ShelterBox Australia Information from July 2012, enewsletter July was another great month for donations, as more Rotary Clubs dispersed their charity funds and the public gave generously. Our sincere thanks go out to all of those who contributed and you only have to read the reports below from Uganda and Russia, to see just how much your efforts are both needed and appreciated. July also saw the launch of the ShelterBox Australia App for Android phones. The app allows users to access the SBA website; blog; Facebook and Twitter pages all from one place. It also allows users to send an or image to the Communications Officer direct from their phone, or link to the donations page. There is a calendar of upcoming events, but perhaps the most useful feature is the "Find Us" application that uses Google Maps to help users find the nearest ShelterBox speaker and Demo box. The app is free to download from: or from Google Play at: DEPLOYMENTS: RUSSIA Flooding A ShelterBox Response Team (SRT) led by Australian SRT member, Andrew Clouting has returned from Russia after delivering life saving aid to flood survivors in the Southern region of Krasnodar. 150 ShelterBoxes and 50 tents were distributed. Andrew said, "I am proud to be part of ShelterBox who truly make a difference to displaced families. UGANDA - Mudslides Heavy rains resulted in a large landslide on the slopes of Mount Elgon in Bududa in eastern Uganda at the end of June, sweeping away three villages and leaving hundreds of families homeless. A ShelterBox Response Team (SRT) worked in conjunction with local Rotarians and the Ugandan Red Cross to distribute aid to those in need. A total of 115 boxes were distributed. PERU - Landslides and Flooding In March ShelterBox responded to two separate disasters in Peru. Heavy rains triggered landslides that caused widespread damage in the remote mountainous region of Apurimac. Whilst in the Loreto region, in northern Peru, the unusually heavy rains led to extensive flooding. In July ShelterBox sent a monitoring and evaluation team back to these regions to assess the situation three months on.

3 From PRESIDENT ANNETTE Kerrie Howe enlightened us last week about the Fox Eradication programme and other invasive species in Tasmania. She is not a local, but hails from Victoria and applied for her present job because she is passionate about saving our endangered species, that would be put very much at risk if foxes became prevalent in Tasmania. She also touched on other invasive species in Tasmania that need to be controlled. She asks us all to contact the if you see any evidence of foxes. I would like all members who have not returned their survey forms, to have them back to me by next week please. (If you have misplaced your copy, the survey is reprinted on the back page of this bulletin. I will be attending the National Model United Nations Assembly in Canberra this coming weekend and I know the 2 girls representing USA are looking forward to the experience. They have been working hard to prepare for the resolutions. President Annette LETTER OF THANKS Athol Wilfred Saunders 7 th May, 1916 to 30 th June, 2012 (Father of PHF Jan and Ian Atkins) A young man visiting a dude ranch wanted to be macho, so he went out walking with one of the hired hands. As they were walking through the barnyard, the visitor tried to begin a conversation, "Say, look at that big bunch of cows." The hired hand replied, "Not 'bunch,' but 'herd.'" "Heard what?" "Herd of cows." " S u r e, I ' v e h e a r d o f cows...there's a big bunch of 'em right over there."

A reminder that all Members are automatically booked in for a meal. 1,000 Cranes for Peace District Governor Partner s Project The Japanese legend of the peace cranes has its origins in the last days of the Second World War. When the atomic bomb fell on Hiroshima, Sadako Sasaki, a two year old girl, was just one of many who witnessed the awesome power of the explosion and was exposed to its radiation. Sadako survived the blast but was to suffer several years later from leukaemia. She believed the ancient Japanese folklore that if she was able to make 1,000 origami paper cranes she would be granted a wish. Her wish was to be well again. Even though weak from illness she folded cranes. Sometimes there was no paper and the cranes were folded from used paper wrappers. Despite folding many paper cranes, Sadako lost her battle, dying in Her mother placed some of the paper cranes Sadako made in the coffin with her little girl. As years passed the story was retold and children would fold cranes in Sadako s memory. A memorial was built in Hiroshima and paper cranes are still left hanging from the frame. This year our Rotary International President Sakuji Tanaka and his wife Kyoko have Peace through Service as Rotary s theme. President Tanaka is encouraging Rotarian s to think about peace when developing plans for this year. He is keen to promote discussion and ideas on peace at three international peace forums to be held in Berlin, Hawaii and Hiroshima in the next 12 months. Rotary International funds many programmes that support peace in our world, such as the provision of safe drinking water, improving education and seeking to ensure that there is enough food for all. Peace scholars are also being trained so that they can work to make a difference in areas of conflict. I hope that you would like to show your support for peace by making a donation of $10 for an origami peace crane. All monies received will be donated to the Rotary Foundation s Annual Giving. You may choose to write a brief message on your crane in support of peace or just write your name. Alternatively a longer message may be written out on paper which I can then use to make an origami peace crane. I will send all these peace cranes to Hiroshima to coincide with the third Rotary Peace Forum in May Buy one for yourself, buy one as a group or send a peace crane as a gift on behalf of a friend. Thank you for continuing to make a difference in our world. Kathy Wilcox If you would like to help with this project, please contact Kathy on jkwilcox@bigpond.net.au

Look around your club now and judge the balance of your club with regard to gender, ethnic background as representing your local community and a range of vocations professions and businesses. A glance around might alert members to some gaps and prospects for new members." A former sergeant in the Marine Corps took a new job as a high school teacher. But just before the school year started, he injured his back. He was required to wear a plaster cast around the upper part of his body. Fortunately, the cast fit under his shirt and wasn't noticeable. On the first day of class, he found himself assigned to the toughest students in the school. The smart-aleck punks, having already heard the new teacher was a former Marine, were leery of him and he knew they would be testing his discipline in the classroom. Walking confidently into the rowdy classroom, the new teacher opened the window wide and sat down at his desk. When a strong breeze made his tie flap, he picked up a stapler and stapled the tie to his chest. Dead silence. He had no trouble with discipline the rest of the year. TASMANIAN CRAFT FAIR Meeting tomorrow night Wednesday 15 th August 7.00p.m. at Rotary Pavilion During a wedding reception the mother of the bride managed to keep from crying until she glanced at the grandparents. The grandmother had reached over to the grandfather's wheelchair and gently touched his hand. That was all it took to start the mother's tears flowing. After the wedding, she went over to the grandmother and told her how that tender gesture triggered her outburst. "Well, I'm sorry to ruin your moment," Grandmother replied, "but I was just checking to see if he was still alive."
