STAFF COOKOUT WEDNESDAY, JUNE 20, :30 6:30 All Staff are invited to a cookout hosted by the Management Team. Hotdogs, hamburgers and veggie burgers will be available along with beverages. Staff are asked to bring a side dish or dessert. Staff are invited to get out on the water at this time! Cookout starts at 4:30 pm in the Mystic Seaport Sailing Center, rain or shine! Sign up sheets are in your department. This year we are making an effort to minimize the use of single use plastics. Coastal Gourmet is donating items for us to use. Beer and soft drinks will be provided in bottles and cans. Anyone who would like water or wine are asked to bring their own glass to cut back on the use of plastic cups. WELCOME DEB BIGELOW! Deb Bigelow will be joining Human Resources on Friday June 15 th as the new Part-time Human Resources Specialist. Deb has worked for a number of years in Human Resources in the areas of administration, benefits, recruiting, payroll and onboarding. Deb comes to Mystic Seaport Museum from the commercial construction world. Deb has also worked in marketing roles in the technology sector as well as for startup companies. Deb lives in Stonington and is a dog lover! We are delighted to welcome her to Mystic Seaport Museum. If you are in the vicinity of HR, please take a moment to stop by and welcome Deb to the Museum. BOOK SALE JUNE 23 The Fellows of the G.W. Blunt White Library will be holding their annual book sale at Mystic Seaport on Saturday, June 23, 2018 from 9:00 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. A great selection of over 1,000 books will be available at great prices. The sale will be held on the loading dock of the Rossie Mill, adjacent to the Museum s North Parking Lot, across from Latitude 41.

2 THE PLEIN AIR PAINTERS OF THE MARITIME GALLERY AT MYSTIC SEAPORT For the 22nd year in a row, the Maritime Gallery artists will congregate at the Maritime Gallery at Mystic Seaport to paint on the Museum grounds and environs. Following the tradition of the plein air painters of the 19 th and early 20 th centuries, artists can be found at their French easels capturing the shifting light along the Mystic River and also nearby at coastal marshes and beaches. Watch your favorite artists paint en plein air beginning next Tuesday, June 12 and continuing through Saturday, June 16 th. The exhibition continues through September 23. Appreciated MAPS CONFERENCE Last week, from May 31 - June 2, the Mystic Seaport Museum and the Treworgy Planetarium served as the host of the 2018 Conference of the Middle Atlantic Planetarium Society (MAPS). This gathering welcomed over 60 planetarians from all up and down the East Coast, from Maine to Georgia (we have very generous boundaries when it comes to "Middle Atlantic"). The theme of this year's conference was "Full STEAM Ahead!", a celebration of the ways that we all incorporate science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics into our programming - plus a nautical connotation that was too perfect to pass up! While here, the MAPS group conducted their usual conference activities (workshops, lesson sharing, and vendor demonstrations) while also enjoying this most unique setting for a planetarium conference. As a MAPS member myself, I truly value the opportunity to meet and network with professionals in the field, sharing ideas and helping each other to confront the issues we face under our domes every day. Everyone who attended was raving about their experience at the Mystic Seaport Museum, and we have been hearing from numerous MAPS members that this was "the best conference in years"!

3 I would like to thank my Museum colleagues in various departments for their assistance in delivering this stellar conference. Members of the Interpretation department, Security team, Facilities department, Visitor Services team, Membership building staff, and Coastal Gourmet all played a role in making our visitors feel welcomed here. I would also like to thank my incredible team of staff and volunteers here at the Treworgy Planetarium: Larry Krozel, Bruce Levine, R.M. Maxwell, Bill Michael, Jordan Ecker, J.P. Chaffiotte, Zach Adamson, and Carl Heinrich. Planning this conference was a monumental task for a department of our size, but with the true embodiment of a team effort, this event was executed to perfection! TREWORGY PLANETARIUM WELCOMES NEW STAFF It is my pleasure to formally introduce two new Planetarium Presenters who have recently joined the team here at the Treworgy Planetarium. Jon-Paul (J.P.) Chaffiotte started here back in the winter, and comes to the Museum after having earned a bachelor's degree in Planetary Science from UMASS Amherst in J.P. has educational experience as both a substitute teacher, and also an instructor for a company called Play-Well TEKnologies. Play-Well delivers STEM activities into classrooms, and the Mystic Seaport Museum's Summer Day Camp is partnering with Play- Well this summer on several STEM-related weeks of camp. So J.P. will be spending a few weeks this summer working as the Play-Well liaison to our Summer Day Camp, but he'll also be under the dome giving shows at the Planetarium several days each week. Zach Adamson is the most recent member of our staff, having officially joined us in early May. If Zach's name sounds familiar, it's because he has been a Junior Volunteer (summers 2015 and 2016) followed by a yearround Volunteer (2017). After completing his first semester as a student in the Engineering Program at the University of Connecticut, we are pleased to welcome Zach as an official regular part-time staff member. Zach will also be delivering shows for a few days each week this summer. Just a reminder that Planetarium shows are free to attend for Mystic Seaport Museum Staff, Volunteers, and their immediate families. So please stop by this summer to say "hi" to J.P., Zach, or any of our other fantastic presenters! - Brian Koehler

4 PARKING DURING THE WOODENBOAT SHOW Once again we are fortunate to have the WoodenBoat Show here at Mystic Seaport June If all goes as planned, and the weather cooperates, we expect to fill the North and South parking lots to capacity during the three days of the Show. Because of the need to accommodate a considerable number of vendors, as well as the increase in visitation during this event, we ask that staff and volunteers refrain from parking in the North and South parking lots during the Show. Please make use of parking in the Administration and Labaree lots, as well as the parking at 90 Greenmanville Ave.( HR office). The alternate parking previously mentioned will not accommodate all of our staff and volunteers working during the WoodenBoat Show. We need everyone s help to make the show a success and ask all to use imaginative ways to avoid parking in our main lots. Carpool, bicycle, kayak, walk, or park at a friend s, every space available to our guests is to our advantage in having a successful show. There is no parking allowed on the adjacent side streets. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated and is crucial to making this event a success. - Mark Dulin SPECIAL PRESENTATION: SAILING THE NORTHWEST PASSAGE JUNE 19 th at 1:30 PM in the Masin Room Staff, Volunteers, and Members are FREE Join us this Tuesday for a special presentation by Ginger Niemann. She and her husband Peter have been sailing the world since In 2016, they embarked on a northern adventure sailing through the Northwest Passage on their 50 foot Herreshoff ketch Irene. They will be docking at Mystic Seaport Museum for a few days and we are excited to hear their story. MEMBER TRIP TO STONE ACRE FARMS There are still spots available on the Member Trip to Stone Acres Farm for a tour and tasting. Our group will be guided through the farm s rolling hills, ornamental gardens, and acres of vegetable production. The tour will conclude with a cooking demonstration and light tasting.
