6 Handsome Home With History This attractive property dates back to the 1500s and has a rich and fascinating history. It was originally part of Dickleburgh Hall Manor, which was mentioned in the Domesday Book, and there s been a home on the site at least since the 1200s when it belonged to Roger Bygod, Earl of Norfolk. The current hall was built in 1538 when the Howard family were the main landowners, and it s mentioned in Nikolaus Pevsner s The Buildings of England. It also has a unique claim to fame as the birthplace of the pure-bred Suffolk Punch horse: Back in the 1700s, a Mr Glebe was living here and he was concerned that the Suffolk Punch was becoming impure. He decided to breed the very best and all bloodstock of this breed can now be traced back to the hall, the owner explains. During their four decades here, the owner and his wife have continued to upgrade and improve the hall, including reroofing the main house in 2005.

7 Friends And Family When the owners came here they were simply looking for a family home and never dreamed that they would find such a fine place as this. They love character properties and found themselves unable to resist the opportunity to make this their own. There s so much space here but it doesn t feel overwhelming. It s comfortable and welcoming, whether there s just the two of us at home or whether we have a house full of family and friends, they smile. The property retains a wealth of period features throughout the accommodation, including a superb minstrels gallery on the second floor. There are gorgeous original oak stairs, wide floorboards, picture rails, vaulted ceilings and stunning fireplaces, as well as more modern additions such as the Aga in the family kitchen. As you explore the house it s clear it would be an incredible place in which to raise a family and the owners have made wonderful memories here with their children and grandchildren: We have a party here every New Year with catering and live music. The children all got married here too which was very special, the owners confirm, The house is breathtaking all decorated for Christmas and the grandchildren all enjoy playing in the snooker room.

16 Ample Opportunity When the owners first came here they knew nothing about farming or livestock but began to grow hay and decided to have cattle here too. A short while later they offered a home to a local farmer s pigs. We learned a lot and it was a great experience for our children, they smile. They have also had a holiday business here and you could do that again, making lots of long-term friends from repeat bed and breakfast guests. One of the barns has been converted to a little cottage that makes a great guest suite, with a bedroom, bathroom and seating area, offering visiting friends privacy and independence. The former cattle barn is now a magnificent sociable space with games room and entertaining lounges. It has its own toilet block and small kitchen too, along with planning permission to create nine en-suite bedrooms if desired. Another open barn offers workshop potential and the owners have used this as a badminton court in the past this is a property that offers a huge amount of choice for business or pleasure!

18 A Superb Setting The gardens have great appeal too and much of the land is lit so it s stunning at night time. The hall faces south and enjoys views over the grounds dotted with ponds and mature trees, including copper beech, oak, horse and sweet chestnut. The gardens are also home to lovely fruit trees including apple and walnut. If you re a keen equestrian or you d like to have a pony or two for the children, the seven-acre paddock is sure to hit the spot or you could use it for other livestock. The owners have enjoyed spending many happy hours outside, wandering the grounds, picking fruit or simply relaxing in the sunshine, drink in hand. It s so peaceful here but you re just minutes away from the A140 for easy access to Diss: When we came here, we had to travel down to London or across the region for work, so the central setting was a great advantage. Now we re retired, we love being within a short drive of the glorious Suffolk coast. It s a beautiful part of the world, they said. 22 On The Doorstep The property enjoys a lovely rural position with no immediate neighbours on the outskirts of the village of Dickleburgh. There are everyday facilities in the village including a post office, public house, and an OFSTED Outstanding Primary School! Directions From Diss proceed in an easterly direction along the A1066 to the roundabout which is the junction with the A140. Turn left and proceed north along the A140 to the next roundabout and proceed straight over signposted Norwich. Ignore the signpost to Dickleburgh and continue north on the a140, then take the next turning right into Norwich Road before turning left into Semere Green Lane. Continue down Semere Green Lane and shortly after passing Lonely Road on the right hand side you will come to the gates to the property also on your left hand side.
