2 Paul Harris Fellowship. The Rotary Foundation is the only official charity of Rotary International. It has been established to accept donations from both Rotarians & non Rotarians around the world. Rotary Foundation could simply be described as an International Fund Manager owned & controlled by Rotary. The mission statement of the Rotary Foundation is to enable Rotarians to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through improvement of health, the support of education, and the alleviation of poverty People making a contribution of $1000US are entitled to receive a Paul Harris Fellowship. In our Rotary club, like many other clubs, where a significant donation to the Foundation has been made, the club may take the opportunity to bestow a Paul Harris Fellowship, to a citizen who has made an extraordinary contribution to the community through their vocation, community organisations and charities. People who have clearly shown Service above Self The Rotary Club of Deloraine has bestowed a Paul Harris Fellowship to one of our members (more information further down) Launceston Friends of Clifford Craig Cocktail Party and Art Exhibition Friday 14th May, 2010 Where: Clifford Craig Medical Research Trust WD Booth Centre, Level 5, LGH Time: p.m. Cost: Single $15.00 Double $25.00 RSVP to Vicki Beresford by 10th May Viewing of the art will be from 17th - 21st May, 2010 at the same location, 10.00a.m p.m. Monday to Friday. RYPEN is tremendous for our young adults (14 to 18 yrs) as they prepare for their future. RYPEN sets out to broaden horizons and lift aspirations in a supervised residential weekend seminar. It's aim is to communicate to young people a series of ideas, problems and social experiences which will assist them in forming their own values and moral standards and broaden their horizons culturally, socially and academically. (Nominations are encouraged through Rotary clubs approaching local high schools. They are directed to the district RYPEN chairman for selection and advice. The cost for the weekend is usually carried by the sponsoring Rotary club.) New Generations Director Annette Viney would like suggestions of names to attend RYPEN as soon as possible Centrelink The Mobile Servicing Unit will be in the Woolworths car park on Monday and Tuesday 3rd and 4th May (9.30am pm) This unit will be able to provide information and assistance on a broad range of Australian Government payments and services. While the primary focus is to raise awareness of drought assistance for farmers and agriculture-related small businesses, they have recently expanded their services to rural communities to include a broader range of payments and services for families, students and seniors. They would encourage farmers, irrigators, small businesses and the general public to visit them when they are in town, to see how they may be able to help you. Little Susie: "I don't want to eat this squash." Mommy: "But it's good for you, darling." Little Susie: "But I don't LIKE it!" Mommy: "You like pretending. Why don't you pretend it's ice cream?" Little Susie: "Why can't I just pretend it's gone?"

3 Our newest Paul Harris Fellow Rotarian John Christie, Deloraine John Christie Accountant Bachelor of Education Member of the College of Education Member of the College for Children with Learning difficulties John Christie, together with his mother and brother, came to Australia as immigrants and arrived on the 8th January, His father had arrived 6 months earlier and was employed at BHP Wollongong. It is interesting to note that 15 years later John and Marilyn were married (8th January,1966 the same date as his arrival)!! John moved to his host family in Russell Vale, where Marilyn was brought up. He attended Corrimale Public School. Here, the boys campus was on one side of the property, and the girls campus on the other side (it even had separate playing areas). Again it is interesting to note that during this time, John walked past Marilyn s house each day, they both attended the same school -- but they did not know each other at this stage. John then moved to Gwynneville Public School for the next 4 years (3-6) - he was Dux of the School. He then went on to Wollongong High - selective school where he was amongst the top 2% of students. He left in 1959 having gained his HSC. John started his professional life as an Accountant, and later moved to his passion of Education. In that November 1959, he started work as a Trainee Accountant at Hills Bus Service, and studied part time. As Wollongong did not have a University, John wasn t able to continue his studies in Education. From December March 1965 John worked in the office at Waters a general hardware store John moved to Sydney and travelled daily by train to work at Coogee Preparatory Boys College, living on a meagre salary and his savings - he wanted to get into education (when their son Jamie was 2), John continued his studies and gained Distinctions for his Bachelor and Masters Studies in Education. At this stage he was at Trinity Grammar Preparatory School as Master in charge of professional development John was appointed Assistant Principal at The Friends School in Hobart.. He held this position for 9 years In John was seconded to the Committee of Professional Development Office for non Government Schools in Tasmania John was appointed to the position of Principal at Cathedral School of St. Anne and St. James Townsville and held this position for 9 years John and family moved to Gib Gate School in Mittagong where he remained Principal for 5 years John and Marilyn moved to Deloraine where he began as Principal of Giant Steps School for autistic children. John has used the The Friends School philosophy of "good in all men" throughout his life. Education has always been John's passion. John came to Deloraine when he was appointed Principal of Giant Steps Tasmania at a period when the school was under threat of closure.

