JUNE 23, 2017 THE PLEIN AIR PAINTERS of the MARITIME GALLERY at MYSTIC SEAPORT For the 21st year in a row, the Maritime Gallery artists will congregate at the Maritime Gallery at Mystic Seaport to paint on the Museum grounds and environs. Following the tradition of the plein air painters of the 19 th and early 20 th centuries, artists can be found at their French easels capturing the shifting light along the Mystic River and also nearby at coastal marshes and beaches. Watch your favorite artists paint en plein air beginning Tuesday, June 20 and continuing through Saturday, June 24 th. The exhibition continues through September 17. Public Opening Reception Saturday, June 24, 2016, 5:30-7:30 p.m. R.S.V.P. Appreciated PARKING DURING THE WOODENBOAT SHOW Once again we are fortunate to have the WoodenBoat Show here at Mystic Seaport June 30 July 2. If all goes as planned, and the weather cooperates, we expect to fill the North and South parking lots to capacity during the three days of the Show. Because of the need to accommodate a considerable number of vendors, as well as the increase in visitation during this event, we ask that staff and volunteers refrain from parking in the North and South parking lots during the Show. Please make use of parking in the Administration and Labaree lots, as well as the parking at 90 Greenmanville Ave.( HR office). The alternate parking previously mentioned will not accommodate all of our staff and volunteers working during the WoodenBoat Show. We need everyone s help to make the show a success and ask all to use imaginative ways to avoid parking in our main lots. Carpool, bicycle, kayak, walk, or park at a friend s, every space available to our guests is to our advantage in having a successful show. There is no parking allowed on the adjacent side streets. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated and is crucial to making this event a success. Mark Dulin

RHODA HOPKINS ROOT With sadness, we share the news that Rhoda Hopkins Root passed away June 18th. Rhoda was a remarkable, talented and graceful woman and beloved by the many staff and volunteers she worked with over her 14 year tenure at Mystic Seaport. She retired in May 2014 as Associate Director of Volunteer Services. Please take a moment to remember Rhoda. Thank you. For more information about Rhoda and her obituary, please click link below. JIM CONLIN MEMORIAL It was a beautiful morning last Friday when friends and family of Jim Conlin gathered at the Mystic Seaport Sailing Center to dedicate a Dyer Dhow in honor of Jim. Thanks again to everyone who donated towards the newest addition to Mystic Seaport s sailing fleet. Special thanks to Diane Alley for organizing the event and christening the Jim Conlin!

A SUCCESSFUL NATURALIZATION CEREMONY Last Wednesday, Mystic Seaport hosted a Naturalization Ceremony in conjunction with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services for the sixth consecutive year. The weather cooperated beautifully and 74 people from all over the world became U.S. citizens; it was a moving and emotional experience for all. 33 countries were represented at the ceremony and there was a pin board for candidates to place a pin on the country in which they were born. People smiled as they pinned and reflected on their home countries before becoming an official citizen of the United States. The ceremony was orchestrated by representatives from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services with the Honorable Judge Robert A. Richardson presiding. In attendance were Stonington First Selectman Rob Simmons, as well as representatives from the offices of Senator Chris Murphy, Senator Richard Blumenthal, and Representative Joe Courtney. Thank you to the many departments involved with the event, and to the volunteers who were integral in creating a smooth and welcoming event. It was surely a memorable experience for all the new citizens and their families and friends. -Arlene Marcionette and Sarah Noel Rodriguez MYSTIC SEAPORT WELCOMES SCRIPPS SUMMER INTERNS Laura Asson recently completed her MA in history at the University of Connecticut at Storrs with a focus on material culture, public history, and Revolutionary War memory. Her research has focused on the role of music and dance in early American history, especially during the Revolutionary War. Laura has worked as an intern at Minute Man National Historical Park and completed a fellowship at the Newport Historical Society last summer. Her interests outside of historical research include horseback riding,

mountain hiking, and playing Celtic fiddle music. Laura is conducting research in the Curatorial Department with Nicholas Bell this summer. Elizabeth DiPippo joins us from New York where she is a graduate student in Museum Administration at St. John s University. She comes to us with an academic background in anthropology with a focus in archaeology. She has volunteered and interned at a number of cultural institutions including the Hudson River Museum, Westchester County Historical Society, and the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. Elizabeth is working with Elysa Engelman, and her Scripps Intern Project includes audience evaluation, assessing receptivity to upcoming exhibits and programs in addition to providing Mystic Seaport an overall understanding of our visitors current needs and wishes. If you happen to see Elizabeth on the grounds between interviews, stop by and say hi! Sarah Noel Rodriguez is from Plainview, Texas. She studied Anthropology and Italian at the University of Oklahoma and received her M.A. in Museum Studies from Marist College in Florence, Italy. Recently, Sarah worked at Pitti Palace, Strozzi Palace, and the Museum of Natural History as a curatorial intern. She is most interested in decolonizing museums and implementing diversity in museum programs and events. Outside of work, her hobbies include watching soccer, visiting museums, watching films, and practicing yoga. Sarah Noel is working with Susan Funk and Arlene Marcionette in Public Programs. BLACK & WHITE PARTY Last Friday, Mystic Seaport celebrated summer and the McGraw Quad with the Black & White Party in the Thompson Exhibition Building. Although the rain kept us mostly inside, the event was a success. The guests looked dazzling in their black and white attire, and jazz by GLP Spa Band set the stage for a relaxed evening that gave people a fun reason to dress up and enjoy Mystic Seaport after hours. The activities were well-received, especially the scrimshaw table; there was always a group of people there creating their own little piece of art. SeaChange experts Claudia Covert, Fred Calabretta, and Randy Wilkinson provided talks in Collins Gallery and drew in a crowd eager to learn more about the exhibition. Mystic Museum of Art s Tom Frohnapfel brought figure drawing to the party, giving guests an opportunity to sketch a model. The silhouette activity was simple and fun for all; we saw many guests happily taking their silhouettes with them after being drawn. Hannah Thomas gave a brilliant performance in Mallory, combining speeches from different Suffragettes during the fight for the right to vote. Guests were able to try on costume pieces in the On Land and On Sea exhibit and take their own photos. Nikki McClure s Life in Balance exhibition inspired a papercutting activity where guests had a

chance to create a design of their own. The winner of the best Black & White outfit contest was Krisann Freilino; for her stylish look, she received a gift bag of Mystic Seaport items. Check out photos from the event here: A big thank you to the many departments whose contributions made the event a success and to all the volunteers and staff who worked hard throughout the evening (and in the rain)! We are grateful for your dedication and participation in the event! -Arlene Marcionette and Sarah Noel Rodriguez SPECIAL PRESENTATION FREE TO STAFF, VOLUNTEERS, AND MEMBERS Jonathan White: Tides The Science and Spirit of the Ocean Friday, June 30, :00 p.m. - Masin Room Jonathan White, author, boat builder, sailor, and surfer, will be presenting his amazing adventures and findings for his book, Tides The Science and Spirit of the Ocean on Friday, June 30, 2017 in the Masin Room at 6:00 p.m. Some adventure highlights include hunting for mussels with an Inuit elder in the Arctic and witnessing the Silver Dragon, the world s largest daily tidal bore a twenty-five foot wave that rushes up the Qiantang River in China.
