1 BULLETIN DECEMBER 7, 2018 DEATH IN THE ICE: THE MYSTERY OF THE FRANKLIN EXPEDITION OPENING WEEKEND Photo credit - group photo above Parks Canada It was a truly memorable weekend here at Mystic Seaport Museum, as the exhibition that we have been planning for more than a year finally opened! We celebrated Death in the Ice: The Mystery of the Franklin Expedition with perfect weather for donor events, a Member preview, a public opening ceremony and an underwater archaeology talk by Marc-

2 André Bernier. The public opening included a welcome ceremony by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and The Mohegan Tribe, remarks from Canadian Museum of History, Parks Canada, Inuit Heritage Trust, the Government of Nunavut, Hamlet of Gjoa Haven, and the Consul General of Canada in New York. We are honored to be the first U.S. venue to host this exhibition, which tells the tragic story of Arctic exploration and death and one of the most enduring mysteries of maritime history. An enormous thank you to all who made this exhibition and these events possible. It is an honor to have the privilege of working with such passionate, dedicated, and competent individuals. (Fun prizes for those who crack the code!) Take a Franklinerd exhibition tour, indulge in some poutine (Canada's unofficial national dish), and enjoy music by DJ Lion King. Haven t bought your holiday cards yet? Stop by the Victorian holiday card-making station and print some with an historic hand printing press! Test out your arctic geography knowledge, and don t forget to visit the selfie station and accessorize, Victorian-style. December 7 starting at 7pm in the Thompson Exhibition Building Pre-sale: $20 (buy before noon on December 7 to get this price) Day-of: $25 Staff and Volunteers: $15 Order online or call This is a 21+ event. Admission includes one drink ticket for beer or wine. A cash bar will be available. TOYS FOR TOTS Mystic Seaport will be collecting toys for Toys for Tots this holiday season. Toys can be dropped off at the Visitor Reception Center or at Human Resources. Please note that all toys must be new in their original packaging and unwrapped. Toys for Tots does not accept any realistic looking toy weapons or any food items. Staff members who drop off a toy will be entered into a raffle for a day off with pay! 3 AN AED for the CRC Bystanders knowing CPR, when someone is having a heart attack, can be the difference between life and death. Also having an AED or Automated External Defibrillator readily available, significantly increases a heart attack victim s chances of survival. We now have an AED located in the Collections Research Center, our first location on the east side of RT 27. Special thanks to Volunteer, Tom Mirsky, for building a beautiful box to house this AED which is now located in the lobby of the CRC. Just being able to retrieve the AED and bring it back to the first responders, can be a huge help, so please take a few moments out of your day to familiarize yourself with their locations. The other AED s locations are in the Thompson Exhibition Building and the Sanger Visitor reception Center, the Shipyard, the Noyes Boat House, the Mystic Seaport Sailing Center and the Security office. For anyone interested in taking a CPR/AED training class, we hope to have one open to all staff and volunteers in early January. NEW SHOW AT THE TREWORGY PLANETARIUM The Treworgy Planetarium is pleased to announce our new public show, to connect with Death in the Ice, the exciting new exhibition here at the Mystic Seaport Museum. Our show is called, Polar Night, Arctic Light and it will be our 3:00 PM daily public show starting on Thursday, November 29. This show will transport visitors from Mystic, Connecticut to King William Island in Canada, where most of the Franklinrelated discoveries have been made. The general premise of the program is that, knowing the fate of Franklin and his crew, it would be very easy for us to label this part of the world a barren, impassable wasteland. However, the truth is that over 1,200 people call King William Island their home, and the manner in which they live their lives amidst an unforgiving climate is fascinating, and merits exploration. Polar Night is a scientific term for a period of time when the sun fails to rise above the horizon in the polar regions of Earth. Due to the tilt of the Earth s axis, the sun will not rise once over King William Island between December 4, 2018 and January 7, 2019! We balance out our show title with Arctic Light, which is a reference to the stars that are visible in the sky during this time of year. Inuit lore contains captivating stories with complex characters, and the constellations seen by this culture can provide a fresh take on a somewhat-familiar sky. Visitors used to seeing a Great Bear or a bull or an ancient queen in the sky will be surprised to see that these same stars form the shapes of a caribou, a polar bear hunting scene, a leather pouch containing blubber, and an oil lamp stand. We hope that our new show will inspire visitors to see connections all across the campus of the Mystic Seaport Museum from the Collins Gallery to the Charles W. Morgan to the 19th century village and all the way out to the shipyard! There are diverse maritime themes throughout the Inuit star stories we will share, and we hope that visitors to Death in the Ice will find our newest public show to be a fun and educational connection to this extraordinary exhibit! Just a reminder that Planetarium shows are FREE to staff and volunteers. So please drop in and see us! And if you are free around 3:00 PM on any day that we are open to the public, please come by to see our newest public show Polar Night, Arctic Light. -Brian Koehler DINING AT LATITUDE 41 & LATITUDE 41 TO GO! All seaport employee/ volunteers who dine in latitude 41 for lunch are afforded a 20% discount. Latitude 41 has developed the attached togo menu: all orders must be called in to latitude 41 (860) beginning at 11am Thursday thru Sunday or faxed to latitude 41 (860) between the hrs of 11am and 1pm for pick-up that day.. Orders will be available beginning at 11:45pm for pick-up. All togo orders are afforded the seaport member /employee 10% discount. Blunt White Library will open the CRC East Hall to Staff and Volunteers to purchase used books which have been donated to us.

6 Dates are as follows: Tuesday, December 11 Thursday, December 13 Wednesday, December 19 Each day we will be open from 8 to 9 am and from 11:30 am to 1 pm. Books will cost $ 2 each. Cash, check and plastic will be accepted (Cash or check preferred). All sales benefit the library. There are some amazing deals here, including a large selection of books on woodworking, boat and model building, fiction, whaling and maritime history. Entrance to the sale will be the eastern door to the CRC on Velvet Lane. A 'BOOKSALE' sign on the door will be present. Fellows of the G.W. Blunt White Library TIAA MEETINGS FOR EMPLOYEES- MONDAY DECEMBER 10 9 AM Representatives from TIAA will be on site on Monday December 10, There will be a group meetings at 9 AM in the Olin C. Stephens Reading Room 3rd Floor of Stillman. Individual meetings will follow. If you are just starting out or you are approaching retirement, this is an opportunity for you to enhance your understanding of retirement planning and how it impacts you. Have a great holiday! Susan O Donnell SEAPORT STORE ROOF REPLACEMENT Beginning next week we will be replacing large sections of the Seaport Store roof. Roofing materials and dumpsters will be delivered starting on Monday and be staged around the building. Parking around the building will not be available and parking in the Bake Shop lot will be disrupted while the work is in progress. Please be cautious when entering or exiting the building during this period. Assuming the weather cooperates work should be completed within a week.
