1 September 4, 2015 Strategic Planning Process Underway The Museum s last strategic plan was endorsed in 2010 and updated a few times since then. Industry best practice is to revisit the plan every five years. The process we re embarking on now will not build a new strategic plan from scratch; rather, we will identify priorities and work to fully realize the potential of the work that is ongoing here each day. Teams of your colleagues and members of the Board of Trustees have begun to meet, working to set new goals for the Museum to increase revenue, to remain relevant, and to maximize the use of existing strengths. There are five teams with 6-7 additional staff members on each team: Team Name Collections & Exhibitions Education The Public Experience Resources Watercraft Team Leader and Board Liaisons Paul O Pecko, Richard Clary, Richard Vietor Sarah Cahill, Ray Strong, Michael Masin Susan Funk, Sheila McCurdy, Alex Bulazel Marcy Withington, Elisabeth Saxe, Sharon Cohen, Grant Cambridge Dana Hewson, Jim Giblin, Bob Rodgers The team leaders welcome input from staff and volunteers throughout this process. Progress will be shared at the all-staff meeting on October 6. Then, teams will work on a completed plan ready for board approval in January Steve White Duty Officers/Watch Captains/Shipyard

Please stop in

5 and meet Dave Lovalvo and Melissa Ryan, and see some incredible footage of deep-sea organisms! Website: engineeringfordiscovery.org Melissa Ryan Letter from a Happy Student I wanted to share this very thoughtful letter that came to me from a high school student from New York State who recently visited the Museum. It speaks perfectly to the many great experiences that are offered here. I recently visited your museum as part of a school project. I personally think you have set up your exhibits and activities in an excellent way. I really like how everything is hands on, and visitors can experience everything in a way that s interactive and engaging, and people who participate will learn a great deal more about boats and the mechanisms. Of course my favorite part of the Museum was the Planetarium, where different stars and constellations were shown. It was very interesting and I enjoyed the showing. The man in control of the showing was great as well. He was very friendly and made the audience laugh. I believe his name was Larry and he obviously knew about astronomy as well as being able to relate well with the audience. I know my family and I were pleased with our experience at Mystic [Seaport]. Keep up the great work! Steve White Volunteer Opportunities There are several volunteer opportunities coming up, and hopefully, one or more of these may be of interest. We would really appreciate your helping us out on the events that follow.
