Rotary District 9830 Tasmania District Governor s Newsletter March 2013 Murphys Creek Community Centre Opened Funded by Rotary Tasmania's 2011 Queensland Flood Appeal A consortium consisting of Rotary Tasmania, Rotary District 9630, the Lockyer Valley Regional Council and Murphys Creek Progress Association formed to deliver the community centre (below). Extensive damage to a house at Murphys Creek, caused by the flash flood (photo courtesy of Lockyer Valley Regional Council) Murphys Creek was one of the worst affected towns in the 2011 Queensland floods. The flash flood that swept six people to their deaths, caused massive damage to infrastructure like houses, buildings, roads and bridges. Water levels that had risen 12 metres in 12 minutes started to fall within three hours. The Lockyer Valley Regional Council donated the land for the centre and coordinated planning, design and tendering processes. Ivan Johnston, Building Contractors of Toowoomba, was selected to build the centre. Construction started in August 2012 and the centre was completed in time for the opening on 9 February, Tasmanians were shocked by the massive damage caused by the 2011 Queensland floods and responded very generously to the Queensland Flood Appeal launched by Rotary Tasmania. The fund was swelled to over $900,000 by donations, including one of $165,000 from the Tasmanian Government. District Governor at the time, Ted Richey, convinced his colleagues to allocate all funds to one major community rebuilding project. Consultation with Rotary colleagues in Queensland, District 9630 in particular, led to the decision to build a community centre at Murphys Creek in Queensland's Lockyer Valley. The completed Murphys Creek Community Centre District Conference 2013 Rotary with CONVICTION
2 The opening ceremony attracted major media attention with National Nine TV and ABC TV from Brisbane in attendance. "Food and Chat" Sessions assisting bushfire recovery on the Tasman Peninsula Murdunna, like the neighbouring town of Dunalley, suffered extensive devastation of the area in the January 2013 bushfires. The Mayor of the Lockyer Valley Regional Council, Steve Jones AM, being interviewed by ABC TV In his address at the opening ceremony, the Mayor of the Lockyer Valley Regional Council, Steve Jones AM, said that the combination of service organisations like Rotary, the local council and the local community was a way of the future for communities experiencing major disasters. RC Tasman Peninsula is assisting the Murdunna residents to recover from the bushfire ordeal by putting on " Food and Chat" sessions in the town. Once a fortnight, the Rotary Club takes its food van to Murdunna for a "Food and Chat" session. These are friendly gatherings where people can eat (for free), share stories and find out information on a fortnightly basis. PDG Ted Richey and Murphys Creek Progress Association President Bob Mann, opening Murphys Creek Community Centre Past District Governor Ted Richey, who coordinated Rotary's contributions to the project, said that having the funds available to guarantee the completion of the community centre without recourse to further fundraising was a major factor in successful completion of the facility. In appreciation of the generosity of Tasmanians, Murphys Creek residents have been fundraising for Rotary Tasmania's Bushfire Appeal and the first event in the new community centre will be a Karaoke Night to raise funds. The Tasmania Bushfire Appeal launched by Murphys Creek residents in gratitude for the generosity of Tasmanians Murdunna residents gathering for a free "Food and Chat" session put on by RC Tasman Peninsula These gatherings have grown to be very popular with families. People are now feeling they actually belong to a community that cares for their fellow community members. RC Tasman Peninsula has also been coordinating volunteers arriving on the Tasman Peninsula to assist the recovery. Ten volunteers arrived in a bus and were put to work helping a badly affected family by getting some of the destroyed garden, orchard and hay shed back in order. The Rotary Club organised for the volunteers to camp on one of their member's property at Port Arthur.
