2 ABOUT OUR CAMP QUICK REFERENCE Summer of 2018 marks our 4th year of Summer Camp in Lucan Biddulph! Each year we incorporate new elements and events into our program. We run throughout the summer and children are introduced to diverse programming that includes physical activity, arts and crafts, sports, the outdoors, free time, themed activities and visits from special guests. We also go swimming daily at the Lucan Pool (weather dependant). We have an energetic and dedicated camp team that works hard to make each summer the best it can be for you and your family. All of our programs have rules and regulations that are designed for your child s safety. Our camp leaders review the rules regularly at camp to ensure camper awareness. In order to meet all precautions for participant health and safety, we ask that you make our camp staff aware of any allergies, medical conditions, or behavioral concerns that your child may have. As always, if you have any suggestions, ideas, or concerns, give us a call and we will do the best that we can to assist you! We are looking forward to another fantastic summer! COST: $ per week (9am-4pm), discounts available for families enrolling more than one child. Registration is in person at the Lucan Community Centre, 263 Main Street, Lucan ON between the hours of 8:30-5:00pm. There is a secure drop box outside of the office for after hour s payments to be made. 3 WHAT TO BRING TO CAMP PLEASE LABEL AND SEND THE FOLLOWING WITH YOUR CHILD DAILY: Peanut free lunch Peanut free snacks Refillable water bottle Bathing suit Towel Change of clothing Hat Sunglasses Sunscreen Running shoes Flip flops for the pool Lifejacket (if preferred your own) SUNSCREEN: Due to allergies, sunscreen will not be provided by LB Staff. Please make sure to send a bottle of sunscreen (labelled with camper s name) with your child daily. Our motto is SLIP, SLAP, SLOP! Slip on your shoes, Slap on a hat, and Slop on the sunscreen! Please apply sunscreen in the morning at home. Staff will help children to re-apply sunscreen a half-hour before we go swimming. WATER: It is recommended that you send a labelled water bottle with your child(ren) to camp in order to keep them properly hydrated. We have a water refill station on site. WHAT NOT TO BRING TO CAMP PLEASE LEAVE AT HOME THE FOLLOWING: Cell phone ipod Electronics Weapons (or anything that looks like a weapon) Jewellery Money Toys and trading cards Clothes that cannot get dirty! Staff is not responsible for lost or stolen items brought to camp. HEALTH AND SAFETY: We strive to make our camp a safe place for campers to spend their summer. We work hard to minimize risk and educate campers about health and reckless risk-taking, while still allowing kids to be kids. Most accidents at camp are minor (scrapes, cuts, bruises) and do not prevent a camper from continuing his or her day at camp after receiving basic first aid. If staff determines that a camper needs immediate medical attention that cannot be provided at camp, then the camper will be taken to University Hospital. Parents will be notified immediately, and a camp staff member will remain with the camper until a parent arrives. Additionally, if a camper is sick and needs to go home for the day, parents will be notified. 3

4 PROCEDURES SIGN IN/ SIGN OUT: Sign in is in the Old Library area of the Lucan Community Centre. Bags and coats are placed along the wall in the Old Library upon arrival. Once all campers have arrived we will go over a fire drill and rules on the Monday of camp, and the Coordinator will call any children who are absent, unless a parent has communicated with us otherwise. ILLNESS: If your child becomes ill during the day a parent/ guardian or emergency contact will be called to take them home. Please do not send your child to camp if you suspect they are not well. Children who are ill upon arrival to camp will be sent home. We are unable to provide refunds due to illness. LATE PICK UP: Parents are expected to pick their child up promptly from camp at the end of the day. Late pickups increase our staff costs; therefore an administrative fee will be implemented for repeat offenders. BULLYING AND TEASING: Our staff members try to be aware of bullying situations at camp; however, there may be times when our staff is unaware that this type of behaviour is going on. If your camper feels bullied and you believe staff members either don t know about it or are not addressing it properly then please call the Recreation Coordinator. We will address the situation in an appropriate and timely manner. MEDICATIONS: Please follow the procedure below when sending medication to camp: On the first day of your arrival to camp, please notify your child s camp coordinator that your child needs to take medication during camp hours. You must also fill in the section of your child s registration regarding the type of medication, dosage and dispensing time. Send the medication in the original prescribed container. Please send enough medication for the full week on the first day. Medication should be given directly to the head counsellor or Recreation Coordinator by an adult. If your child has a severe allergy, please notify and make sure staff members are aware of this. If they carry an Epi-pen, please let staff know, and inform the head counsellor when dropping your child off where the epi-pen is located. We require you to complete a form allowing staff to assist in administering an epi-pen to your child. CAMPERS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS: We welcome children of all ability levels. If your child has special needs, please call the Recreation Coordinator to discuss any safety concerns and staffing needs for your child. One important consideration if you child requires additional support at school or at home, has a tendency to exhibit aggressive behaviours; does not understand danger; has a physical and/or learning disability that affects his/ her communications, mobility or comprehension, he/she will require one-onone support at camp, as we are not large enough to devote staff time to each child. If 4

