Chartered 5 th March, 1957 Assembly: Bush Inn Hotel ~~ Tuesday 6.15 for 6.30p.m. (Postal Address & Phone Number: P.O. Box 85, Deloraine 7304 / ) WEEKLY BULLETIN Rotary Bowel Scan was launched in Tasmania at the beginning of May. Rotarian John McDonald is the Tasmanian Chair for this program and has already distributed 5,500 kits to Tasmanian Rotary Clubs. John and I encourage all Rotarians to purchase kits and encourage your family and friends to do the same. Rotary sells the kit for $15 and they can be purchased from participating pharmacies across the State. The kit is easy to use and potentially could save a life. District Assembly District Assembly is next Sunday and will be held at the Rotary Pavilion Deloraine. District Assemblies are an opportunity to learn about Rotary Programs and more importantly, recent developments in Rotary Programs and the opportunity to network with other Rotary Club Leaders. Every year there are changes in Rotary Programs, different approaches to the Treasurer and Secretarial roles so if you want your club to understand changes and take the opportunity to add value to your club it is important to attend. Phone or District Information From the District Governor Fodder Relief Project Recently Robin Thompson, as chairman of the District Fodder Relief Committee, communicated with clubs requesting them to engage with this project, but unfortunately response has been minimal. Engagement is essentially committing to help source and relocate fodder should an emergency event affect Tasmanian farmers. It is a project for all clubs with the rural ones probably being more hands-on distributing fodder and urban ones helping with publicity and cash to buy fodder. As a District we have committed to the Government as the lead Fodder Relief agency so we need to honour this commitment and see this project as an opportunity for raising the Rotary profile and perhaps increasing membership. Robin and his team are available to discuss this project with clubs so I urge you to give some more consideration to engaging with this project. The fodder relief committee is as follows: Lyndon Isles (Longford) Nigel Pedley (Smithton) James Dunbabin (Sorell) Graham Dent (Westbury ) Robin Thompson (Scottsdale) Rotary Tasmania Police Excellence Award Do you know an outstanding police officer? If you know of a Tasmanian Police officer who has excelled at their job, nominate them for this year's Rotary Tasmania Police Excellence Award. The awards recognise the hard work all police officers contribute to our community. The officers nominated highlight that police work is both varied and challenging and greatly affects people from all walks of life. Policing is not only a job; it is a way of life. Recognising a police officer with a nomination reinforces that members of the police are not simply uniforms, but also community members who share the same concerns as others. How do I nominate? It's quick and easy - you can do it online. Nominations for the award are accepted from any member of the Tasmanian Rotary community. Please provide as much information as you can about the person you are nominating, including a short written explanation about what they have achieved and why you would like to see them recognised. Nominations must be relevant for the period of 1 st July, th March, The more information you provide will give the judges a better understanding and assist them in assessing the nominations. Nominations submitted containing one sentence responses are not sufficient and will not be considered for the awards.

3 Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) This Rotary programme ahs been held at Camp Clayton this past week. The Club sponsored Fraser Deeth to attend, and here are a couple of photos that PP Lesley has supplied. President Rob Once again our guest speaker for the night cancelled and we were left to own devices. Luckily Isabelle came up with the idea of a five minute story from the floor. The theme was a virgin experience and quite a few Rotarians confided their virgin experiences of various kinds(!) We heard of John Dare s attempt at riding a horse backwards. Not a very pleasant experience! (note to self: Do not go flying with John). All in all an enjoyable evening and perhaps we should have more speaker-less evenings in the future. Last weekend MUNA was held at the Community Complex and my thanks to all the volunteers who helped with the set-up and took part in the event. I look forward to hearing Annette s wrap-up of this event at tonight s meeting. (Although I find it hard to believe it could have been successful without the Netherlands being represented!) This coming weekend the District Assembly will be held in Deloraine and volunteers will be required to move chairs and stage components from the Primary School to the Pavilion. They will be required at 1.00pm on Friday afternoon 20 th May. First THE FOUR WAY TEST Is it the TRUTH? Second Is it FAIR to all concerned? Third Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? Fourth Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned? On Friday I was contacted by Marc Smith who informed me that his son Robert, has been diagnosed with incurable cancer. Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA) This last Saturday and Sunday, May 14 th and 15 th saw the 27 th Model United Nations Assembly held at Deloraine Community Complex successfully I acknowledge the hours, expense and effort put into MUNA by myself and all Deloraine Rotarians, Inner Wheel, Deloraine Primary School. I thank you for your assistance in many ways over the weekend, hosting, helping with setting up, clean up or the general running of the weekend. Thank you to the Presidents of the General Assembly, John Dare, Michael Plunkett and John Christie on a job well done and their assistants Michael Horne and Lesley Dare for ably supporting them and keeping them on the straight and narrow. I thank my daughter Emma for the resolutions. I also thank Ann Axelsen and Michael Plunkett for their contribution on the projector. Our caterers, Inner Wheel and Deloraine Primary School Parents and Friends, once again provided us with their usual high standard meals. We did lack some assistance to help wash up after the Saturday night dinner, please keep this in mind for next year Rotarians. Heath Graham provided the music for the Saturday night social. Thank you to John Dare for organising and driving the students returning to Hobart back to Launceston Sunday afternoon to catch the bus to Hobart. The 60 students representing 30 nations were well researched on the resolutions. After a nervous start it took some teams until Sunday morning to relax and provide good debates, representing their countries views with more confidence. I believe the delegates bonded quickly and it assisted in the spirit of the debates. All 15 resolutions were completed. The students thoroughly enjoyed the experience, with the interaction of students forming lasting friendships and they were a credit to their school with exemplary behaviour. 5 Dear Rob, Deloraine House would like to extend our sincere thanks to the Rotary Club of Deloraine for kindly paying for the construction of a new path at our premises in Emu Bay Road. The path has enabled a safe and convenient way for parents with strollers to access the children s play area and child care facilities at our House. Your assistance with this project has allowed Deloraine House to continue to direct funds toward the direct needs of the Meander Valley Community, which we gladly do as our core business. The grand opening of our new building extension was held on Thursday 5 th May. It is only through the generous donations from businesses and organisations like yours that Deloraine House is able to provide this level of support to families. As such, the committee, staff and volunteers of Deloraine House would like to express our sincere thanks for your support. Kind regards Narelle Whatley Co-ordinator Rotary Club of Latrobe International Night Saturday 28 th May A number of Rotarians have attended this function over the past few years. If you would like more information, then contact Secretary Michael. I started reading a book about anti-gravity and now I can t put it down. I saw a Broadway show about puns. It was the ultimate play on words. I had to buy a new leaf blower. My old one sucked. Measure your wealth not by the things you have, but by the things you have for which you would not take money.
