1 Job Description for Camp Administrators and Staff Position Title: Executive Camp Director The Executive Camp Director plans, coordinates, and oversees the overall camp program, approves all camp activities, and hires camp staff. He/she is responsible for communicating with parents, guardians, teachers, and counselors and other camp staff prior, during, and after the summer camp. Must be at least 25 years of age and have experience in planning major events. Ability to work collaboratively with others. Possesses good leadership abilities, management and organizational skills. Be knowledgeable of and adheres to all camp policies, rules, and guidelines. Establishes operating budget for the camp and controls expenditures. Collaborates with appropriate University staff on classrooms, meeting facilities, recreational facilities, housing needs, and other university facilities that are needed for the camp. Collaborates with the Camp Program Director on the scheduling of classroom, field, and evening activities. Oversees the development of the camp program and approve all camp activities. Hires, disciplines, supervises and terminates camp staff. Conducts Risk Management training and background checks. Organizes and coordinates the campers selection process. Produces forms, letters and pertinent documents needed for the implementation of the camp. Handles questions, problems and concerns of parents/guardians before and during camp. Observes the peer culture to see if there are any problems and implement solutions as necessary. Establishes a procedure for handling all difficulties related to health, behavior and other problems and report incidents to the Harris Foundation. Monitors and ensures appropriate student behavior and adherence to camp rules and regulations. Schedules small group meetings with staff as needed. Works closely, cooperatively and amicably with all staff members. Handles emergency situations in conjunction with Camp Program Director, Lead Dorm Counselor and Lead Camp Counselor. Assesses the overall program to see if there are any changes that need to be made for optimum functioning. Completes and/or oversees the completion of all documents (agreement, schedules, program evaluation, information management system, etc.) required by the Harris Foundation. Seeks advice and/or assistance from the National Camp Director when needed. 1

He/she is responsible for communicating with instructors, guest speakers, and others contributors to the camp instructional program. He/she has the ability to work with others with minimal supervision. Background Required and Qualification Must be at least 25 years of age and have experience in planning multifaceted programs. Ability to work collaboratively with others. Possesses good leadership abilities, management, and organizational skills. Be knowledgeable of and adheres to all camp policies, rules and guidelines. Works collaboratively with the Executive Camp Director on camp activities. Works closely, cooperatively and amicably with all staff members. Works collaboratively with camp instructors and other staff on class schedule, instructional activities, field sites and other camp activities. Assists with the selection of campers. Coordinates parent volunteer activities. Collaborates with the Executive Camp Director on the scheduling of classroom, field, and evening activities. Observes the peer culture to identify problems, make recommendations and implements solutions as necessary. Oversees the daily schedule and makes changes when necessary. Reports all difficulties related to health, behavior and other problems immediately to the Executive Camp Director and the Registered Nurse on duty. Monitors and ensures appropriate student behavior and adherence to camp rules and regulations. Facilitates small group meetings (group and team planning sessions, etc.) as needed. Notifies the Executive Camp Director if he/she must be absent or late for duty for any reason. Assists the Executive Camp Director in the completion of all paperwork and the supervision of staff in the completion of their responsibilities. Handles emergency situations in conjunction with the Executive Camp Director. Assists the Executive Camp Director in assessing the overall program to identify any changes that need to be made for optimum functioning. Seeks advice from the Executive Camp Director when needed. 2
3 Position Title: Junior Camp Counselor Reports to: All Camp Counselors and Camp Directors A Junior Camp Counselor supports camp instructors and Senior (Day) Camp Counselors in facilitating camp activities and supervising campers. He/she is responsible for knowing the whereabouts of each camper in his/her charge at all times during duty hours. Must be at least 13 years of age. Demonstrates appropriate behavior at all times. Is patient, enthusiastic, self-controlled and dependable. Has ability to work with others and follow directions. Observes and promotes all rules and regulations established for the EMBHSSC and campers. Assists Senior (Day) Camp and Dorm (Night) Counselors with camp activities. Escorts the campers to mealtime, classes, recreation, and participates in their supervision. Assists campers in the selection and research of topics for projects and during class activities. Attends all camp activities. Conducts morning roll call. Maintains attendance count at all camp activities. Reports a camper s absence from a camp activity immediately to the Lead Camp (Day) Counselor, a Senior (Day) Camp Counselor, a Dorm (Night) Counselor or a Camp Director. Reports any rule violation by campers to the Lead Camp (Day) Counselor, a Senior (Day) Camp Counselor, a Dorm (Nigh) Counselor or a Camp Director. Reports any observed difficulties related to illness and/or injury of campers immediately to the Lead Camp (Day) Counselor, a Senior (Day) Camp Counselor, a Dorm (Nigh) Counselor or a Camp Director. Works cooperatively with fellow Junior Camp Counselors in the completion of assigned duties. Seeks assistance or advice from the Lead Camp (Day) Counselor, a Senior (Day) Camp Counselor, a Dorm (Night) Counselor or a Camp Director when needed. 3