5 this is a concern for you, please contact the Recreation Coordinator to discuss options. BEHAVIOURAL EXPECTATIONS: We strive to offer a safe environment, both physically and emotionally, for everyone at camp, and we emphasize respect with all of our programs. Certain behaviours are never tolerated, such as violent language or acts, and any behaviour that we believe may endanger a camper or staff member, either physically or emotionally. Most of the time campers just need a reminder or gentle redirection. Should the camper persist with behaviour that is unsafe, dishonest, uncooperative or disruptive, he or she may be removed from the group and given the opportunity to talk things over with the Recreation Coordinator. We will do our best to listen to campers needs and feelings when discipline issues arrive. We do not, however, have the resources to work with children one-on-one for extended periods of time during the day. If you child needs one-on-one support, and/ or is given such support in school, please speak with our Recreation Coordinator prior to enrolling them in camp. We go swimming daily from 1:00 3:00 at the Lucan Pool, as long as the weather cooperates. Our pool is staffed with certified lifeguards, and our camp staff go in the water with the participants. Our ratio for swimming is 1:7. Campers that are 6 and under must wear a lifejacket while in the pool, regardless of swimming ability, and are restricted to the shallow end of the pool. Children that are 7 and over may swim in the deep end only if they pass the swim test administered by the lifeguards. If they do not pass they are restricted to the shallow end. The swim test consists of a 25m swim on their FRONT, and they must complete the distance without touching the wall or floor. This is recommended from the City of Stratford., and is a similar policy to other camps in the area. Some lifejackets are provided by the Township, however if your son or daughter has their own that is preferred. Puddle jumpers and water wings may be worn by campers over 6, but those 6 and under must wear a life jacket. Should a child need to be spoken to 3 or more times, or behave in a drastic nature, a note will be sent home for the parent/ guardian to review, sign and return or a parent/ guardian may be contacted by phone. Children who threaten the safety of themselves or others will be asked to leave the program. SWIMMING AT CAMP: 5

6 OFF SITE TRIPS: On Monday s & Friday s our camp will visit the Lucan Library from A.M. Camp staff are located at the front and back of our group when walking, and we use the buddy system. Prior to leaving for the library, participants are reminded of basic library etiquette and safety reminders. Camp staff uses the crosswalks when crossing the street with participants. Other offsite trips that are planned will be detailed in the newsletter that is sent home the Friday before camp. BRAVO! OUR REWARD SYSTEM FOR GOOD BEHAVIOUR: Each day campers will have the chance to earn BRAVO tickets for good behaviour. At the end of the week, the child with the most tickets is the BRAVO winner, and receives a prize. Tickets are awarded at the end of each day, and campers are told what tickets are for. In the event of poor behaviour, tickets can also be taken away. FREE PLAY: There will be opportunities for campers to participate in free play, either at the playground, outside or in the gym. During free play staff will be positioned throughout the area to ensure maximum supervision. Colouring, board games and other activities are also available during free play. 6

7 CAMPER CODE OF CONDUCT Is your child program ready? To support the success, safety and inclusion of all individuals registered and participating in our programs, it is important that our campers are program ready. All children need to be program ready to participate in our camp. Your child should be: Able to take direction and instruction from a staff person Able to interact and participate in the program in a way that is safe for themselves and others Our goal is to provide safe and fun programs for your child. Staff have been trained on a variety of behaviour management techniques to encourage positive behaviour and self-discipline, but if your child is causing harm to himself/ herself or to someone else, staff may need to intervene, and your child may need to be removed from our program. As a camper, I understand and agree to the following code of conduct: 1. I will show respect to other campers and treat them as I would like to be treated, with respect and courtesy. 2. I will help to make others feel welcome and included in all camp activities. 3. I will not tolerate bullying, name calling, teasing, unkind behaviors, or exclusion of others from camp activities. 4. I will show respect to camp staff and follow their instructions. 5. I understand that pushing, hitting, kicking and fighting are not acceptable behaviors. 6. I will respect the property of others at camp. 7. I will not bring cell phones or other electronic devices that could take away from the camp experience. 8. I will know and follow the rules of camp. 9. I will have fun, learn, grow, make new friends and have a great time at camp. I will be fully responsible for my own actions and understand that failure to follow this code of conduct could result in my dismissal from camp. Camper Signature: Date: Parent Signature: Date: 7