4 The school was surviving on ad hoc funding from the Government, along with substantial funding from Rotary Club of Deloraine, other Deloraine service organisations and in house fund raising. The location was ideal, being half way between Devonport & Launceston. But, things were not looking good for the future. It became apparent early, that a bus would be a great asset to Giant Steps, for day trips and to assist some of the students with transport. John has driven the bus to and from Launceston for 8 years in order to keep the expenses of drivers to a minimum. The school now has 3 buses; 2 travelling from Launceston and 1 from Devonport each day, relieving much of the load from parents and thus allowing some parents to continue working. John s background experience has enabled him to speak with confidence and authority to service clubs and other organisations about Giant Steps, and he has been very successful in gaining funds to assist in the development and expansion of the school. John played a major role in the development of the sponsor a child programme and the baby quest fund raising which was run for a number of years John has spoken many times at a formal level to State and Federal Governments and has been involved with committees to source funding. His success at this level has not only been instrumental in saving Giant Steps, but also progressing it to a more reliable and secure base, to affirm its future. John s ability to ensure lengthy submissions were completed professionally has seen the school rewarded with funding. At the ground level John has shown unlimited compassion towards both the parents and the students. Respect and enthusiasm are contagious and reflect on leadership. John has been able to restore both through difficult times amongst students, staff, friends and the managing body and most importantly amongst parents who regularly are at their wits end managing their children day in day out. Through his association with Giant steps and Rotary John has become involved with another school for autistic children in the Philippines. John and Marilyn, along with other members from our Club originally went to the Philippines as members of a Rotary Friendship Exchange from our District 9830 to District It was during this visit that members became aware of the recently established school for autistic children under the guidance of the Rotary Club of Calamba. Upon return John was asked by the Rotary Club of Deloraine to return to the Philippines using a Carl P Miller Discovery Grant. (This is a Rotary International funded programme to assist in investigatory procedures in a foreign country, before money is allocated to a project.) John and Marilyn were asked by the Rotary Club of Deloraine to undertake an investigatory role in assessing the recently established Intervention School of Hope promoted by the Rotary Club of Calamba. The plan was to ascertain if this was an institution that was addressing the role of teaching autistic students in a satisfactory and efficient manner. To investigate the standard of teachers and teaching methodologies, the current conditions of the school, its future goals and needs, and the aspirations of the Rotary Club for this project. John reported enthusiastically to the Rotary Club of Deloraine which accepted the proposed association between our two Clubs. John identified and prioritised the things which were really needed by the new school. Both Rotary Clubs have provided substantial funding to put up new buildings and infrastructure. A most rewarding project As a side result of this association with Rotary Club of Calamba --- now Deloraine s sister club John was also able to arrange for staff from Hope Intervention, to travel to Deloraine to work at Giant Steps and board at Launceston Church Grammar School for 2 year stints. Thus giving specialized teachers an opportunity to widen their experience, expand their expertise and share their knowledge with other staff members. This cross fertilization, has advanced the