3 From President James The past month has seen clubs involved in a wide range of activity that has put the Rotary brand visibly in front of the public. Kathy and I have been able to help some clubs with their events but unfortunately time is short and distances can be long. It was terrific to be able to help the RC of Devonport with the Great Teddy Bear Fly-in and Kite Festival and this year no bears were lost at sea. The RC of Hobart had great success with their annual Sail Day, an event that could be replicated by a northern club looking for a new fundraising venture. RC of Longford benefitted from my improving skill in turning sausages and burgers at the Blessing of the Harvest Festival. Some of the events we could not get to include the RC of North Hobart s Open Day at Lyndhurst; the RC of Sandy Bay s Kite Festival; Festival in the Park jointly presented by the Rotary clubs of Ulverstone and Ulverstone West and the Rotaract Club of Central Coast; and the RC of Central Launceston s Duck Drop held this year at Aurora Stadium. The Bushfire Relief Committee continues to be active in identifying potential projects that can be supported by the funds raised through the District Appeal. Donations stand at about $364,000 and are expected to increase to around $400,000 - a substantial amount that will enable Rotary to make a difference for those communities impacted by the bushfires. There has been a generous donation of some machinery from District 9800 (Victoria) that will be used by clubs and volunteers in the bushfire affected areas. The machinery includes a Mitsubishi Canter dual cab truck, Gehl 4840 Skid Steer Loader, double axle plant trailer, post driver and block splitter. The machinery is a gift that acknowledges the significant donations made by clubs and concerned Tasmanians to the Victorian Bushfire Appeal. Some volunteers have arrived from District 9820 (Victoria) to work on projects identified by Marian Larner and the RC of Tasman Peninsula. It is heartwarming to see how much people want help our fellow Tasmanians in response to the help given to them by our Rotarians after the 2009 Victorian bushfires. Next month offers clubs the chance to participate in a national project Rotarians & Friends of Work. It is an opportunity for clubs to promote what Rotary is capable of doing by showcasing a community project sometime between April 1 st and April 21 st. Please look at the information that has been sent to clubs and consider how your club can be involved. Ducks Dropping from the Sky The Group Study Exchange teams from Denmark and Italy arrived in mid-february and have been visiting clubs around Tasmania. They are both exceptional teams so please catch up with them at the District Conference or look at their itinerary on District website to see if you can attend a meeting with them before they leave later in March. Thank you to the host clubs that have done a magnificent job in making the teams welcome and providing them with memorable vocational and cultural experiences. We also welcome the return home of the group that visited Nepal for the Gift of Sight Eye Camp. A number of new projects in Nepal have been looked at and we hope to progress some of these during this year and into the next couple of years under our Relationship Agreement with District Annual Giving to the Rotary Foundation will take place at the District Assembly on Sunday 26 th May. This is a great time for clubs to either donate to our Foundation or give a pledge for a donation to be made by 30 th June. I look forward to seeing you at the District Conference. DG James Chopper pilot Darryl Taylor congratulates DG James on his accurate aiming of the teddy bears at the Teddy Bear Fly In.
4 One Good Turn Deserves Another: Victorian Rotary Club assisting Tasman Peninsula bushfire victims Members of RC Hazelwood erecting a shed to replace the one destroyed in the Tasman Peninsula bushfire in January. The Traralgon region in Victoria was badly affected by the 2009 bushfires. RC Tasman Peninsula provided assistance to RC Hazelwood in that region. Help included hosting whole families (total of 130 people) from Traralgon on holidays on the Tasman Peninsula. When the bushfires struck on the Tasman Peninsula in January this year, the RC Hazelwood was one of the first responders. It sent a cheque for $2,500 to their Tasman Peninsula counterparts to purchase gifts for those volunteering their services e.g. helping stranded tourists, evacuated locals and those who lost so much in the fires. RC Morwell chipped in with a donation of $1,000 and also had members volunteering alongside the RC Hazelwood members. RC Hazelwood organised donations of new and near-new furniture and filling up a 40 foot container that it dispatched to the Tasman Peninsula for the local Rotary Club to distribute to bushfire victims. The Hazelwood club is following this up by filling up a half-sized container to send to their Tasman Peninsula Rotary colleagues for distribution. There was no way Italian GSE team member Chiaro was going to be allowed to move on from Evandale without riding a penny farthing bike. The Rotary Foundation Grants The 1 st of July brings a new era to The Rotary Foundation Grants process. Rotary Foundation grants support Rotarians efforts to change lives and serve communities. Through District Grants we are able to assist clubs and the district to address immediate needs locally, nationally and abroad. The District Future Grants Committee will manage and disburse funds to support district and club sponsored activities, including vocational training teams, scholarships, humanitarian service projects, and cultural exchanges, provided they are aligned with the Foundation s mission of: Doing good in the World The District Future Grants Committee will have available in the Rotary year $19,845 available to allocate to clubs on a $ for $ basis to allocate to projects. The grant funding will be limited to $2000 for each grant, however the District Grants Committee will give consideration to any special requests over this amount. Rotary