1 APRIL 27, 2018 NEW MARKETING CAMPAIGN Many thanks to everyone for your attendance and your reactions to Dave Mowers presentation. This is a big move forward for the museum, as were the branding steps undertaken by Mystic Seaport in years past. We value your comments and perspective and please keep them coming forward. As Dave said this is a first step, and many images were examples. Please know that your comments were taken to heart. As requested, please keep the specifics of the presentation among us until May 1. -Steve White WILLIAM C. NOYES VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR AWARD CALL FOR NOMINATIONS The Office of Volunteer Services is seeking nominations for Volunteer of the Year Award. The William C. Noyes Volunteer of the Year Award was established in 1998 through the generosity of Bill s widow, Bettye, and donations received in Bill s memory. The award is presented each year to honor a Museum volunteer who best personifies Bill Noyes example and the true spirit of a Mystic Seaport volunteer. The award recipients are listed on a brass plaque that hangs in the Office of Volunteer Services. The award will be presented at the Celebration of Volunteers held on July 18, The name of the winner is kept a secret until the presentation. JUNIOR VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR SPECIAL RECOGNITION AWARDS CALL FOR NOMINATIONS In addition to the William C. Noyes Volunteer of the Year Award, a Junior Volunteer of the Year award and Staff Special Recognition award will be presented. The nomination forms for both awards are attached. All Museum staff members and volunteers are encouraged to submit nominations to be considered by the committee. The Committee consists of representatives from all areas of the Museum. -EveAnne Stouch & Susan O Donnell Office of Volunteer Services

For more information please contact Monique Foster, monique.foster@mysticseaport.org Rieta Park, rieta.park@mysticseaport.org NEWS FROM THE FINANCE DEPARTMENT After nearly 28 years of service, we are sorry to report that Sally Ackley will be moving to Florida. She and her husband will be joining family there and enjoying the warm Florida sunshine. Sally has worked in the Finance Department for four years and has become someone we truly rely on. Prior to that, she worked in the VRC and was a fixture there, running the department and making visitors feel at home. Her last day will be Friday, May 4 th. Best wishes in your new endeavors, Sally! -Isabella Zagare, Controller FIRST THURSDAY Our May 3 rd First Thursday is a presentation entitled: Old Florida - Through the Rosenfeld Lens. With the help of Carol Mowrey, Marilyn Leonard, and Julie Doering, John Urban of the Advancement Department put together a Rosenfeld slide presentation of Old Florida images - along with some images of Havana - that the Rosenfeld s shot during winter visits from the 1920s up to the early 1950s. This Old Florida presentation has been helpful in engaging friends of Mystic Seaport who live in, or have an interest in, Florida, and it serves as an example of the amazing depth of the Rosenfeld Collection. The photos capture vessels of the era, sailing and powerboat races of the time and coastal Florida scenes prior to modern development.

3 Carol Mowrey will join John to answer Rosenfeld questions following the presentation. PLEASE NOTE LOCATION: Please join us in the Olin Stephens Reading Room 3 rd Floor Stillman Building at 8:30 am for coffee and donuts followed by the presentation at 9am. A sign will be posted on the north side door where you should enter for the presentation. EveAnne Stouch and Susan O Donnell PIRATE DAYS A SUCCESS! Mystic Seaport hosted another successful Pirate Days on April 17 & 18, thanks to the Free Men of the Sea (pirate re-enactors), many volunteers, and staff. Two blustery days didn t keep the pirates away! 785 kids participated in Pirate Days activities over the course of the two days. The treasure hunt, complete with a compass and pacing, took participants to several buildings on campus where they received clues from hidden pirates. Three clues led treasurehunters to the Seaman s Friend Society, where they received their treasure/prize. This year s event also included a sword craft activity, Pirate Basic Training in the Discovery Barn, a Pirate Q&A with the Free Men of the Sea, a cannon firing drill on Chubbs Wharf, a special High Seas planetarium show, and performances of Arr You Ready to Be a Pirate by the Talemakers. Many thanks to our wonderful volunteers who manned registration, passed out and collected compasses, handed out coupons, conducted visitor surveys, and gave out final treasures. We truly appreciate your time and help in making the event run smoothly. We also extend a big thanks to Communications & Marketing, Event Network, Exhibits, Interpretation, Facilities, Photo Services, the Planetarium, Security, Visitor Services, Volunteer Services, and the Warehouse, among other individuals. Cheers! -The Pirate Days Team