5 procedures used to help children, and has been of great benefit to both schools. Deloraine Rotarians have met those visitors and made them welcome in our society. In fact John and Marilyn will return to the Philippines this September to be sponsors at the wedding of one of the visiting teachers. Whilst in the Philippines, John and Marilyn have been hosted by PDG Kit Reventar, who was a member of the Rotary Friendship Exchange to Tasmania, whom many of us will undoubtedly remember. Kit has a strong affiliation with a small country village and school near the city of Daet in the far southern part of Luzon. This isolated school has very little infra structure, including essential services. John has helped promote this school and has given valuable assistance to Kit in obtaining Matching Grants to help develop the school and to provide reasonable learning conditions for the students as well as to provided essential school items such as books for a small library; water supply and reticulation. This has been another very rewarding project for our Club to support. John Christie joined the Rotary Club of Deloraine in 2000 and was sponsored by PP Marc Smith. It wasn t long before John was taking on roles within the Club. He was Club Secretary in and and has participated on selection committees to select students for the Vocational Tertiary Scholarship, Youth Siemens Science Forum, Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, and the Rotary Youth Programme of Enrichment. In 2006 Rotarian John became understudy for the Tasmanian Craft Fair Directorship and in 2007 & 2008 he held the position of Tasmanian Craft Fair Director. This is a particularly demanding task, taking up considerable time and effort. John displayed the same management skills and foresight by introducing refreshing programmes while maintaining the integrity of the Fair. Managing the many volunteers, and artisans, along with the huge marketing programme was a credit to him. Both fairs returned a handsome profit and the Rotary charities were the beneficiaries. As all Rotarians would realise to make a success of any business or profession, one is constantly thinking from dawn to dusk, about how to achieve a successful outcome. Setting goals, assessing criteria, searching for improvements, building goodwill, building confidence, security and so on. We know John is one of these people Well done and congratulations. The little girl was fascinated by the story, especially the part where the pumpkin turns into a golden coach. Suddenly she piped up, "Daddy, when the pumpkin turned into a golden coach, would that be classed as income or a long- term capital gain?"

A combined service Clubs Golf Day is to be held at Deloraine on Sunday 11 th April starting at 1:00pm. This will include members of Rotary, Lions, Apex and Inner Wheel. Cost is $15 and will include a Barbecue at the 10 th Hole. Memo from PP John Lord reads: The suggestion by President Elect to drop the use of the few acronyms we use in Rotary is typical of the Young Turks wanting change. I believe that their continued use is a protocol that adds esteem to our meetings. Those who wish to dispense with them can do so as they did with tie wearing. I will keep using them as I hope the Bulletin Editor and others will, but I will not recognize a charge leveled against me without the words Past President preceding the charge Editor s comment I intend to continue to use a proper form of address, but as there are so many in our Club I will inadvertently miss some from time to time. I trust that I don t offend anyone. School of St. Jude Meet Gemma Sisia at:- Fri 23/4/10 Latrobe Rotary Club, Axeman s Hall of Fame Club, Latrobe, Dinner $20. After nearly six months, she awakens and sees that she is no longer pregnant. Frantically, she asks the doctor about her baby. The doctor replies, " Ma'am, you had twins - a boy and a girl. The babies are fine. Your brother came in and named them." The woman thinks to herself, "Oh, no! Not Mike; he's an idiot!" Expecting the worst, she asks the doctor, "Well, what's the girl's name?" "Denise," the doctor answers. The new mother thinks, "Wow! That's a beautiful name; maybe I was wrong about my brother. I really like the name Denise. "What's the boy's name?" The doctor replies, "Denephew." A woman in my office who had recently divorced after years of marriage, signed up for a refresher CPR course. "Is it hard to learn?" someone asked. "Not at all," my co-worker replied. "Basically you're asked to breathe life into a dummy. I don't expect to have any problem. I did that for 12 years."

The repairs are starting to look very smart! A blonde is taking the driving portion of her driver's license exam. She handles most of the maneuvers quite well. She has a little trouble parallel parking, however, and winds up a couple of feet from the curb. "Could you get a little closer?" the examiner asks. The blonde then unbuckles her seat belt and slides over toward the examiner." A blonde heard that milk baths would make her beautiful. She left a note for her milkman to leave 200 litres of milk. When the milkman read the note, he felt there must be a mistake. He thought she probably meant 2 litres. So he knocked on the door to clarify the point. The blonde came to the door and the milkman said, "I found your note asking me to leave 200 litres of milk. Did you mean 2 litres?" The blonde said, "I want 200 litres. I'm going to fill my bathtub up with milk and take a milk bath so I can look young and beautiful again. The milkman asked, "Do you want it pasteurized?" The blonde said, "No, just up to my armpits will be fine." I recently saw a distraught young lady weeping beside her car 'Do you need some help?' I asked. She replied, 'I knew I should have replaced the battery in this remote. Now I can't get into my car. Do you think they (pointing to a distant convenience store) would have a battery to fit this?' 'Hmmm, I dunno. Do you have an alarm, too?' I asked. 'No, just this remote thingy,' she answered, handing it and the car keys to me. As I took the key and manually unlocked the door, I replied, 'Why don't you drive over there and check about the batteries. It's a long walk.
