Rotary District 9830 Tasmania District Governor s Newsletter April 2016 RC Hobart s Sail Day celebrates 25 th anniversary. Over $800,000 raised for club projects. Rotary Hobart Sail Day shines again! Kate says that the boats are all provided by local skippers and boat owners, and the provisions for each boat are supplied by local food and wine companies. National Pies was a major sponsor for the 2016 event, as well as great support again from Cascade, Coca Cola, Ashgrove Cheese, The Mercury and Fine Wines Tasmania. On a picture-perfect day of Hobart sunshine on Friday 4 February, RC Hobart staged another bumper Sail Day, the 25th in a fundraising series that has generated more than $800,000 in proceeds for the club's community programs. A regular participant in the Sail Day, the sail training vessel, the Windeward Bound. Club President Kate Domeney said that the annual Sail Day for charity event is made possible by the generous support of many Tasmanian businesses. They buy a yacht or motor boat for the day and take their family, clients and friends out on the River Derwent for a wellorganised program of good food and wine and lots of fellowship and fun. The club's volunteer Sail Day Committee makes it all happen, with many of the Committee members having been associated with the Sail Day fundraiser for more than two decades. Kate Domeney said that as a result of Sail Day, numerous club funding programs for local, national and international support have been made possible. (Continued on page 2)

2 Sail Day continued International Women s Day Breakfast B&E sponsored boats rafting up at lunchtime at Rat Bay to share hospitality. Amanda Shepherd MC interviewing the panel of enterprising women at the International Women s Day Breakfast, organised by RC Tamar Sunrise at the Hotel Grand Chancellor in Launceston. The panel members from left: Carol Bracken (Owner of Tamar Valley Hazelnuts and Tasmanian Rural Woman of the Year 2015), Ella Dixon (CEO of the Migrant Resource Centre) and Tessa Wynne (UTAS student and winner of the 2015 ABC Heywire competition). Proceeds of the breakfast are being donated to Laurel House and White Ribbon. Start them young: Angus getting a taste of sailing during Sail Day 2016 Honoured guests at the breakfast, the women of the Migrant Resource Centre. Tony Reidy, Chairman of the Sail Day committee, enjoying traditional Sail Day rations of party pies and Cascade beer. Women from Tasmanian Irrigation at the International Women s Day Breakfast.

3 Despite From evidence DG John of some fatigue Good Friday Fish Feast at Spring Bay. The Bright Stars, a group of people with disabilities, performing at the Tag Along end of tour at Ghost Rock Vineyard. On the 19 th March, Lesley and I attended the Tag Along end of tour Muster at Ghost Rock vineyard. This was an evening organised by RC Devonport North and what a brilliant evening it was. The Tag Along Tour raised in excess of $31,000 for Australian Rotary Health with the assistance of a number of Rotary clubs and very generous sponsors. Thank you to all concerned. I would like to thank those Rotary clubs who have contributed to the Fiji Cyclone Winston Disaster Appeal. Currently we have contributions of approx. $100,000 combining cash and pledges. Each week more cash is contributed from clubs across Australia. As a result of the media exposure about the Koroipita homes withstanding the destructive force of Cyclone Winston, people from all over the world are requesting information on their design and construction. The latest enquiry has come from the Northern Territory where a group are looking to apply the design to Aboriginal communities. Big turnout of people and special interest vehicles at the Devonport Motor Show on the bank of the Mersey River. The Devonport Motor Show was held on the 20 th March. This event is very well organised and extremely well attended. This year was the 10 th year and turned out to be a record year. Well done to R C Devonport North. On Good Friday, Lesley and I attended the Spring Bay Fish Feast. This is the second time we have attended and it is an excellent event. RC Spring Bay estimated they served 720 plus meals this year which is an amazing effort. Well done R C Spring Bay. Koroipita Model Town houses unscathed after Cyclone Winston passed through. The Rotary Tasmania Conference is almost here. Registrations are being received on a daily basis. Most details are now under control, facilities almost ready, the conversion of the Deloraine Rotary Pavilion to a conference centre done, and R C Deloraine members are ready to welcome you to our Rural and Regional Conference. The leaves are turning autumnal on the trees. Deloraine is turning on the colour. Do not forget to bring your cameras. Lesley and I are looking forward to catching up with everyone. DG John

4 Ulysses AGM RC Launceston catered for breakfasts for the Ulysses AGM. Here they are before sunrise and in a light drizzle, all present and in Rotary attire. Launceston hosted the 2016 Ulysses AGM for senior motor cycle riders with over 2,000 motorcyclists attending from all parts of Australia. Some of the impressive motorcycles that Ulysses members brought to Launceston for the AGM. RC Launceston s John Ayres doing a taste test. The smile tells it all! David Dake Daking (formerly of RC Central Launceston) was a member of the organising committee for Ulysses AGM Members of RC Central Launceston club manned the bar for happy hours. Two of the Ulysses AGM attendees from Alice Springs being served by Joe Ratcliffe (left) and Ross Hart.

