1 SAIRAC The Suth African Institute f Refrigeratin and Air Cnditining FOUNDING On 17 July 1951, the Suth African Institute f Refrigeratin was funded at a meeting f refrigeratin engineers and fd scientists held at the Brdeaux Htel in Cape Twn. The funding membership f 41 elected Dr Guid Dresti as the Institute s first President, an ffice that he held fr the next 5 years and again in 1957 and in In 1962, the Institute widened its scpe t include air cnditining and became the Suth African Institute f refrigeratin and Air Cnditining (SAIRAC). In 1961 SAIRAC started establishing Centres in the ther majr cities f Suth Africa. OBJECTIVES: ENRICHMENT COURSES SAIRAC ffers enrichment curses related t envirnmental cntrl. Enrichment curses are usually presented as ne day seminars, r a series f evening lectures. Curses are presented by members wh have in-depth knwledge and experience in the subject presented. SAIRAC enrichment curses d nt cmpete with curses ffered by training service prviders r educatinal institutins OBJECTIVES: DATA MANUAL IN CD FORMAT The data manual has been written in the frm f a disk-based website that starts with a dynamic index. This makes it very easy t find infrmatin n any tpic just by clicking n the ht links. We have develped the cntent frm the basics much like a text bk, the bject is nt t teach refrigeratin and air cnditining. Rather, it is t prvide a rich surce f reference material. Sme f the infrmatin is better handled by sftware and where apprpriate, we have included a number f sftware prgrams. Sme f these are: a psychrmetric chart generatr, refrigerant prperties, heat transfer cefficient calculatr and a wrld lcatins database. The cntents cver a brad range f subjects highly relevant t HVAC & R. These exhibitins and cnferences/wrkshps shwcase fr the latest technlgical develpments and trends related t the Envirnmental Cntrl Industry. The last FRIGAIR Exhibitin and Wrkshp was held at Gallager Estate, Jhannesburg, during July The next FRIGAIR Exhibitin and Wrkshp will be held at NASREC, Jhannesburg, during September OBJECTIVES: AWARDS Gld Medal Award The SAIRAC Gld Medal hnurs thse that make utstanding cntributins twards research and develpment in the refrigeratin and air cnditining industry, bth natinally and internatinally. Meritrius Award Awarded t any persn within the air cnditining r refrigeratin industries whm Cuncil wishes t hnur fr utstanding service t the industry. OBJECTIVES: EDUCATIONAL PRIZES In keeping with the bjective t prmte educatin and the disseminatin f knwledge in the industry, SAIRAC ffers the fllwing prizes and student grants: Dresti Prize Awarded n a natinal basis t the authr f the Best Paper presented at a SAIRAC Meeting during any calendar year and published in the SAIRAC jurnal. Centre Prize Awarded by each Centre fr the Best Paper f the year presented at that Centre. The recipient des nt have t be a member f SAIRAC. Mst Diligent PE Centre Member Prize SAIRAC Prize Awarded n a natinal basis t the authr f best thesis presented by a final year student studying refrigeratin and air cnditining subjects at any university in Suth Africa.

5 Best University Student Award Awarded annually t the best final year student in subjects related t air cnditining and refrigeratin. Best Student Award Awarded annually t the best student studying air cnditining r refrigeratin at a University f Technlgy r Technical Cllege. Best Learner Award Awarded annually by each Centre t the t the best learner in NQF level 2 and NQF level 3, studying air cnditining and refrigeratin. PUBLICATION SAIRAC uses the RACA Jurnal as its muthpiece. FUTURE ACTIVITIES The next FRIGAIR Exhibitin and Wrkshp will take place during September The next DREOSTI MEMORIAL LECTURE will be presented in Technical meetings take place n a mnthly basis in each f the Centres. Enrichment curses take place n an nging basis in all the Centres. Awards and educatinal prizes are presented n an nging basis. STRUCTURES SAIRAC is active in the fllwing gegraphic Centres: Cape Twn Durban East Lndn Jhannesburg Prt Elizabeth The affairs f SAIRAC in each centre are managed by an elected cmmittee, cnsisting f the Chairman, Vice Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer and representatives f each grade f membership. Natinal cntrl and management f SAIRAC is vested in a Cuncil, headed by the President, wh is elected by the Members. Cuncil members include the Chairman f each centre, a Vice-President, immediate Past President and Treasurer. Secretarial duties are perfrmed by part-time secretaries and a natinal secretary.
