COMMUNITY NEWS Council Elections Meet the Candidates An opportunity has been created for residents of the Meander Valley to meet the candidates who will be up for election in October. All candidates for the Meander Valley Council have been invited to come along to share their plans and aspirations on matters of community interest, and to respond to questions. A public forum will be held at the Deloraine Uniting Church Hall, on Tuesday 4 th October 7.30p.m. Festival of One Act Plays The Deloraine Dramatic Society Festival of One Act Plays will be held on Friday 7 th and Saturday 8 th October at the Little Theatre - a whole weekend of drama - the audience is invited to the p a r t i e s a f t e r t h e performances each night. THAT'S NOT MY JOB This is a story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody. There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it. Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it. Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job. Everybody thought Anybody could do it, but Nobody realised that Everybody wouldn't do it. It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have.

4 ROTARY INFORMATION PAUL P HARRIS (THE THIRD PRESIDENT) Albert White succeeded Schiele to become the club's second president. Paul P Harris deferred any club leadership duties until February 1907, when he was elected the third president of the Rotary Club of Chicago, a position he held until the fall of During his presidency, he formed the Executive Committee, later called the Ways and Means Committee, which met during lunch and was open to any member of the club. The noon meeting was the foundation for Rotary's tradition of club luncheon meetings. Toward the end of his club presidency, Harris covertly worked to extend Rotary beyond Chicago. Initially, INNER WHEEL SEPTEMBER MEETING 28 TH SEPTEMBER TOMORROW NIGHT At the British Hotel 6.30 for 7.00p.m. Apologies to Robin Dixon some club members resisted extension, not wanting to shoulder the additional financial burden it would involve. Harris and other Rotarians persisted and by 1910 Rotary had expanded to several other major U.S. cities. Harris recognized the need to form an executive board of directors and a national association. In August 1910, largely because of Harris's work, Rotarians held their first national convention in Chicago. The 16 clubs then in existence unified as the National Association of Rotary Clubs. It will be at the Earl Arts Centre, on Friday (30 th September), commencing at 8.00p.m. Clifford Craig Run for your Heart This event is now in its fourth year, and is organised in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Launceston. Run for your Heart starts at Aurora Stadium at 10.00a.m., and the 5km course is along the North Esk flood levee, into Heritage Forest and returning to the finish line at Aurora Stadium. The aim of the event is to encourage people to undertake some physical activity to improve their health. This special event promotes acclaimed and emerging Tasmanian artists and raises vital funds for health and medical research. There will be an auction of art works. I can sit and talk with the older students, play games with the younger children or just walk around the school arm in arm with one of my brothers or sisters until the bell rings for evening prayer, then chores, then another meal of dhal bhat before I head home at 8pm. The new campus of SRS is a dramatic improvement on the one I knew last year. There are enough classrooms for all the classes, enough dormitory rooms for all the students and no holes in walls or ceilings. However, facilities are still relatively basic and there are many improvements to be made there is no hot water, showers, or private washing areas, the bedrooms are still cramped, the diet is still very limited and health and nutrition is still poor. I am negotiating with the elder students of the school and the principal as to where they feel the money I have raised is most needed. Today we took the last group of students to get vaccinations against diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis. These were the final group of vaccinations, the students having already received Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Polio and Meningachoccal vaccinations. I am yet to return to the village of Rajban where I was assisting in building a school but I hope to do so within the next month. Travel around Nepal is much safer (and far less tedious) in the dryer months as landslides are less frequent and the humidity is less suffocating. I intend to provide an update in a month when I will hopefully have more to report on. At this stage I am just so grateful to be back with my brothers and sisters and have a lot of hope for various improvements and developments over the next five months. Thank you again for your support, Regards, Taya Tasmanian Craft Fair Friday 4 th Monday 7 th November NEPAL UPDATE From Taya Ketelaar-Jones Hi All, I d like to start with a big thank you again for all those who donated and made it possible for me to be writing this to you all from Nepal. I arrived back amongst the intensity, colour and wonder of Nepal during a typical humid, monsoonal downpour at 10:10pm on the 31 st of August. I had forgotten the intensity of this country the poverty, the traffic, the heat, the rain, the noise. These are the things I missed about Nepal. It is inexplicably good to be back. After a 45 minute, typically hair-raising, journey in an overcrowded local microbus (so far 32 is the record in the regular game of how many people can you fit in a 12 seater microbus? ) I arrive at my new home. Home is now the second storey of a three storey flat which I rent, shared with two families in an area called Buddhanilkantha in the zone of Bagmati, north of Kathmandu city. I live five minutes walk from the new campus of Snowland Ranag School (SRS). Each morning at 9am I weave my way along the cobbled streets, through the rice paddies, dodging the cows, water buffalo, chickens and dogs, avoiding the sewage runoff and through the wrought iron double gates of SRS. Greeted by calls of good morning Taya miss and how are you Taya sister? I start my day by watching the morning assembly and prayer of the 158 students before checking my teaching timetable. I am currently teaching various subjects including English, Social Studies, General Knowledge and Science to grades 4-9. As the day progresses to lunch time and a meal of dhal bhat (rice and watery dhal with an occasional potato) the heat and humidity intensifies. It finally breaks in the afternoon with a torrential downpour, forcing everyone indoors. At least the overabundance of water for hydro-electricity means blackouts are relatively infrequent (around 24 hours in a week as opposed to the daily 14 hours without power typical of the dry winter months). At 5pm the clanging of a bell signifies the end of classes and self study time. Students come flooding out of classrooms, some rush off to complete various chores such as cleaning the dormitory rooms, cleaning the classrooms, hand washing their clothes or their once weekly cold water wash under the outside taps. Others mill around the school, talking with friends, playing sport, reading, while the younger
