprts Facility Pririty Plan led by Aktive Auckland Sprt and Recreatin. Management We have cntinued t carry ut ur peratinal rle t a high standard. I am remain especially indebted t ur Secretary, Jenny Cade and Treasurer, Lisa Mead fr their capability & dedicatin. Online membership system went live in January During the year we have been familiarising urselves with the database and learning hw t respnd t what the data tells us. Fr eg: Image 1 (belw) displays the age distributin f ur membership. Tw clear spikes emerge , and year lds. This gives us sme clues abut hw t meet the needs f ur members. One explanatin fr this distributin is that teenagers and their parents are chsing t jin ur club tgether. The next step invlves taking actin based n these insights. There is als a lng tail frm Our yungest member is 2 and ur eldest member is 84! 2018 membership renewal (and new registratins) will be handled by members thrugh the assciated club website. Our new website went live in the week befre Oceania! Alan Mre led the bth the nline membership and website prjects, with supprt n website frm Ryan Mre, Jula Macmillan, Owen Means and I. Alan s methdical apprach and clear cmmunicatin meant there were very few errrs r false starts during either prject. We nw enjy: an updated nline presence website with cntent-management-system and newsletter functins nline sales functin

Skill Sets Current Executive Cmmittee cntains a range f expertise and experience. We have have yet t cnsider ur immediate r future skill-set requirements.

5 Lack f successin planning fr Exec is an nging risk. Fundamentals Access t Terrain Harvesting in Wdhill Frest is causing nging impacts t access fr rienteering and ther frest users. This is putting increased pressure n the areas f standing frest. But, access t new areas in the nrthern end f the frest is cming n-line, and significant new areas have been mapped fr Oceania/Wrld Masters Games Lss f access t Wdhill remains a risk. Our relatinship with Ngā Maunga Whakahii Kaipara develped psitively thrugh Oceania and Wrld Masters Orienteering Champs. We lk frward t nging cperatin with Ngā Maunga Whakahii Kaipara. Other terrain lss is imminent. Slater Rd frest is due t be harvested in the near-term, and the Hedley Rd farm is up fr sale and carries sme risk t ur access. This highlights the nging need t remain practive in identifying and pening up new terrain. Maps The vast majrity f Nrth West maps are f high quality. All ur map files are well maintained. Significant new mapping was undertaken fr Oceania/Wrld Masters Games Lake Rtta Lake Kereta Auckland University Wynyard Quarter Temu Rad Hedley Dunes In the lng term wnership f these maps will be distributed between Nrth West & Auckland Orienteering Clubs althugh details are t be cnfirmed. Map extensins/updates have ccurred at Hedley Rd, White Line and Riverhead. Further mapping is planned fr 2018, in Wdhill and Riverhead frests. Curses Curse-setting and cntrlling is dne t a high standard.

6 Dwindling numbers f experienced setters and accredited cntrllers is nw a significant risk. Equipment Equipment and electrnics are f acceptable-t-high quality. Equipment and electrnics are kept in safe and accessible strage. Exec adpted a self-insurance plicy t ensure we retain sufficient funds t replace lst/damaged/stlen/end-f-life equipment that is nt therwise insured. Thanks t Kumeu Strage wh are prviding Nrth West with a free strage unit. Thanks t Marquita Gelderman, Camern De-Lisle, Mike & Kaye Knightbridge fr their care f club gear thrughut the year. Camern De Lisle has been ur SprtIdent guru this year. He ran a well attended training sessin fr members where we learned hw t use the SI system. Gene Beveridge built the AR Sandbx unveiled at Natinals - a fascinating new tl fr learning t understand cnturs. Cmpetitin Auckland Orienteering Series has cntinued in name. It is still nt bvius that the actual cmpetitin itself was any livelier than befre the name-change. N pints were recrded r titles awarded, fr lack f vlunteer energy. A thrugh review f AOS cmpetitin structures was put n hld n hld until after Oceania/Wrld Masters Games Hwever, n further discussin has ccurred t date. In 2018, fllwing the schl sprint series, we will trial a new Auckland Secndary Schls Frest Series in an attempt t bring schls cmpetitin int the frest, and prvide a build up t Auckland Secndary Schl Champs. This will be run alngside club AOS events which have been scheduled t create a cherent cmpetitin. Culture Invest in engagement

7 Nrth West cntinues t invest in activities that prmte psitive experiences and friendships fr ur members, because we believe that engaged members are ur greatest asset. Thus, we have: Run events and trainings Paid team entries fr Kata P Night Relay and AOC training day Made financial cntributins twards the csts f junir camp, Australian Schls Champs, JWOC, WOC. Cmmunicated thrugh website, facebk and newsletter. Held pst-event picnics Subsidised a club trip t Natinals in Hawkes Bay with 70+ members staying tgether - a great weekend! Mapped ur shared accmdatin t hld a fun egg & spn relay Ryan Mre created the map based ff phts and vide ff the internet! We intrduced a secnd club shirt; a T-Shirt cut as an alternative t the race tp. Nrth West is a club that welcmes new ideas and encurages members t prgress initiatives that supprt the club. Cntributing t NW is fun & rewarding Arund events, ur vlunteer-needs cntinue t be met in true Nrth West style; ur peple just get stuff dne. Sme f it is highly rganised; sme rganic. But the wrk gets dne with smiles and n drama. We haven t asked members hw they feel abut helping ut, but we always seem t have many willing peple, s anecdtally, it must be fun & rewarding t d it. Areas f need include exec cmmittee, setters and cntrllers, website/scial media Membership trends Membership numbers have grwn strngly this year frm 208 t 243. The number f returning members is still trending up, and the percentage f returning memberships is stable ver 80% which is very pleasing. Returning members data is a prxy-indicatr f club culture and value-t-members. We dn t knw fr certain why the numbers are trending up. Exec may chse t explre this questin further as we seek t ffer value t ur members, especially new members learning the sprt Members Returning Members New Members in

We are trying t increase ur fcus n develpment fr ur members with new initiatives fr adult beginners and a junir training grup led by the Mre family. We want a perfrmance culture where everyne wh wants t imprve will be supprted t d s. Final wrds I will be stepping dwn frm the President s rle at the 2017 AGM. I have made this decisin in rder t spend mre quality time with my yung family. We will still be a part f the Nrth West cmmunity and I m lking frward t bringing my family t events mre ften. It has been a great pleasure t serve n the exec cmmittee and in the President s rle fr Nrth West. I want t ffer a special thank my fellw exec members fr the excellent wrking relatinship we ve maintained ver many years. We may nt have the perspective t realise just hw remarkable ur culture is, but rest assured Nrth West Orienteering Club is an exceptinal little rganisatin.
