COMMUNITY NEWS An elderly gentleman had serious hearing problems for a number of years. He went to the doctor who was able to fit for a set of hearing aids that allowed the gentleman to hear 100%.

3 SHREE ROTARY SHRIJANA PRIMARY SCHOOL NEPAL We were fortunate to visit the inauguration of the extension of the Shree Rotary Shrijana Primary School, Nepal. Our club has contributed $7,000 towards the two extra classrooms. In the words of the Rotary Club of Hetauda: "The primary school is located in a very poor suburb of Hetauda. This area is mainly occupied by victims of the Maoist uprising, people who have suffered badly but are trying to give their children an opportunity" The school has been extended by two classrooms, an office and a storeroom, which allows the school to expand classes from year 4 to year 6. We were greeted at the school by an avenue of students, teachers and parents who gave us scarves and flowers. We viewed the school extension, including a 30,000 litre underground water tank. We then took our seats for the official opening. Irene Gray, the educator amongst us, was given the privilege of speaking to the assembly and unveiling the dedicatory plaque. International Service Director Lesley Dare FROM PRESIDENT ISABELLE It's been a hectic week of Rotary and community activities. A brief summary of the weeks activities are:- Wednesday evening a group from our club met many other Rotarians at the Princess Theatre, after a meal at O'Keefe s Picture from The Examiner Hotel, to enjoy Phantom of the Opera. It was a fantastic performance and left us in awe of the amazing talent we have in our community. Thursday evening the host families from our club met the Nova Scotia contingent in Deloraine for a three night stay in our area. There was a big day planned for Friday, including a lunch at the Raspberry Farm. Friday evening we enjoyed the International Night at Latrobe, which was preceded by drinks and nibbles at the Mayor of Latrobe, Michael Gaffney's home. The Advocate was there for a story and a photo so keep your eyes peeled for that article. It was an interesting evening with a Canadian themed meal and interesting speakers from members of the team from Nova Scotia and feedback from the recent Nepal "Gift of Sight" trip from Kevin Shadbolt. There were plenty of bargains to be had at the auction. Good to see the support from our club members at this event. Swapping Banners M i k e M c L o u g h l i n (President Rotary Cub of Latrobe) and President Elect Trinda Ernst (Rotary Club of New Minas Sunrise Nova Scotia) Saturday was a relaxed day where our visitors and hosts were able to enjoy Stringfest and the many other attractions of Deloraine. There were a few of our club members who volunteered and participated in Stringfest over the weekend. The town was certainly buzzing and it certainly added to our visitors experience. Thanks to Kevin and Ann Shadbolt for hosting a farewell dinner at their lovely new home at Shearwater on Saturday night. It was a fitting way to end the time the Nova Scotia team had in Tasmania. I was fortunate that I didn't host the members who had a 6.30am flight home on Sunday!!! A big thank you to PP Lesley for organising us for Phantom of the Opera and the big effort in organising the Friendship Exchange with Nova Scotia and to AG John for his excellent bus driving and PR skills from the moment he picked up the group last Tuesday from Strahan. They all enjoyed their time here and they all remarked on as much as they enjoyed our magnificent food and scenery they will remember the warm hospitality and friendship the most. FREE TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT TRAINING Council is providing training to members of local service and community groups who want to be able to run their own events in the road reserve. This Traffic Management training allows volunteers to control traffic and has been successfully completed by groups who run events such as fun runs, parades, AGFEST, and the Tasmanian Craft Fair. Without this training, events will have to buy in specialist contractors costing up to $1,000 Council are willing to follow up this training with assistance in terms of signage and development of traffic plans. Places are limited to 20. Please let me know ASAP if any of your volunteers are interested. Here are the course details: Implement Traffic Management Plan Control Traffic with a Stop / Slow Bat Quercus Park, Carrick Saturday 12 th April, 2014 TCF NEWS pm FREE (normally $115 per person) Lunch provided Patrick Gambles Community Development Officer Meander Valley Council T: M: E: patrick.gambles@mvc.tas.gov.au DISTRICT NEWS NOMINATIONS FOR 2016/17 DISTRICT GOVERNOR NOMINATING COMMITTEE Nominations are now being sought for the District Nominating Committee for the purpose of selecting the nominee for District Governor 2016/17 and Council on Legislation Representative. The Nominating Committee will consist of IPDG James Wilcox, DG Bruce Buxton, DGN Ken Moore, plus a Past President from each of the three regions denoted by the telephone prefixes 62, 63 and 64. Should there be more than one nomination of a Past President from any region a ballot of clubs within the region will take place. This nominating Committee will meet at Perth on Saturday 10 th May, 2014 to select the nominee for District Governor 2016/17 and a District representative and alternative representative for the 2016 Council of Legislation. Any nominations for these positions should be forwarded to either President Isabelle or Secretary Roy, by 1 st April, NOMINATIONS FOR DISTRICT GOVERNOR 2016/17 Clubs are asked to forward their nominations for the position of District Governor for 2016/17. The nomination for the position must be in the form of a resolution adopted at a regular meeting of the Club and certified by the Club Secretary. A Club may nominate only one of its own members as a candidate for governor-nominee. Selection will take place at Perth on Saturday, 10 th May, 2014 by the nominating committee that will be selected concurrent to this process. Candidates are encouraged to fill out a nomination form and to provide a supporting statement of no more that two pages. Initially applications should be forwarded to either President Isabelle or Secretary Roy. Completed applications then need to be forwarded onto District Governor Bruce, which close at midnight on Wednesday, 30 th April, Are there any Rotarians (or TCF helpers) who would be willing to do this traffic management training, thus enabling us to have better traffic management for the TCF??

