Mallory Below is the obituary notice that the Mallory Family placed in The New York Times on April 26, Mystic Seaport is honored that the Memorial Gathering for Pauline Mallory will be held here in the River Room on Friday, May 31 at 12:30 p.m. Also, we are extremely grateful that the family has designated memorial gifts be made to Mystic Seaport, specifically to the Mallory Fellowship Endowment Fund. This is the fund that was established by late Trustee Wade Thompson in honor of Pauline and Clifford Mallory back in It is the international exchange program fund that several Museum staff have had the privilege to participate in, most recently Maribeth Bielinski and Krystal Rose went to the Azores, and Amanda Nicholas went to Scotland (see their stories featured in the new issue of the Mystic Seaport Magazine). MALLORY--Pauline Cropper, 92, died peacefully at home in Mystic, CT on April 17. She was born December 8, 1920 to Paul and Airini Carr Cropper in Auckland, New Zealand. On May 11, 1943, in Auckland, she married Clifford Day Mallory Jr., a US Navy Lieutenant. After WWII she and her husband moved to New York City where he launched his career in the shipping business, a family tradition for five generations. Pauline was an accomplished pianist, a student of distinction at The Royal Academy of Music in Piano Performance and a lifetime enthusiast of classical music. More importantly, she devoted her life to her family and many friends worldwide and will be remembered by all as a paragon of selflessness, grace, beauty, humor and kindness. Predeceased by her husband in 2000 and by two siblings, James Cropper and Errol Lovering, she is survived by a brother, John W. Cropper of Auckland and her three children, Diana Mallory Hawes of Pasadena, CA, Veronica Mallory Stubbs (Michael) of New York City and Charles Mallory (Georgette) of Greenwich, CT in addition to seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. A gathering in Pauline Mallory's Memory will be held May 31, 12:30pm at Mystic Seaport, Mystic, CT. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Mystic Seaport, P.O. Box 2000, Mystic, CT (Please designate gifts to the Mallory Fellowship Endowment Fund) Maureen Hennessey

4 Any questions, please feel free to call/ . Thank you. Caroleen Frey (ext. 5068) and Kathy Bremer (ext.5090) Shipyard Letter: April 19, 2013 Charles W. Morgan: Planking of the hull is nearly finished. Seven planks plus the shutter plank remain to be placed. The shutter plank will be installed May 10. The plastic shelter covering the hull will be removed in late May and the Morgan moved onto to the lift dock in early June. All is on track for launching July 21. Meanwhile a checklist of tasks is being undertaken in preparation for launch. The keel blocks, which were shifted to permit installation of copper sheathing, are being renewed. New oak blocks are being positioned under the keel at proper spacing. Each oak block assembly is capped with a soft wood crush pad to allow the keel to settle appropriately. As the caulking is being finished, the first coats of bottom paint will be applied. Work on caulking and paint requires constant reshuffling of the stanchions which support the hull. Work on assembling the gammon knee has commenced. The gammon knee, unlike the other knees which are one piece, is made up of several pieces and forms the foremost part of the bow above the stem and below the bowsprit. System design on the generators, pumps, heads, and navigation equipments continues. These systems will be placed in the Morgan while in the water tied up alongside the lift dock. The rig will be installed over the winter of When built, this was a relatively short and straightforward process. But because the Morgan now has a mix of old and new materials and has been out of the water drying out for four and a half years, the installation of the spars will be quite methodical. The lower masts will be placed and this will settle the vessel deeper into the water. Shipwrights will check for leaks and additional ballast will be placed in the hold to compensate for the weight of the spars. This process will be repeated as new parts of the masts and yards are added. As the individual spars are installed, the shape of Morgan's hull will shift necessitating a constant retuning of her rigging. In the spring of 2014 an incline experiment will be conducted on the Morgan to determine her center of gravity and righting arm. She is due to depart for New London's City Pier on Saturday, May 17, Elsewhere in the Yard: Liberty will be hauled shortly for Coast Guard certification. Necessity is in the paint shop and is getting new batteries. Lynx will be visiting Mystic Seaport in early May. A general cleanup of the yard is underway to remove materials not needed for the Morgan and to prepare for the WoodenBoat Show June Ted Mundy News from Facilities Happy New Year! Ok, Ok So it s the new Fiscal Year for the Museum. With the new fiscal year comes new forms, new procedures, and gentle reminders. Work Order Request Submissions: All requests for work at the Museum must be submitted on a work order form unless it is an emergency or an immediate condition that presents a danger to staff or visitors in which case a phone call to the Department at extension 5381 should be made during Facilities regular working hours. The Facilities Department work schedule is Monday through Friday from7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. If you are calling the office after hours please do not leave a message about an emergency or dangerous condition, but contact Security at ext and report your concern/need to them. Security will then evaluate the condition and determine if it needs immediate attention and if so will contact our on-call personnel. Many times you may see a Facilities Department staff person and relay a quick message to them about a repair or concern. We ask that you follow up your conversation with a written work order as many times that staff member is on their way to another repair or request and may possibly overlook what you may have just reported. This is in no way intentional and the written follow up makes sure this is not the case.

