1 BULLETIN OCTOBER 12, 2018 PILOTS WEEKEND- October 13 th 14 th Please join me in welcoming the Mystic Seaport PILOTS to the Museum for their annual fall work weekend. There are many PILOTS who travel from afar to come for the weekend and they always appreciate the warm welcome they receive. A special thank you to all of our colleagues who put in extra time preparing for the weekend and leading PILOTS on their work projects! For many PILOTS this has become akin to a homecoming or reunion weekend and it is your enthusiasm and support that make it such a memorable experience. On behalf of the PILOTS I thank you. Chris Freeman FIRE DEPARTMENT DRILL THIS SUNDAY The Mystic Fire Department will be conducting a large scale mutual aid drill at Rossie Little League Field on Sunday, October 14. The drill will involve Fire departments and ambulance companies from throughout the area as well as the Stonington Police. Depending on conditions two Life Star helicopters may be part of the drill. They will land on the property north of Latitude 41. They will begin staging vehicles in our South parking lot around 7:30am. These vehicles will then be dispatched from the South lot to the Little League field between 8:00am and 9:00am. The drill should be completed by noon. Mark Dulin, Director Security/Risk Management NAUTICAL NIGHTMARES Join us for an evening of haunted thrills with Nautical Nightmares: Madness on the Mystic River, inspired by the works of H. P. Lovecraft. In this frightening theatrical, Mystic is falling into chaos! You ll join the alienists of Arkham to investigate a haunted whaleship and the madness that has descended through the town if your sanity can survive the night! Each performance of Nautical Nightmares is an approximately one hour tour that covers half a mile of uneven terrain including cobblestone, wood planking, grass, gravel, and stairs. Audience members walk or stand for the majority of the show. Because performances occur in all weather conditions, we strongly recommend the use of seasonal outerwear and appropriate shoes.

2 Performances of Nautical Nightmares require a special ticket in lieu of general admission. Elements of the show can be frightening and are not recommended for children younger than 12 years of age, or the faint of heart. Advance registration is required. Tour size is limited to 18 tickets Performance Dates October 12-13, 19-20, and Tours are hosted from 6-10 p.m. and leave every 15 minutes. Tickets Members: $21. Non-Members: $25 Youth Members: $16. Date: Thursday, October 18, 2018 Times: Afternoon begins at 1:30pm; Evening program begins at 7pm (Please note the new start time) Location: River Room, Latitude 41 Restaurant Jessica Ryals: Life as a Woman on the Water Senior Dynamic Positioning Operator, Jessica Ryals, has worked in waters all over the world throughout her 10 years in the offshore industry. Ryals graduated from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in 2008 and has circumnavigated the globe in various ships. She is currently stationed on an ultra-deepwater drillship in the Gulf of Mexico. Drillships can work in water depths of over 10,000 feet and rely on the skills of the dynamic positioning operator to keep the vessel steady against ever-changing wind and waves. 3 CANDY DONATIONS The Membership Department is collecting candy donations for our annual Trick or Treat event being held Wednesday, October 31, Your generous donations of treats help us keep this event free for all families to enjoy a safe and festive environment on this annual holiday. Please drop off your candy donations to the Membership Building 1st Floor Volunteer Office. Thank you! - Libby Daly NOTES FROM THE SUSTAINABILITY COMMITTEE HAPPY HALLOWEEN! Halloween is great fun for kids and adults alike, but it can be an environmental nightmare (and not just on Elm Street) with all the plastic candy wrappers, disposable costumes and decorations, and plastic bags for trickor-treaters to collect their goodies. As we are planning for Halloween with a thought for reducing plastic consumption, here are some ways to SAY NO TO PLASTIC! Choose candy with less plastic packaging to give out to trick-or-treaters o Candy in cardboard boxes, such as Dots, Nerds, Milk Duds, Junior Mints, Hot Tamales, Juicy Fruits, Whoppers, Sugar Babies, Goobers o Foil wrapped candy: gold coins, milk chocolate pumpkin balls, Toblerone, Cadbury Creme Eggs (just be sure the foil is actually foil, which is recyclable, and not a plastic-foil composite like a chip bag) o Some chocolate bars are still wrapped in foil and/or paper: Hershey, Endangered Species Chocolate, Tootsie Rolls, Rolos, Lifesavers, Now and Laters, Ditch the plastic pumpkin or bag in lieu of a paper or cloth bag for the kids to collect all their goodies! o Turn it into a craft project, and make a bag out of an old T-shirt o Purchase a Halloween themed cloth bag or paper gift bag o Use an orange pillowcase Get creative with the costumes! o Use old clothes o Visit a second hand store for previously worn costumes o Trade costumes with friends and family o Visit Pinterest if you re feeling crafty!.

4 THE 39 TH ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL MARINE ART EXHIBITION AND SALE AT THE MARITIME GALLERY AT MYSTIC SEAPORT MUSEUM The Maritime Gallery at Mystic Seaport Museum opened its 39th Annual International Marine Art Exhibition and Sale on Saturday, September 29 The International is the most comprehensive collection of contemporary marine art in the United States. Award-winning artists from around the world present more than 100 examples of their most recent work. Represented in this show are exceptional paintings, sculptures, and scrimshaw. The show is a commemoration of America s maritime heritage with both intricately researched historical scenes and contemporary images that document the relationship of man to the sea. Participating artists include Don Demers, Patrick O Brien, Richard Loud, Neal Hughes, Laura Cooper, Sergio Roffo, William Davis, and John Tayson. The exhibition honors participating artists with five awards of excellence and six named awards including the Rudolph J. Schaefer Maritime Heritage Award, which recognizes the work that best documents America s maritime heritage for future generations.
