1 BULLETIN NO 7 15 August, 2014 P O Box 1261, Devonport 7310 PH: Principal s Report As a school we work exceptionally hard to develop a sense of community; of belonging. In fact one of our four key values is Connectedness. It is vital that students feel included within this community and many of our school structures and student leadership groups reinforce this message regularly. Whilst being part of a community would not be difficult for the majority of students the ability to belong to a group does not always come easily to everyone. Students need to understand the importance of social norms ; that is following those rules, regulations and processes that enable society and our school community to function. A major issue becoming prevalent in wider society is beginning to have an impact on student behaviour here at school; that is the response of students to a problem or issue they may be having with another student or teacher. I refer to the increasing physical aggression which is occurring in these situations. We have had a number of instances recently where students have responded in an intimidating manner or used physical violence; in other words, fighting to solve their problems. This is happening with both boys and girls. Attending school, going to class and making the most of learning should be a priority for all students. Part of our responsibility as a school is to teach students the appropriate social skills necessary to function in society. Whilst it is our responsibility to ensure that students have access to school and learning programs, students also have a responsibility to behave in a way that makes that access possible. Reece High School will never condone violence or physical aggression as an appropriate response to individual situations and I have a duty of care to ensure all students are safe at school. Therefore students who choose to respond in this way will not have access to learning programs until they are able to demonstrate the ability to behave in a more acceptable manner. It is disappointing that a minority of students do not understand or value the positive impact of belonging to a community. I hope that we can see an increase in connectednesses from this group of students. Anne Stewart Principal Department of Education

4 Reece High Mainland Trip 2015 Reece High will be offering a 2015 trip to Sydney/ Gold Coast for 6 days in the September holidays next year depar ng on Sunday 27 th September and returning Friday 2 nd October Students in grade 7, 8 and 9 this year are eligible to apply. Details of the trip include; 6 day Sydney and Gold Coast tour. Flights depart from and return to Launceston. Overnight travel from Sydney to Gold Coast. Visit sights of Sydney, including Opera House, Sydney Harbour Bridge, Sydney Eye, Powerhouse Museum, Bondi beach, and a Sydney Harbour cruise. Visit Wet n Wild, Dreamworld and Movieworld on the Gold Coast Shopping at Harbourtown Gold Coast. The cost (subject to airfare and fuel costs) will be $1125. The figure is based on either a bus load of 48 students or a bus load of 58 students par cipa ng. If less students a end then the cost will be adjusted up accordingly. This cost includes most meals, theme park entry, flights and accommoda on. The School Associa on has made a decision that any student with outstanding levy payments or who owes money to the school will be unable to par cipate un l all debts are cleared. If you wish your child to par cipate, please return the slip below with a $200 non refundable deposit by Friday 29 th August Instalment payments will then be made to ensure the full payment has been received before August Further informa on including an i nerary will be available at a later date. 5 On Sunday 3rd of August, 39 students were up bright and early ready to board a plane for the 2014 ski trip. The trip got off to a great start with shopping at the Essendon DFO. Then a few people went and watched a Melbourne vs. Brisbane Lions footy game while others continued to shop in the Melbourne CBD. For five nights we stayed at Alzburg in Mansfield and at 7:30 each morning we were all on the bus ready for a big day on Mt Buller! Each morning we had a lesson and then the remainder of the day was free time. After each day on the mountain 3 students were rewarded for their efforts by receiving either a Blue jersey for 'King of the Mountain', Yellow for the 'Leader of the Mountain' and Green as the 'Sprinters Jersey', each of these recognised the outstanding efforts made by students. At the end of the trip we had overall winners for each category, voted by fellow students using the 'Brownlow' voting system. The overall winners of the trip had to wear their 'professionally designed' Kmart tops on the flight home to Launceston. Codi Jordan and Jorja Howell Speaking on behalf of all the students on the trip we couldn't have asked for a better 5 teachers to share this experience with, they all entertained us for the duration of the trip and we would like to say a big thank you for making the trip even more enjoyable. So thank you too, 'Frank the Tank' for being our security guard, Ms Benson for being a great first aid lady, Mrs Armitstead for surrounding us with happy vibes, Mr Wilson for being able to relate every situation to a song and Miss 'nightclub' Knight for being so encouraging on the slopes. During our time on the mountain, and also at the resort, there were many laughs and many memories made. We are already reminiscing.

6 CONGRATULATIONS Mathletics We would like to congratulate the following students for their outstanding achievements in Mathletics: Tia Van Der Velde Jacob Harris Emmerson Long These students have received the top results for Reece High School by mastering more activities than other students in the school. To master an activity you must achieve a score equal to or greater than 85%. RHS PIE DRIVE REMINDER Pie drive order forms with money are due on Monday the 25 th of August; LATE ORDERS WILL NOT BE PROCESSED. Don t miss out on this great opportunity for some delicious food and to raise money for new sports uniforms for the school Sports uniforms include football jumpers, inter-high tops and netball uniforms.
