APOLOGIES Rotarians are reminded that they are automatically booked in for a meal each week. If you are unable to attend, or are bringing guests, apologies etc. should be advised to: PP Ann Axelsen by noon each Tuesday. Phone or Dear club members 18 th June, 2016 Fodder Relief You may recall a letter from me a few months ago and a presentation I made at the District Conference promoting the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between our Rotary District and the State Government confirming Rotary as the lead agency for acquiring and distributing animal fodder in times of a fire, flood or similar disaster. Unfortunately, such a disaster in the form of a flood struck last week but Rotary has been unable to deliver on the MOU because most clubs have failed to register any interest in this important District project and because there is little if any surplus fodder within the Tasmanian farming community. Consequently, the RABS project to raise cash has been established as highlighted in the recent communications from DG John Dare. Our commitment to fodder relief is however still required because we must be prepared for future events and for the sake of our Rotary brand and image deliver on our promise. I therefore ask clubs to consider committing to this project by nominating a fodder relief member to co-ordinate local collection and distribution of fodder as part of a District response. I don t believe this will be an onerous job as most years (we hope) will require no action other than some thought as to how such a task could be implemented. This project is a great opportunity for both rural and urban clubs to engage to promote individual clubs and Rotary in general and thus an opportunity to increase membership which is always a goal of every club. Urban clubs may not have access to fodder but they can raise cash and have networks that may access transport and other necessary resources. All members of the fodder relief committee are available to visit clubs to explain this important project so please contact me or any of the following members of the Fodder Committee: Lyndon Isles, Longford ( ) Nigel Pedley, Smithton ( ) James Dunbabin, Sorell ( ) Graham Dent, Westbury ( ) Kerry Vincent, Sorell ( ) Robin Thompson, Scottsdale ( ) The recent floods are an example of how disaster can strike almost without warning so as Rotarians lets be prepared to lead and make a difference. I look forward to receiving the name and contact details of the fodder relief co-ordinator appointed by your club. Yours in Rotary Robin Thompson Chairman, Fodder Relief Committee robin.glen@activ8.net.au

3 District Information information From the District Governor: Rotary Tasmania Flood Relief Appeal The RABS project to raise money to resource recovery projects following the Tasmanian floods has been established and is receiving donations. Clubs and their members are urged to make contributions as well as to recommend the appeal to their friends and family members. The plan is to use money raised to support projects recommended by clubs similar to the manner by which District Grants are managed so all the funds will stay in Tasmania to help Tasmanians. Donations are easy to make by going on line to the RAWCS page and selecting project number 65 on the right hand side and entering in the year box under the project number. St Vincent De Paul is apparently the only other organisation managing a cash appeal so this is a good opportunity for Rotary to make another significant contribution to our Tasmanian communities. Good news stories The Department of Premier and Cabinet (DPAC) is co-ordinating the flood recovery project and has offered to publicise good work being done by Rotary clubs in supporting flood affected individuals or communities. If any club has undertaken flood recovery work please send the details of it (dot points are fine) along with a digital image if available to Robin Thompson (robin.glen@activ8.net.au) who will prepare the story and submit to DPAC. Caravan wanted for BlazeAid BlazeAid is establishing a camp at the Hamilton showgrounds to support its work in rebuilding farm fences. Their co-ordinator is coming from Western Australia but has no vehicle or accommodation so DPAC has sourced a vehicle and has asked Rotary to try to source a caravan. If anyone can help please contact Robin Thompson at robin.glen@activ8.net.au or phone D.G. John President Rob Last week s speaker, David Annear, is a volunteer with the Royal Flying Doctor Service in Tasmania. David s father was the first RFDS pilot in Some interesting statistics: The RFDS has a fleet of 66 aircraft that service a total area of 7.15 million kms and carried out over 65,000 patient transports last year. Launceston has one aircraft that averages approximately 3 flights a week and travelled some 500,000 kms during the last year. David also gave us a detailed description of the flight simulator that is used to train RFDS paramedics. The RFDS receives 40% of its funding from the Federal Government and the remaining 60% is received from community donations. Pamphlets giving details of the RFDS and how to donate were distributed on the night. For those not there, you can get details on It was with great pleasure that we celebrated Bryan Pearce s 90 th birthday!! Bryan has been an active member of our club since 1970 and a Director of most committees as well as President (1987/88). Thank you to Ross Scott who told us about Bryan s achievements in more detail. (Reproduced later in Bulletin) It was second time lucky with Bryan s birthday cake for the night. We had one last week as well, but Bryan could not make it on the night due to bad weather. Tim Biggs gave us an update on the TCF. He has managed to get increased sponsorship from the State Government to the tune of $17,000, bringing total sponsorship to date to $66,000. Well done Tim. The Examiner is holding a Barbeque outside the Deloraine Newsagency to introduce their journalists to the community. It will be held on Thursday 23 rd of June between and 2.30 pm. Our club will provide volunteers, Paul Bowman and Bill Muldoon, to do the cooking. All proceeds will go to our club.

LIONS Lions, so it is said Are quite the performer when they are in bed Having it off up to ten times a day With time left over to go hunt for prey. As humble Rotarians we can t rise to meet The awesome challenge of this feline feat. But in spite of their gloating, It may be worth noting Their victorious roaring and post-coital snoring At the end of the day is really quite boring. Not to mention their breath, not unlike manure That long suffering partners must daily endure. And then there are claws, that scar you for life Ooh, Who wouldn t rather be - a Rotarian s wife.