Clubs will have until the 13 th of May to submit project proposals for funding. The Project Application can be found on the website and will need to be completed and submitted by to the Future Grants Committee Chair by that date. 5 5 Sail Day Record Result The 22 nd Annual RC Hobart Charity Sail Day brushed off Tasmania s difficult economic conditions and the only wet day for weeks to record another record result last Tuesday (February 19). The participants enjoyed a great day of fellowship and fun thanks to the continued generosity of Hobart s yachting and motor boating fraternity who are always willing to freely share their vessels with our business sponsors and guests. For those aboard the faster yachts it was a brisk sail down the Derwent into D Entrecasteaux Channel. Those aboard motor boats had a more sheltered trip to the same calm waters off Conningham where the flotilla rafted up and enjoyed fellowship, a challenging quiz and singing of sea shanties accompanied on the electronic organ by Rotarian Robert Brand. As a result of very generous sponsorship, another successful raffle campaign and the high level of participation we are pleased to announce that the amount raised from this event is almost $57,000 which is yet another record result. At a time when there is so much need for help in our community, it is wonderful that people have been so generous, but also having such a good time in the process, David said. Kite Festival and Teddy Bear Fly-In Organised by RC Devonport Part of the Sail Day fleet rafted up at Conningham Chairman of the Sail Day organising committee, Past President David Catchpole, said for many this has become an annual event in their calendar where sponsors and owners request each other s company for the day. David said that the concept of the day had been brought to the Rotary Club of Hobart 23 years ago from Auckland by Julian Swinstead (former general manager of The Mercury) and had grown from an initial small fleet to the 65 participating vessels this year. David paid tribute to his very experienced and capable organising committee; each member of the committee plays a pivotal role in the success of the day, whether it is organising catering, finding vessel sponsorship, matching boats and sponsors, securing raffle prizes, preparing and dealing with the mountain of correspondence or any one of the myriad other tasks required to make the event a success. 6 6 Name Shane James John Packham Nadira Pardo Deb Sealy Sonia Morganti Adam Prewer Colleen Davidson Ahmed Swidan Wendy Gray Welcome to New Rotarians Wendy Gray and President Brian Neilson RC Smithton Club Burnie Burnie Lindisfarne Salamanca South Launceston Youngtown D'Entrecasteaux Channel Launceston Smithton Ahmed Swidan of RC Launceston - Colleen Davidson of RC D'Entrecasteaux Channel, flanked by PDG Bill Brundle and President Lorraine Walker Book Launch Marijke Lockwood signing a copy of her book "Mama" at the book launch On Friday night 8 February, 50 people attended the official launch of the book Mama written by Past President of RC Youngtown, Marijke Lockwood, at Petrarch's Bookshop in Launceston. The book, based on Marijke s memoirs, is a true life story about growing up in difficult circumstances in the 1950 s and 1960 s. When Marijke was ten years old her beloved mama passed away, leaving behind a grieving husband and nine children under fourteen. The children were in an orphanage and it wasn t long before her father remarried, much to Marijke s consternation. In the 1950 s grief counselling was not available, and Marijke struggled to understand why her mother had died. She found that writing about this five year period of her life had brought back many memories she had suppressed for so long. Yet she also recalls being part of a loving and close family. Deciding to forge a new life the family moved from Amsterdam, the Netherlands, to Launceston, Tasmania. The story is that of an emotional rollercoaster as Marijke tried to come to terms with her loss, and a new country. It is told with frank honesty, humour and love. Marijke told her captive audience at the launch that this book had been a difficult project, which took four years to complete. She said that, as she wrote, she often found it hard to continue as the memories overwhelmed her. At other times she would laugh or cry as particular incidents came to mind. The telling of this challenging, yet exciting and changing period of her life had been cathartic and healing. Nadira Pardo with President Peter Rasmussen of RC Lindisfarne Anyone who would like a copy of the book can contact Marijke on and she will organise to have a copy delivered. Alternatively, the book is available at Petrarch s bookshop.
7, Impressive results for RYDA - Accident and death rates in 17 to 25 year olds fall to almost zero Inbound Rotary Youth Exchange students on the Tassie Tour Bruce Gowans delivering his RYDA "My Wheels" presentation to RC Devonport North Statistics are showing that accident and death rates in year olds have dropped to almost zero, much of this can be attributable to Year 10 people attending Rotary Youth Driving Awareness courses. This was the great news from Bruce Gowans when he delivered his RYDA presentation titled "My Wheels" to members of RC Devonport North. Bruce is a veteran presenter at RYDA courses. Delivering fresh vegetables for bushfire relief No one mentioned the crocodiles that are migrating south due to global warming!! The first Rotary Youth Exchange team in Targa Tasmania!! (Photos courtesy of Gerard Blizzard and Gill Whitehouse) RC Lindisfarne's John Behrens drove his truck to the North West to collect fresh vegetables for delivery to Food Bank for distribution to bush fire victims and volunteers. John collected a pallet full of onions and bagged potatoes from David Addison, and Jim Ertler provided a bin full of carrots, onions and beetroot. Foodbank have delivered 65 tonnes of stockfeed to affected farmers, and 250 tonnes of food and drinks to affected residents and volunteers including firefighters and fencing teams.