4 Position Title: Senior (Day) Camp Counselor Reports to: Lead Camp (Day) Counselor and Camp Directors A Senior Camp Counselor supports camp instructors, facilitates daytime camp activities and supervises campers. He/she is responsible for knowing the whereabouts of each camper in his/her charge at all times during duty hours. Must be at least 18 years of age and a student at the host university or another local college or university. Has the ability to work with minimal supervision. Demonstrates appropriate behavior at all times. Has the ability to work with others and follow directions. Be knowledgeable of all policies and rules of the EMBHSSC and assist in their enforcement. Observes all rules and regulations established for the EMBHSSC and campers. Supervises campers while in the dining hall and while participating in daytime camp activities. Escorts campers to mealtime, classes, and field and recreation activities, and participates in their supervision. Monitors and ensures appropriate student behavior and adherence to the dress code. Assesses the appropriateness of campers behavior and report behavior and other problems immediately to the Lead Camp (Day) Counselor. Works closely, cooperatively and amicably with all staff members. Notifies the Lead Camp (Day) Counselor and/or a Camp Director if he/she must be absent from or late for duty for any reason. Reports any observed difficulties related to illness and/or injury of campers immediately to the Lead Camp (Day) Counselor or a Camp Director. Reports to work and from scheduled breaks on time. Seeks advice from the Executive Camp Director and/or Camp Program Director when needed. 4

Assigns tasks to, schedules breaks for, and maintains work record of Senior (Day) Camp Counselors and Junior Camp Counselors. Assesses the appropriateness of campers behavior and applies appropriate behavior management techniques. Reports behavior and other problems immediately to the University Camp Director. Accompanies the campers to all daytime camp events. Works closely, cooperatively and amicably with all staff members. Encourages cooperation, teamwork, and participation from Junior and Senior (Day) Camp Counselors. Notifies the Executive Camp Director if he/she must be absent or late for duty for any reason. Reports any observed difficulties related to illness and/or injury of campers immediately to a Camp Director. Reports to work and from scheduled breaks on time. Stays in the dorm with campers and Dorm (Night) Counselors. Seeks advice from the Executive Camp Director when needed. 5

He/she is responsible for knowing the whereabouts of each camper in his/her charge at all times. Must be at least 21 years of age. Has the ability to work with minimal supervision. Demonstrates appropriate behavior at all times. Has the ability to work with others and follow directions. Be knowledgeable of all policies and rules and assist in their enforcement. Observes all rules and regulations established for the EMBHSSC and campers. Monitors and ensures appropriate student behavior and adherence to the dress code. Recognizes and responds to opportunities for problem solving with the campers. Provides opportunities for discussion of individual or group problems or concerns. Supervises campers while in the dining hall for dinner and participating in evening camp activities. Observes campers behavior, assesses its appropriateness, and applies appropriate behavior management techniques. Reports behavior and other problems immediately to the Lead Dorm Counselor. Observe campers daily for illness and/or injuries. Reports all difficulties related to health immediately to the Lead Dorm Counselor and/or the Executive Camp Director. Accompanies the campers to all evening camp events. Works closely, cooperatively and amicably with fellow Dorm Counselors in the completion of assigned duties. Reports to work on time. Notifies the Lead Dorm Counselor and/or the Executive Camp Director if he/she must be absent or late for duty for any reason. Stays in the dorm with the campers. Seeks advice from the Lead Dorm Counselor and the Executive Camp Director when needed. 6

The Lead Dorm (Night) Counselor is responsible for knowing the whereabouts of each camper, Junior Camp Counselor, and Dorm (Night) Counselor at all times during duty hours. Must be at least 25 years of age. Has the ability to work independently and know when to request assistance. Demonstrates appropriate behavior at all times. Has the ability to work with others and follow directions. Be knowledgeable of all policies and rules and assist in their enforcement. Observes all rules and regulations established for the EMBHSSC and campers. Makes room assignments for campers, Junior Camp Counselors and Dorm (Night) Counselors. Recognizes and responds to opportunities for problem solving in the group of campers. Facilitates the supervision of campers while in the dining hall and while participating in evening activities. Assigns tasks to Junior Camp Counselors and Dorm (Night) Counselors. Monitors and ensures appropriate student behavior and adherence to the dress code. Assesses the appropriateness of campers behavior and applies appropriate behavior management techniques. Reports behavior and other problems immediately to the Executive Camp Director. Accompanies the campers to all evening camp events. Works closely, cooperatively and amicably with all staff members. Facilitates small group meetings. Gains cooperation, teamwork, and participation from Junior Camp Counselors and Dorm (Night) Counselors. Notifies the Executive Camp Director if he/she must be absent or late for duty for any reason. Observe campers daily for illness and/or injuries. Reports all difficulties related to health immediately to the Executive Camp Director. Reports to work on time. Seeks advice from the Executive Camp Director when needed. Performs other duties assigned. 7