5 DISTRICT NEWS LAST MEETING LESS THAN THREE WEEKS TO GO TO DISTRICT CONFERENCE At our last meeting (11th March) we celebrated our Club Birthday (57 years). Our thanks are extended to Lyn Sheehan for providing blue and gold balloons for the tables and also cheese and fruit platters, also for organising our birthday cake which was our dessert for the evening. As one of our longer serving Rotarians, PP Michael Bennett proposed a toast to the Club and cut the birthday cake. A number of Rotarians gave memories of their time in Rotary, the experiences and friendships gained and also encouraged all to take on a directorship or presidency. Register now to avoid disappointment. And don't forget half price registration for new members and their partners - new members will not get a better opportunity to attend a District Conference at this price. For online details and registration go to: Thanks to all those who attended Phantom of the Opera in Launceston on Wednesday night and as a result of the profit made, up to 5,000 children will now be immunised against polio. Great night's entertainment and even greater result for the recipients of the vaccine. Huge big thank you to PDG Lou Johnson for organising this and selling 200 tickets to Rotarians, their family members and friends. Great International Night on Friday hosted by the Rotary Club of Latrobe where the visiting Friendship Exchange team members from District 7820 Canada were special guests. Presentations on Nepal by PDG Kevin Shadbolt and life as a Royal Canadian Mounted Policeman by ex Mountie Donald Gray were highlights of the night. Also I had the pleasure of accepting from IPDG James Wilcox a magnificently framed letter of appreciation from District 3292 Nepal for the association between our two Districts. Our District along with the Canadian District are combining to implement a clean drinking water project to a village in Nepal and the International Night celebrated the association between the three Districts. FRIENDSHIP EXCHANGE TO SWEDEN Rotary District 2390 covers the cities of Helsingborg, Lund, Malmo and Trelleborg and have invited our District to participate in a home hosting friendship exchange. Looking at visiting the last week of April and first week of May 2015, and numbers will be limited to 12. Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA) PP Annette is co-ordinating this project, and is currently receiving applications from schools. Rotarians assistance will be required over the weekend, to help during the Assembly and also with billeting students. Please note that Rotarians, partners and other adults in the household, will need to have completed a National Police Check to be able to billet. Copies of this form are available from Secretary Roy. With MUNA being held on the 17 th & 18 th May, there is not much time for these checks to be completed. If you need to complete a form, please attend to this ASAP!!! VOCATIONAL SERVICE Do you know of a local business that should be recognised. Great Western Tiers Cycle Challenge The annual Great Western Tiers Cycle Challenge, to aid the New Horizons Club will be held on Sunday 30 th March. A reminder to all Rotarians who have offered to assist with this event. If you are unsure of what is required of you, or where and when you need to be, please liaise with Community Service Director Mike. Required... Water jugs are required for Sunday can you assist in providing one (or more)??? MEETING OF 22 ND APRIL Rotarians please note that our meeting of Tuesday 22 nd April, will be held at the Deloraine Senior Citizens Club (33A Parsonage Street). Meeting time will be the usual (6.15 for 6.30p.m.) and the usual cost ($21.00). The Senior Citizens Committee will provide a 2 course meal. This is an opportunity for us to see the facility and to learn of the activities provided for the wider community. The Club is currently raising funds to purchase 2 new Indoor Bowling Mats and a set of coloured bowls. As this meeting falls immediately after Easter, if would be much appreciated if you could please advise of your apology (or if you are bringing guests) at our meeting on the 15 th April.