5 Work orders can be submitted by any staff member or volunteer. Any work order requests that are not a general/emergency repair need to go through your department director for approval. Forms for submission are available within your department, as well as in the Security Office and can be sent via in-house mail, , or left in the Security Office in the bin located on the wall behind the front door where they are picked up daily during Facilities working hours. When submitting a work order, please use the updated Work Order form and provide as much information as possible (location within the bldg., the trouble or repair needed, location the light may be burnt out, etc.). Most work orders are completed between the hours of 7-9 a.m. so staff may not be available to answer questions should there be vague information. Making this work request system available to all, we feel that repairs are expedited more effectively and produce faster results. As the Museum covers many acres and we in Facilities have many buildings and grounds to care for, the Facilities Department thanks you for your assistance in maintaining a safe and visually pleasant atmosphere. This Museum is truly a gemstone and without each staff member and volunteers assistance we would not be able to fully do our jobs. Recycling Program: Please help the Facilities Cleaning Department by not placing beverage containers in garbage containers that still may contain liquid. Many times the containers spill over in the garbage and create a messy situation. Also please separate your recyclable containers and paper items and place them in the proper recycling containers. This reduces the amount of general garbage and reduces costs. If your Department does not have a recycling container, please contact the Facilities office so we may provide one. Thank you and have a great season! I had kept my shoulder surgery pretty quiet, but some little bird passed on the news and on my first day of recovery, last Friday, I received a beautiful bouquet of flowers and good wishes from the staff and volunteers of Mystic Seaport. Those lovely flowers are certainly helping me to heal, and at moments such as this I appreciate being part of the Mystic Seaport "family." Geoff Kaufman

7 Housing Needed for Sea Music Festival Performers The Sea Music Festival will be held June 6-9. There will be a need for housing for the visiting performers. Anyone wishing to offer a room would be most welcome, and very much appreciated. All hosts will receive free tickets to the concerts. Please contact Geoff Kaufman if you are willing to help at or gkaufman@snet.net. Geoff Kaufman From the Office of Volunteer Services Junior Volunteer Registration: On Saturday, June 1, the annual registration day for all junior volunteers will be held from 9:30 a.m. until 12:20 p.m. Juniors and their parents are scheduled to meet below the Planetarium Building in the Campbell Room. It is mandatory that all junior volunteers, and at least one parent or guardian attend. Mystic Seaport membership is a requirement and can be purchased on that day. Juniors should contact the Office of Volunteer Services at or Rhoda Hopkins to confirm their attendance at this meeting. The juniors will receive schedules, badges, and shirts, and will have an opportunity to meet with their supervisors in the several areas in which they will work. Tom Brillat and Eric Ingmundson from the Interpretation Department, Brooks Saglio from Sailing, Al Burnett from the Boathouse, and Jeff Dunn from the Planetarium will be present to discuss the various aspects of the work ethic that will be enforced and the duties prevalent in each of their departments. Please help welcome these juniors who contribute so much help during the season, which is rapidly coming upon us. Urgent Request for Volunteer Hours: This is an urgent request from the Volunteer Office and is the next-to-last call for volunteer hours. It is absolutely imperative that all volunteers turn in their hours to the Office of Volunteer Services before May 10. Department supervisors should be sure that their volunteers have all posted their hours by the Tuesday, April 30, so that proper credit can be recorded. Reporting volunteer hours is necessary so that the Museum can secure proper credit for this great resource. So please, turn in all volunteer hours for proper recording and credit. Update for the Volunteer of the Year Award: So far, there are six nominations for the coveted William C. Noyes Volunteer of the Year Award. Last year, there were a total of 12, and that is the goal for this year. The Selection Committee is in place and awaits further nominations. With four weeks to go, nominations will close on Friday, May 24. Please look around and select your candidate for this prestigious award. Volunteers work very hard, are devoted to the Museum, and deserve every bit of your appreciation for the help they offer. Please send your nomination to the Volunteer Office on the form below. She has gained the respect of both staff and volunteers for her unique talent and for her dedication to her work. Last week, she fulfilled an assignment for the Education Department, accompanying Michele Fritzen on a mission to distribute educational material to schools. Karen makes herself readily available, for which the Volunteer Office is most appreciative. Many, many thanks to Karen. We are fortunate to have her here at Mystic Seaport. Rhoda Hopkins Root DYK? 1.
