5 LETTER TO PARENTS Dear Parents, Greetings and welcome to Choir Camp 2017! The faculty and staff have worked hard to plan a week filled with great music making and fun activities. We know that our campers come from a variety of backgrounds and have different sets of experiences. Some may be apprehensive about being away from home or making friends, while others may be excited to spend a week away from their usual social circle. Whatever the circumstance, the faculty and staff at choir camp are ready to ensure that every camper has a great week with us at UW Whitewater. But to make this happen, we need your child s help. Good behavior and good attitudes are a necessity. Before camp begins, please take the opportunity to discuss the camp experience and the importance of proper conduct with your child. Aside from the obvious importance of following camp rules, making safe choices, and treating camp personnel, fellow campers, and campus property with respect, the faculty and staff request that parents discuss the following policies with their children: Cell Phone Use: We understand that most campers will be bringing a cell phone with them to camp. Campers are more than welcome to call home at appropriate times to update loved ones on their camp experiences. The cell phone should not, however, serve as a means of distraction or disruption to your child or any other camper in classes, rehearsals, meetings, or concerts. Please encourage your child to turn off and put away his/her cell phone during these times as a way of showing respect to teachers, conductors, fellow students, and to the musical experience choir camp is designed to provide. Concert Behavior: A unique aspect of choir camp is that campers attend nightly concerts given by faculty, staff and fellow campers. These concerts are designed to be learning experiences where campers can see what professional musicians, college students, and people their age are capable of. Nightly concerts are casual events for which dressing up is not necessary. However, good behavior is especially important during these times. While concerts are going on, all campers should be sitting up straight in their seats, focusing on whatever is happening on stage. Unacceptable concert behaviors include eating, drinking, making noise, talking, passing notes, playing handheld games, texting, moving in and out of the recital hall during a performance, placing feet or legs on the seats in the next row, and sleeping. These concerts are not long (between 45 and 60 minutes each) and good behavior as a form of respect to the performers will be expected the whole time. On the last day of camp, all of the ensembles will be giving a final concert that we hope parents will attend. Please reinforce the behavior we have been expecting all week from your child by being a respectful audience member. Please note that flash photography is distracting to the performers on stage and is NOT allowed at the final concert on Friday or at any other concert during the week. In Case of Problems: We hope that camp passes without any problems for every camper. However, in case of any issues, the camp counselors are your child s first line of defense. Counselors often get messages in the morning from a worried parent who received a call from their child late in the night about a problem they were having with a roommate, someone in class, or homesickness. By the time the counselors can get the problem straightened out, it s often hours later. Please encourage your child to bring any problem they are having to a counselor right away. Also, if your child calls you with a problem during the week of camp, before you hang up the phone and call UW Whitewater, please ask

6 your child if they have talked to a counselor about the issue. If they haven t, please tell them to do so. The sooner the counselors know about the issue, the sooner it can be resolved. Thank you in advance for your cooperation on these matters. With you and your child s help, we are looking forward to a great week of camp! Sincerely, Dr. Robert Gehrenbeck, Director UW W Summer Choir Camp (262) (office) gehrenbr@uww.edu

8 RULES AND REGULATIONS These rules have been established to make this camp an enjoyable and safe experience for everyone. Violations of these rules may result in parental notification and, depending on severity of the infraction, dismissal from the camp. Students so dismissed will not receive any refund of camp fees. 1. Smoking, the use of alcohol and other drugs, firearms, weapons or fireworks are strictly prohibited. Parents will be notified and violators will be sent home immediately. There will be no refund of fees for violation of this policy. 2. All campers are confined to the University campus proper; any trips off campus require written permission from the parent and approval of the camp director or head counselor. All campers making off campus trips must be accompanied by a staff member unless written permission from the parent is provided. 3. Any damage to University property by campers will be paid for by the camper or his/her parents. 4. Campers are encouraged to have their own health insurance as limited accident insurance is provided by the University. University insurance coverage is included in your registration and covers you only while you are on campus and for camp related accidents. If you are a commuter, this insurance will not cover you while you are traveling to or from camp. Camp insurance does not cover pre existing injuries. 5. Campers will be given a meal band that you must bring to every meal. Lost or destroyed bands will be replaced at the dining center at a fee to the camper. 6. Campers are not allowed to enter any residence hall other than the one assigned to their camp. Boys are not allowed to enter girls rooms and vice versa. With the exception of check in and check out, no visitors are permitted in your room at any time. 7. Campers are responsible for their own money and personal items; the University and the camp are not responsible for lost items. KEEP YOUR DOORS LOCKED AT ALL TIMES. DO NOT SHARE YOUR ROOM KEYS WITH OTHERS. 8. There will be no hazing, bullying, taunting or teasing of other campers or guests on campus. Violators will be dealt with according to the policy in item number 15, below. 9. All activities will cease at 10:30 p.m. The doors of the residence hall will be locked at this time. Lights out and bed check will be conducted by camp staff at 11:00 p.m. 10. Shirt and shoes must be worn at all times. 11. Camper identification badge must be worn at all times. 12. Residence hall campers are not permitted to ride or drive in automobiles while camp is in session. Residence hall campers will turn in car keys at registration. They will be returned at check out. You must notify the camp director if you will be having a car at camp so that it does not get ticketed. continued on next page

9 13. Rules of deportment are simply that girls and boys will behave as ladies and gentlemen, and follow the day to day schedule. Students are required to attend every class and rehearsal for which they are scheduled. 14. Choir Camp seeks to maintain an environment free of discrimination, intimidation, and harassment based on gender, race, creed, national origin, sexual orientation, or disability. Language, behaviors and/or attitudes that intimidate, offend, or debilitate campers or staff members will not be tolerated. Campers are encouraged to speak with camp staff and with their parents if any concerns about these matters arise. 15. Consequences of poor behavioral choices may include: Speaking to the camper about misbehavior Loss of privileges Other natural consequences Contacting parents In extreme cases, expulsion from Choir Camp Behaviors for which the last consequence could occur would include: Violent behavior and/or aggression, directed towards others or oneself Unsafe behaviors Permanent damage and/or theft of others property or of university property Leaving campus without prior parental and counselor permission, as described above in items 2 and 12 Violations of any other camp policies described above, including the absolute prohibition of drugs, alcohol, firearms, and weapons of any kind Defiance towards camp staff Repeated small scale infractions of camp rules and policies in spite of warnings from camp staff Extreme cases of rule violations resulting in expulsion are rare. But it is crucial that all campers understand these policies and the reasons behind them. The goal is to establish a cooperative, supportive, and fun atmosphere among all the camp participants. We look forward to welcoming your student to our camp and having a great week together!