8 Reports to: Camp Program Director Position Title: Camp Instructor A Camp Instructor provides inquiry-based, product-oriented instruction for the campers that will enhance campers knowledge, understanding and application of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) content/concepts, study skills, thinking skills, problem solving strategies and communication skills. Must be a certified secondary teacher (minimum of five years of teaching) in the content area assigned and/or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Possesses good leadership abilities and communication skills. Has the ability to work with others. Works collaboratively with appropriate camp staff on the content of the instructional program and related activities. Provides a teaching plan or class outline, with handouts, for assigned classes that adhere to the guiding principles of the ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Summer Science Camp. Works closely, cooperatively and amicably with other staff members. Notifies the Camp Program Director if he/she must be absent or late for duty for any reason. Reports problems and seek advice from the Camp Program Director when needed. Reports all difficulties related to health of the campers immediately to a Senior (Day) Camp or Lead Camp Counselor. Stimulates campers interest in individual and group activities. Provides a safe learning environment to motivate youth. 8
9 Reports to: Camp Instructor Position Title: Teacher Assistant/Assistant Instructor A teacher assistant and/or assistant instructor provide direct instructional services to campers under the general supervision of the camp instructor assigned. Must have one of the following credentials in the content area assigned: a teaching certificate (minimum of three years of teaching); equivalent combination of training and experience; a continuing certificate for teaching grades 6-8; or a grad student working on a degree in a STEM field. Possesses good leadership abilities and communication skills. Has the ability to work with others. Works collaboratively with camp instructor on the content of the instructional program and related activities. Notifies the Camp Program Director and Camp Instructor if he/she must be absent or late for duty for any reason. Reports problems and seek advice from the Camp Program Director when needed. Reports all difficulties related to the health of campers immediately to the Camp Instructor. Works with individual campers or groups of campers on special instructional projects. Provides the Camp Instructor with information about campers that will assist him/her in the development of appropriate learning experiences. Assists campers in the use of available instructional resources. Assists in the development of instructional materials. Be able to teach classes as back up instructor in the absence of the camp instructor. Stimulates campers interest in individual and group activities. Provides a safe learning environment to motivate youth. 9
10 Reports to: Camp Directors Position Title: Registered Nurse The Registered Nurse (RN) is the primary health care professional for the camp. The RN supports the Camp staff in providing campers a safe, fun, and educational experience in a supportive environment. Background required and Qualifications Must have a RN license. Must have at least five years job experience working with students. Must be certified in CPR and first aid. Ability to work with others and follow directions. Observes and promotes all rules and regulations established for the EMBHSSC. Clarifies any health-related questions with parents during camp orientation. Attend off-campus (daytime RN) and recreational (evening RN) activities. Observe campers for illness and/or injuries. Report any difficulties related to health immediately to the Executive Camp Director or Camp Program Director. Seeks assistance or advice from the Executive Camp Director and/or Camp Program Director when needed. Meets with the counselors to discuss campers/jccs health concerns as needed. Visits with Executive Camp Director daily or at a time agreed upon to discuss campers/jccs health concerns and medical issues. Responds to medical emergencies and treat as necessary and assesses whether injuries/illnesses require further treatment. Takes injured and ill camper/jcc to the medical facility, if necessary. Provides general first aid care (scrapes, minor cuts and bruises); treatment of colds/headaches, upset stomachs, etc.; and assesses whether further treatment is required. Calls parents to report illness and/or injury. Makes appointments with medical facility for campers and JCCs and accompany him/her to the facility at appointed time. Maintains log of patients seen and treated. Maintains necessary records of medical forms on campers and JCCs. Keeps record of all medications to be dispensed. Dispenses prescription drugs under the written health care procedures, and nonprescription drugs only under the written health care procedures, physician s standing orders, or under the signed instruction of the individual s physician. 10
