3 President s Message Last week we heard from Jacqui Stacey about Winter Fire and the future. This event has brought a very bright spot and warm addition to the winter period. Over only a couple of years it has grown and been a delight to children and adults alike. For those of us who had great fun on Cracker Night, or whatever name each region took for Guy Fawkes Night, it also brings back lovely childhood memories. Help is needed however. As a Club we will talk about this at our Assembly this week. On the other things which we need to talk about - the week with no meeting and an alternate social event and whether this is to continue now the trial period is finished; after that, the discussion on being able to have a night at the pavilion once a month and the form that will take; how that may or may not affect other meetings and particularly the Bush Inn as caterer and our long term relationship with them; and, other groups to cater for our meeting at the pavilion and the balance of that potential to help them fundraise through that. Other issues might also be of concern to each of you so please feel free to let me know before the meeting or bring up the subject in open discussion. This week we also welcome two new Friends of Rotary and we also wish to advise some news about new Honorary Members. Congrats to Bryan Pearce for his and Belinda's spot on Gourmet Farmer last Thursday, and seems like again later, so if you missed it watch out for the next instalment. On that TV note we need 4 Rotarians in Rotary gear for Wednesday morning at 9.15am at the Showgrounds. Bendigo Bank are filming an advertisement and we have been invited to join other local groups to be part of it. Let me know if you can be there. Yours in Rotary, Gayle If you were not present at last weeks Dinner Meeting, you missed the unveiling of the lost President s Chain of Office, which President Gayle displayed when she presented a cheque to the Deloraine A & P Society. (See next page!!)

Presentation At last weeks meeting a presentation was made to the Deloraine A & P Society. This was in the form of a pre -payment for the use of the Showgrounds for the next 4 years. 9 August is Membership Month PR and Membership Director Annette has circulated a sheet of paper for Rotarians to suggest names of people to be approached as prospective Rotarians. August is Membership month and we are all encouraged to invite along guests to our meetings (although this should be happening throughout the year). Why Our Service Organisations are Dying (and how to fix them) This article has been written by Michael Brand and here is the final part... Let Them ReThink You It s not Come do what we do, it s What do you want to do? Can our club be an incubator for young creative to develop new and interesting ways to address our traditional issues? One aspect of emerging generations is their desire to have an impact now. It means they will not wait 5 years to be elected Chair of the Fundraising Committee before seeing their ideas in action. If it s not happening today, they ll walk away. Victor Hwang in his book, The Rainforest, metaphorically notes that most of us were trained to manage farms. By this he means our approach to anything is that we know what we want to grow, know when to plant the seeds, plant in straight lines, kill anything that looks like a weed, know when to harvest and can anticipate roughly our yield. The Rainforest, by comparison, is a chaotic environment where all sorts of genetic mutations are taking place and everything looks like a weed. Hwang s point is that we need more Rainforests. But that means relinquishing some measure of control. Not always easy when we have years of tradition behind us. Yet, by allowing emerging leaders to reinvent our club we can navigate a path to securing our survival. Inventing The Future Service clubs are an American innovation that have evolved into a worldwide institution. While vibrant across the globe, the loss of membership represents a loss of social capital and civic engagement. Today potential members are constrained by lack of time. In addition, they may not see much use in an organisation whose prestige and vitality are in question. It is imperative we reinvent. That may involve passing the torch and allowing an emerging generation of leaders to reinvent our clubs according to their needs. The alternative may be irrelevance and obscurity.
10 District Information Building Future Leaders Building Future Leaders is a three part program for Rotarians by Rotarians. Each module provides insights into Leadership and applies them to a Rotary perspective. The program caters for both long term members of Rotary and for new Rotarians who want to know more about Rotary. Working with experienced presenters the participants work in groups to take a closer look at the Rotary World and together learn more about The Rotary Foundation and how to implement Rotary Projects. Along the way there are opportunities to develop leadership skills and look at how to bring about change. Module 1 is being offered in Hobart 23 rd September and in Deloraine on 24 th September so that everyone has an opportunity to participate. If you think you might be interested in participating go to: September Basic Education and Literacy Month September is Basic Education and Literacy Month. How will your club acknowledge this? Guest Speakers, Vocational Visits, publicise your programmes of visiting schools for reading programmes? Clubs which we have already visited have really taken on the challenge Liz is promoting donation of books to needy causes; District 9830 Books for Literacy. Promote your contributions. What's the difference between an optimist and a pessimist? An Optimist only wears a belt. A Pessimist wears a belt, suspenders, and carries safety pins.

12 MY ROTARY EMBLEM It grants me a great and honourable privilege. Anywhere I go, each wearer of this noble badge is my friend. Into their surroundings I may go with assurance of a warm welcome. It requires of me that I think in harmony with the principles of Rotary, the highest in the land and broad enough to encompass every daily activity. It requires that I dispel the prejudices of race, creed and political views. I must be patient, liberal, just and upright, all to a noticeable degree. It reminds me that it moves in a realm to itself. It is looked upon with unimpaired respect wherever it appears. Its wearer enjoys a distinction that only the violation of its principles can mar. All this speculation makes me wonder if I deserve to wear it. Am I equal to all it implies? THE FOUR WAY TEST First Second Third Fourth Is it the TRUTH? Is it FAIR to all concerned? Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
