As always, it will be a very memorable event with more than 40 volunteers ready to welcome the many visitors expected to attend. Last year there were nearly 2,500 singing visitors who donated almost 8,500 pounds of food to the Pawcatuck Neighborhood Center. The Staff in many departments have been most cooperative to make this event run as smoothly as ever. Mystic Seaport gates will open at 10 a.m. with volunteers stationed in the VRC, the Center Gate and the Administration Gate to collect food donations. Visitors will be admitted free of charge with a donation of a non-perishable food item. Volunteers will also be on hand to help trundle the food by wooden carts to the side room of the Galley where volunteers will be ready to pack boxes. The Planetarium will present the Star of Bethlehem program at 11 a.m., 1 and 2 p.m. The food concession for the sale of beverages, cookies and brownies, will open at 1:30 p.m. at the McGraw Quadrangle. At 1 p.m. the Mystic Seaport Carolers will stroll the grounds and begin to sing and at 2 p.m. they will present a concert in the Greenmanville Church. At 3 p.m. all exhibits will close and the Carol Sing will begin in Anchor Circle led once again by Choir Director Jamie Spillane. Volunteers will be stationed throughout the grounds to assist visitors and hand out songbooks. The Carol Sing will conclude at approximately 3:45 p.m. so that people may exit the grounds and Lantern Light Tours may begin at 5 p.m. We hope you will join us! -EveAnne Stouch & Susan O Donnell BJs WHOLESALE CLUB DISCOUNT All employees and volunteers are eligible for a discounted membership to BJ s Wholesale Club. Enrollment periods for current members will be held quarterly in March, June, September, and December. Enrolling will add 15 months to your membership regardless of when it expires. 3 REMEMBERING VIRGINIA R. COLBETH (Photo by Liz King) Virginia Ginny Colbeth, passed away on Wednesday, November 25, 2015 in Ridgewood, NJ. She volunteered at Mystic Seaport in The Boathouse beginning in July 1992 giving almost 3500 hours and earning Volunteer of the Week status in March of 2014 with a tribute by then Volunteer Services Coordinator, Rhoda Hopkins Root. Ginny s smile was unconditional. She was valued for her practical forthright take on life, her generosity, and her positive mentorship. She was fun and showed respect and interest in youth, corrupting their diets with Hershey kisses which she labeled Vitamins. She had a keen interest in local history, was a member of the Noank Baptist Church, shared her modest Groton Long Point home with friends each season, and kept in touch throughout the year. She was a patron of the arts and at ease in the city, yet she held to tradition and cherished old working ways, following the seasonal marine world, swimming each summer day, clamming, and putting out the docks just as her Father had taught many years before. Her image is imprinted on the minds of many as she sat aft on the 1917 Herreshoff launch, RESOLUTE, with each skipper, Granville, Don, Peter, Dick, Jim, Brian, and others, so easily teamed. She brought a unique experience for museum visitors from around the world interpreting the river scene as they headed downriver toward the Route 1 bascule bridge, evoking an earlier era, and under her animated spell. A retired teacher, Ginny didn t shy from telling a joke or critiquing an opera and never let a teachable moment pass, but it was rare that her subject realized as it was just second nature to nurture and explore and share. She was of great comfort to many who pass through The Boathouse doors and her memory will be fondly cherished by all her colleagues. Sharon Brown, Boathouse Volunteer
