1 SEPTEMBER 16, 2016 THOMPSON EXHIBITION STAFF & VOLUNTEER PREVIEW WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 21, 4 6:00 PM FINAL REMINDER Mystic Seaport Staff and Volunteers are invited to a wine and cheese preview reception celebrating the opening of the Thompson Exhibition Building. Staff members who plan to attend should or call Kristen Deveau (Kristen.deveau@mysticseaport.org ext 5346). The following is a list of other events that will be taking place in the Thompson exhibition building leading up to the Sea-Change exhibit opening in December September 21: Staff/Volunteer Preview September 23: Leadership Donor Thompson Building Dedication (invited event) September 24: Members/Public Thompson Building Opening Member Annual Meeting and Milestone Recognition Board of Trustee Meeting October 22: America and the Sea Award Gala (ticketed event) November 9: NEMA (New England Museum Association) Conference Welcome Party (ticketed event) December 9: Leadership Donor Preview of SeaChange Exhibition (invited event) December 10: Public Opening December TBD: Staff/Volunteer Preview CONGRATULATIONS PRESERVATION SHIPYARD! The Institute of Museum and Library Services has just announced its fall 2016 awards through the Museums for America Program. We are delighted to announce that Plimoth Plantation, in partnership with Mystic Seaport, has received a grant award of $149,245 toward the preservation of Mayflower II. The funding will help underwrite Preservation Shipyard labor as well as the purchase of a forklift for Mystic Seaport and an aerial boom lift for Plimoth Plantation. The Preservation Shipyard was in dire need of a new forklift to replace one of the two aging forklifts, both of which have been in service for many decades. This joint application was the direct result of a conversation with IMLS program officer Connie Bodner when she visited Mystic Seaport last summer. While touring the Shipyard, Connie encouraged Mystic Seaport to apply for a Collections Stewardship grant, and encouraged us to present the Shipyard as a conservation studio, and the forklift and aerial boom lift as essential tools for vessel conservation.
2 The Advancement Department WELCOME THREE NEW EDUCATORS TO THE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT The Education Department welcomes three new educators to our team: Ben Ellcome is the new Assistant Manager of Community Sailing. Ben has had many years of experience teaching sailing, both on the Great Lakes and in Newport, RI. He spent over eight years as a professional sailor on antique 12 meter sailboats, including Northern Light, and recently developed a boat-building program for youth through the Rhode Island Marine Trades Association. Ben also has eight years of experience implementing youth development programming through various organizations in Rhode Island, including the Boys and Girls Club. Ben started September 12 and is headquartered in the Youth Training Building. Ethan Closius is a new Anchor Watch Overnight Program Educator. Ethan has experience working in a residential camp setting for individuals with special needs, and in an afterschool program with Plymouth Parks and Recreation. Ethan has a B.S. in Social Studies Education and is from East Lyme. He will be working mostly weekends for the youth Anchor Watch program. Ethan joined us at the end of August. Joe Garzone is also a new Anchor Watch Overnight Program Educator. Joe has his B.A. in History and Social Science with a concentration in Secondary Education, and has been student and substitute teaching in a variety of schools. While in school Joe was also the Vice President of the History Club. He will be working with Ethan mostly weekends for the youth Anchor Watch program. Joe joined us at the end of August. Sarah Cahill FAREWELL TO SUSAN KIETZMAN It is with bittersweet emotions that the Advancement Department announces the departure of Susan Kietzman, our grant writer, who will be leaving Mystic Seaport at the end of this month to dedicate more time to her work as an author. Her last day in the office will be Thursday, September 29. Although we are sad to lose her as part of our team, we are overjoyed for her success in recently being offered a fifth book contract. (Her forth novel will be released in April 2017.) This extra time will allow her to fully focus on her craft, as well as to the all-important promotional side of her work. Susan arrived at the Museum in September 2010, and was originally hired on as a part-time, temporary member of our staff. She quickly earned our respect (and a permanent position) for her excellent writing and organizational skills, irreverent, quick-witted sense of humor, and feisty investigative reporter sensibilities. Susan was renowned for her grace under pressure and for her ability to keep people on task under deadline. Susan will be sorely missed! Chris Freeman, Claire Calabretta and the Advancement Department CHANGES TO THE WindRose As previously announced, the Museum will no longer print and mail the WindRose event and program guide that we produce three times a year. Instead, we have prepared a digital WindRose that directs people to relevant pages on the website. The change begins with the Fall/Winter issue. The
3 Museum will achieve substantial cost savings with this initiative and continue our transition to digital delivery where appropriate. Members were informed over the summer and we asked those who did not have an on record with us to supply one, which many did. If you encounter someone who did not receive the but would like to, please have them update their record by ing or calling the Membership Department at Marketing & Communications prepared a printable version in a format similar to the old WindRose which is available for download on the website at: Please direct people to that URL if they ask for a hard-copy version. Links are on the Main Membership, Member Programs, and the Museum Calendar pages on the website. FIRST THURSDAY A huge Thank You to Maureen Hennessey, Executive Assistant to the President & Board of Trustees and Paul O Pecko, Vice President for Collections & Research who teamed up to present an extremely entertaining and informative talk and slide show on the Evolution and Legacy at Mystic Seaport: The impact of leadership families. The presentation brought the Seaport s past to life and gave us an appreciation for three major contributors and their families who dedicated themselves to the development and growth of Mystic Seaport. Our October 6 th First Thursday will be a special insider look at how the new Thompson Exhibition Building works presented by Ken Wilson, Director of the Physical Plant of Mystic Seaport. All staff and volunteers welcome. Coffee, tea and donuts will be available on the Membership Patio from 8:20 am to 8:50 am when we will proceed to the Thompson Exhibition Building.
