1 SEPTEMBER 1, 2017 As we all watch the horrific images of Harvey s destruction and flooding, I am sure we all are wishing the best for those who have faced the brunt of the storm and that the devastation will end soon so that the process of recovery can begin. We are reaching out to several organizations in the maritime heritage community in the Gulf coast area to see If Mystic Seaport can be of any assistance. The Texas Maritime Museum in Rockport, the Galveston Historical Foundation, and the Texas Seaport Museum are all located in the path of the storm. Reports from the Texas Seaport Museum indicate that their 1887 barque Elissa successfully weathered the storm. Kurt Voss, who was our operations manager for the Morgan s 38 th Voyage and has longtime ties to the museum, forwarded this comment from Mark Scibinico, the ship s port captain: "Elissa is up and afloat and in great shape. Hurricane prep did more than its job and Galveston got little of the surrounding impact. Wish us well as we reset for the future The Seaport Museum s building was not so fortunate and lost part of its roof, but apparently the artifacts inside appear to be undamaged. We will keep you updated on what we learn from these and other organizations in the region. Mystic Seaport stands by to help in whatever way we can and we will share with you any opportunities for you to help on your own. Steve White

Thank you to all the many departments and volunteers who helped to facilitate the second season of Arts on the Quad. We had a terrific season of theatre and music - everything from bluegrass, to folk, rock, and Shakespeare. Events like Arts on the Quad help us attract new audiences to our spectacular campus and share with them the enjoyment of an outdoor performance in a beautiful setting. Surveys conducted at every show will allow us to gauge those audiences interests and tailor our offerings to our visitors needs. We would like to thank the many volunteers and our duty officers who devoted their evenings to this series. We would also like to thank Communications & Marketing, Exhibits, Facilities, Finance, Photo Services, Security, Shipping, Visitor Services, Volunteer Services, and Coastal Gourmet, among other individuals. Here s to the end of a great summer! -Arlene Marcionette & Susan Funk SEPTEMBER IS MEMBER APPRECIATION MONTH We are dedicating the entire month to say thank you to our community of Mystic Seaport Members. 3 The Greater Mystic Chamber of Commerce is holding a drawing to win the commemorative painting Time Passages by Mystic artist Susan Noyes. The acrylic painting features the Charles W. Morgan passing through the bascule bridge downtown at the beginning of the 38th Voyage. Tickets are $25 each and the drawing will be held on September 12, If you are interested in purchasing a ticket, please contact Dan McFadden x5317 Proceeds of the drawing will benefit the Greater Mystic Chamber of Commerce. EXPO, AUGUST 19 TH & 20 TH Exhibit of Evinrude outboards, inboards and Evinrude Boat No Our 26 th Annual Expo featured a special exhibit of Evinrude engines, and Evinrude Boat No. 3308, from the Seaport s Watercraft Collection. This is one of only six Evinrude boats known to exist today. Dennis

4 Evinrude, Ole Evinrude s great-nephew, remarked in a letter to the Seaport: My Great Uncle Ole would be delighted to see a boat with his name on it in such great, original condition I congratulate the effort of Mystic Seaport to recognize Evinrude boats at your Antique Engine Show. And of course, our poster engine for this year was an Evinrude - a 1913 Detachable Rowboat Motor, Model B, one-cylinder, 2HP, exhibited by Mr. Robert Toffey, of Watertown, CT. In all, we had over fifty Evinrude engines, four of which were inboards. (Evinrude made inboards from 1916 to 1924.) Once again, the Staff and volunteers teamed up to prepare the Shipyard, set up the steam table, erect tents, and prepare the pool for the RC model boats. Then on Sunday afternoon, more devoted volunteers came in to disassemble what the Friday crew had assembled. Thank you all. And thanks, as well, go to volunteer Ed Hill, for his extensive work on the Evinrude display, and to Philip Tankard for his assistance. The 2018 show is planned for August 18 th and 19 th. See you there! -Scott Noseworthy ECLIPSE DAY - THANK YOU!!! On Monday, August 21st, we hosted a HUGE crowd of visitors who came by to witness the Partial Solar Eclipse! While I was personally initially overwhelmed by the unexpectedly-high turnout, we put together a fantastic event for all in attendance. The feedback that I received was extremely favorable, and the day would have not been possible if not for the help of so many Seaport colleagues. I'd like to take this moment to thank as many of you as I can recall... Thank you to my Treworgy Planetarium team - Jordan Ecker, Bill Michael, and our Junior Volunteer Zach Adamson - for lending their expertise and Astronomy knowledge to our visitors. Thank you to my friends in the Education Department - Sarah Cahill, Mary Koehler, Krystal Rose, Nancy Hughes, Ben Ellcome, and Andrea Kaplan - for keeping our guests engaged, for passing out eclipse

5 glasses, for commandeering the Masin Room to accommodate our live-stream overflow, and for helping visitors have fun with colanders! Thank you to Elissa Bass for single-handedly manning our solar-filter telescope out on the Playscape for hours! Thank you to Dan Harvison for filming all of the fun! And thank you to all of my Mystic Seaport colleagues who stopped by to interact with our visitors - those of you that I spotted (Dean Hantzopoulos, Amanda Keenan, Alan Schaeffer, Rachel Thomas- Shapiro, Denise Kegler, Nicholas Bell) - and anyone else who I didn't spot! This was a classic case of what makes Mystic Seaport such a wonderful place at which to work! The combined efforts of so many people made for an unforgettable experience for hundreds upon hundreds of eclipse visitors. Thank you all so very much! - Brian Koehler, Planetarium Supervisor FIRST THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 7 How World War I Saved the Charles W. Morgan Interpreter, Catherine Deichmann, will be our First Thursday speaker on September 7. The following is a brief summary of her topic: How World War I saved the Charles W. Morgan. In the autumn of 1913, the Charles W. Morgan, withdrawn from the whaling fleet, was laid up at Lewis Wharf in Fairhaven, Massachusetts, stripped of everything of value, padlocked, and abandoned. After seventy-two years, Fairhaven might well have been the final port in her long and successful story, but events an ocean away intervened. The outbreak of war in Europe drove the prices for whale oil to record highs. Sensing a profit to be made, Captain Benjamin Cleveland, a veteran whaler and sealer, purchased the Morgan in the spring of In September she left on her 34 th voyage, to the harsh vastness of the southern Indian Ocean. The dangers to an unarmed ship sailing during wartime were multiplied in the spring of 1917, when the United Stated joined the conflict. In spite of the hazards of weather and war, Captain Cleveland returned safely to New Bedford in October, Given a new life, the Morgan went on to an additional three voyages before retiring again in The Morgan s 20 th century voyages have often been overlooked as the last remnants of a dying trade, but they had their own share of excitements. The voyage that saved the Morgan from decay and destruction featured mutiny, sea elephants, a fatal accident, with a few mysterious crew members and global maritime warfare thrown in for good measure! The presentation will take place in the Campbell Class Room. Coffee and donuts will be served at 8:30 am followed by the presentation at 9:00 am.
