GILES WALK WITH ME SATURDAY 17 TH, SEPTEMBER Walk with Me is an event planned by Ability First Australia and its affiliate members, to raise awareness of people living with disabilities in our community. The aim of Walk with Me is to raise funds for respite care for people living with disabilities. All money raised in Tasmania goes to St. Giles. PP Lesley will advise those taking part of the venue that they will need to be at on the designated day!! POT LUCK Saturday night at the Dare s home, saw a number of Rotarians and partners gather for a Pot Luck meal. It is believed that this was a good night perhaps next week we may have a report and photographs to show you what you missed out on!! Queensland Flood Appeal Last week, PDG Ted Richey signed a Memorandum of Understanding between Rotary Tasmania and representatives from the Rotary Club of Towoomba East and Lockyer Valley Regional Council. This is the money raised ($900,000) in Tasmania for the Queensland Flood Appeal. It will be used to build a community centre in Murphys Creek. This will be a partners night. News from Treasurer Good news for Rotarians!! Last week Treasurer Bev distributed Invoices for subs. Subs for this Rotary year have been set at $ If you were absent, don t worry your Invoice is on its way!! Rotarians can pay their subs in one lump sum, or they can pay half year (ie now and in January). If you wish to pay your subs electronically, Bank details are included on your invoice please remember to include you name!! VOCATIONAL SERVICE Group Study Exchange (GSE) Rotarians are advised that there will be 1 GSE Team going out this Rotary Year (approx April 2012) to Ontario/Canada. It is expected that selection for Team Leader and Team Members will be held in October. If you would like to know more information about GSE, then speak to Vocational Service Director PP Peter Griffin. COMMUNITY SERVICE Director PP Paul advised at last weeks meeting that the B o a r d h a d d i s c u s s e d contributing funds to Inner Wheel, to assist with the upgrading of the Mezzanine Floor at the Community Complex. This will enable IW to use the area during the Craft Fair for refreshments for Rotarians, guests, judges, etc. The Board has agreed to assist with funding, on the condition that the Meander Valley Council also contribute to this project. It doesn't matter whether you win or lose--until you lose.

4 ROTARY INFORMATION PAUL P HARRIS CHILDHOOD Paul P. Harris was born to George and Cornelia Harris on 19 April, 1868 in Racine, Wisconsin, USA. George endeavored to support his family as a smallbusinesses owner, but he often relied on his father for financial assistance -- so much so that in July 1871, Harris and his older brother, Cecil, were sent to live with their paternal grandparents in Wallingford, Vermont. Harris later wrote, Of all charges which might have been made against George and Cornelia, parsimony would have stood the least chance. They were both royal spenders. Harris was raised by his grandparents, seeing his parents only on the few occasions when they attempted to reunite the family. The lawyer asks if she would like to play a fun game? The tired blonde just wants to take a nap, politely declines and rolls over to the window to catch a few winks. The lawyer persists and explains that the game is easy and a lot of fun. He explains, "I ask you a question, and if you don't know the answer, you pay me $5, and vise versa." Again, she declines and tries to get some sleep. The lawyer, now agitated, says, "Okay, if you don't know the answer you pay me $5, and if I don't know the answer, I will pay you $500." This catches the blonde's attention and, figuring there will be no end to this torment unless she plays, agrees to the game. The lawyer asks the first question. "What's the distance from the earth to the moon?" The blonde doesn't say a word, reaches into her purse, pulls out a $5 bill and hands it to the lawyer. "Okay," says the lawyer, "your turn." She asks the lawyer, "What goes up a hill with three legs and comes down with four legs?" The lawyer, puzzled, takes out his laptop computer and searches all his references, no answer. He hops on the Internet and searches Google and the Library of Congress. No answer. Frustrated, he sends s to all his friends and coworkers, to no avail. After an hour, he wakes the blonde, and hands her $500. The blonde says, "Thank you," and turns back to get some more sleep. The lawyer, who is more than a little miffed, wakes the blonde and asks, "Well, what's the answer?" Without a word, the blonde reaches into her purse, hands the lawyer $5, and goes back to sleep.

5 YELLOW BOAT ROAD Rotarians should be aware that, Microsoft Founder, Bill Gates and his wife Melinda, through their Foundation, have pledged $355 million toward the eradication of polio if Rotary can raise $200 million by June 30 th, Rotary has raised $161 million but needs to raise another $39 million to fulfil its share of the agreement, then the world shall be free at last of polio. Tasmanian Rotarian Rob Pennicott and his fellow skipper Mick Souter are currently circumnavigating Australia in his 2x5.4m Naiad ribs (18ft dinghies) The Yellow Boats - to raise awareness to the eradication of polio and raise much needed funds along the way. They are expected to arrive in Hobart waters towards the end of August. Local Rotary Clubs and Rob s staff at Pennicott Wilderness Journeys intend to assemble a flotilla of yachts and boats to greet Rob off Bruny Island and other points along the Derwent River to escort him to Constitution Dock where the Official Welcome to Hobart shall be held. Rob has been thrilled by the response of Rotary Clubs and the general public at each port of call thus far and has already raised in excess of $126,000 for this great cause. The intention of this letter is to request each Rotary Club to SPREAD THE WORD amongst all Rotarians, families and friends who own boats that they may be part of the Official Welcoming Flotilla by purchasing a Registration Pack which amongst other items will contain the Official Follow The Yellow Boat Road pennant to attach to their boats. The pack is available at a cost of $50 by contacting Ray Ware on or ray.ware@bigpond.com All profits from the sale of the Registration Packs will go to the cause. We will keep Rotary Clubs posted on Rob s progress (which of course is subject to weather conditions) and advise as soon as we have a definite arrival date, assembly points will also be advised prior to his arrival. WILDWOOD Community Action Grant On behalf of the Club and the Wildwood sub-committee, an application for a grant for the Wildwood was submitted. This had to be finished by July 31 st for the closing day 1 st August, The process was started by PP Tim and finished with a lot of help from Stuart Brownlie of Meander Valley Council (and a Westbury Rotarian). The hope is for a grant of $14,000 to pay for an excavator to clear a large are of dead and rotting willows, with subsequent planting of appropriate plants. Also to clear some of the willows along the river bank to stabilize it. The grant people are interested in WONS (Weeds Of National Significance), that is willows and gorse. Also keen on helping endangered species quolls and barn owls. The fact that the Club has a record of achievement extending over 50 years, will help our application. If successful, we are expected to organise some working bees, hopefully with some of the other groups that use the area. Looking back, it was this Rotary Club that initiated the clearing of the river bank, which is now such an attractive feature of the town. We were assisted by Apex, Lions and other interested groups and this was followed up by the Council. Also the Rotary Park area with support from Inner Wheel. Marc Smith Wildwood A young executive was leaving the office late one evening when he found the CEO standing in front of a shredder with a piece of paper in his hand. "Listen," said the CEO, "this is a very sensitive and important document here, and my secretary has gone for the night. Can you make this thing work?" "Certainly," said the young executive. He turned the machine on, inserted the paper, and pressed the start button. "Excellent, excellent!" said the CEO as his paper disappeared inside the machine. "I just need one copy."