5 Presidents Elect Training Seminar (PETS) Participants at the Presidents Elect Training Seminar at Deloraine recently. In the foreground is AG Judy Hicks. I was very pleased with the interaction and engagement of all in attendance at our recent President Elect Training Seminar at Deloraine. There is no doubting the worth of the weekend on a number of levels. Talking over RI goals, District plans, information on managing the role of president. Probably the most important of all are the networking opportunities - Presidents Elect with other Presidents Elect, and Presidents Elect with their Assistant Governors and other members of the District Leadership team. RC Huon Valley members and friends busily engaged in wrapping Easter eggs for distribution to Eldercare residents. Providing Easter eggs to elderly residents in the Huon Valley has become an Easter tradition for the club. Thank you to IPDG Ken Moore on the arrangements for the weekend, and to all who gave their time with presentations. The willingness of our experienced Rotarians to share and interact throughout the weekend added greatly to the overall outcomes for next year s leaders. Fiona and I enjoyed the chance to spend time with old and new friends and are looking forward to next year as we embrace our theme of Rotary Serving Humanity. DGE Gerard & Fiona The RC Smithton contingent at the Presidents Elect Training Seminar (from left): Gerard and Fiona Blizzard and Nigel Pedley. Expect to see a lot more of the Blue Team in the coming Rotary year. And, of course, they will be rolling out the red (or is that blue?) carpet to welcome Rotarians, one and all, to the District Conference in Smithton in If the conference is anything like the previous conference held at Smithton in 2008, it will be a Not to be missed event.

6 Rotary Youth Exchange Rotary Youth Exchange inbound students, Lou Germain (hosted by RC Kingston), left centre, and Maddie Poulsen (hosted by RC Hobart) visited RC Oatlands recently to thank the club for running a bush camp for the inbound students last February. Welcome to new Rotary Club members Member Club Meg Oliver Sue Atkinson Mary Brewer Kieron Mills Launceston Ulverstone West D Entrecasteaux Channel D Entrecasteaux Channel Congratulations to Paul Harris Fellow Madeline Logan Graeme Johns Launceston. Sapphire Pin awarded by The Rotary Foundation. George Town Presented by District 9830 for Graeme s organisation of the Tag Along Tour of Tasmania. The camp gave the inbound students a truly outdoors experience. The students raved about it. Lou and Maddie thanked the club by giving them early Easter chocolates. Representing RC Oatlands in the picture above are Greg Smith (left) and Michael Isles (right). Discovery Day Ostensibly, PDG Lew Pretorius was at the meeting of RC Launceston to talk about the Fiji Cyclone Winston situation, but he sprung a surprise on President Madeline Logan by presenting her with a Paul Harris Fellow Sapphire Pin on behalf of the Rotary Foundation. Year 5 and 6 students in Launceston observing the test to determine just how strong the bridges they constructed from balsa wood and adhesives are. The Science and Engineering Challenge had been modified for year 5 and 6 students as an introduction to these technologies. RC South Launceston members assisted the day by advising the primary students about the individual challenges. Graeme Johns (left) after receiving a Paul Harris Fellow award from DG John with Pam Johns delighted at Graeme s award for his organisation of the recent Tag Along Tour.

7 Vale Albert Viney fter a year of immense change. TH, Albert Viney who appeared in 40 Music Hall productions has passed away. Albert joined RC Wynyard on the 25 th June 1969 and remained a member until ill health forced him to retire this year. He probably served on every committee of the club, and was President in He is shown here appearing in the 2013 production of the Wynyard Music Hall. Manning the entry booth at the Taste of the Huon are RC D Entrecasteaux Channel Rotarians Pam Neid (left) and Muriel Heron and Lorraine Walker (right).

8 Scenes from the International Fellowship of Cricketing Rotarians match in Launceston featuring the Mainlanders versus the Northern Tasmanians. RC Bellerive celebrated St Patricks Day in style with members turning out in green, including Debra Grimmond (left) and Cyril Dann and Jill Gates
