October 11, 2012 Welcome, PILOTS! Saturday and Sunday, October This Saturday, October 13, the PILOT Corps will arrive on campus for their annual fall weekend. We are expecting 114 PILOTS from around the country to come to the Museum for a weekend of work projects and good fellowship. One of the principle attractions of the weekend is the opportunity it provides for our PILOT members to meet colleagues from all around the Museum. If you happen to encounter our PILOTS on Saturday, please give them a hearty welcome and thank you for all that they do to support Mystic Seaport. Projects will be taking place throughout the grounds. Thank you in advance for your patience and support. Chris Freeman Photo of the Week

New Director of Interpretation It is with pleasure that I announce that Tom Brillat has accepted the position of Director of Interpretation, effective October 29, Tom has worked in the Interpretation Department for over three years using his exceptional storytelling skill in exhibit interpretation and the development of his charismatic roleplay character, Captain Thomas Gideon Nelson. He is distinguished by his first-hand experience working with the public and in the contemporary maritime world, as well as his commitment to historical accuracy, creative presentation style and engaging programs. Tom s maritime and leadership background is strong and varied. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy with a history degree, earned an M.A. in Marine Affairs from the University of Rhode Island, teacher certification from Providence College, and a Non Profit Management Certificate from Columbia University. Tom s professional career includes serving as Executive Director of the Tall Ship Bounty Foundation, President of Educational Exchange in Wakefield, RI, and Executive Director of the League for the Advancement of New England Storytelling. Congratulations, Tom! Susan Funk Communications Task Force Update The Communications Task Force met Wednesday, October 10. The team reviewed the draft staff communications survey created by the Survey Sub Team. Homework for the entire team was to review the survey to see if the questions are on target and actually take the survey to see how each member interprets each question. We also commenced a brainstorming of internal communications methods and how to communicate with management more affectively. We hope to complete the latter next week and will be able to share more. Mary Anne Stets and Alexandra Alpert Senate Hopeful Stops by for Chowder Days
This past Monday U.S. Senate candidate Linda McMahon stopped by for a visit to the Museum. She had a last-minute cancellation in the morning and took us up on an invitation for a tour of the grounds and the Charles W. Morgan. Steve White escorted her and started with an in-depth tour of the Morgan including a trip up the scaffolding to view the planking work and she purchased and signed a trunnel (as shown above) on behalf of the McMahon family. She then sampled Coastal Gourmet s chowder (proclaimed very good ), paused to sing along with Don Sineti in the gazebo, and checked out the village with a stop in the Cooperage, which she was curious about after learning about the importance of barrels on the Morgan. Mrs. McMahon s prior experience with Mystic Seaport was taking her kids here years ago, so the visit was an opportunity to show her all of the different things we do today, and by all appearances she was impressed. Rep. Chris Murphy was scheduled to visit on October 15, although his campaign just notified us he has to cancel on that day. We are hoping he will be able to stop by before the election. Dan McFadden Mystic Seaport is Making the Grade on NBC Connecticut NBC Connecticut is expected to run a story on the Museum s Adventures in Research program this evening. Morning anchor Brad Drazen followed a group from the Charles Morgan School in Clinton (no, not the same Charles Morgan) when they did the program a couple of weeks ago. It is part of their Making the Grade franchise of education coverage.
It is slotted to air around 6:15 p.m. tonight (barring breaking news), again at 4:55 a.m. tomorrow morning for you early risers, and it is presently available online. Thanks to all who participated in the story. You might recognize teacher Mike Graham as he is the 2012 Orion Award winner. Dan McFadden Sights & Frights Dress Rehearsal Wednesday, October 17, 6:30 p.m. All staff and volunteers are invited to join us for this fun event. Gather at the VRC by 6:15 p.m. We will divide participants into three groups and all will leave promptly at 6:30 p.m. Hear three creepy stories, tour The Haunted Schooner, visit the Mysterious Mystic Press and the Scary Apothecary and see "Whoo's in the Night Sky" in the planetarium. Plan on about one and one half hours of entertainment. Sign-up sheets will be posted in Brustolon or you may leave a message at ext for Tom Brilllat or Nancy Hughes. Note: All volunteers participating in Sights & Frights are encouraged to attend dress rehearsal so as to be well informed about the choices our visitors can make. Cooperage and SFS story helpers may want to meet their storyteller, hear the first story, then join the group for the rest of the tour. We will take a few minutes after the planetarium show to go over a few logistics with you. Hope to see you there! Nancy Hughes Lift a Pint of Pumpkin at the Shipyard Tavern! Tonight from 5:30-8 p.m. Celebrate the release of Shipyard Brewery s new Pumpkinhead and Smashed Pumpkin Ales, found exclusively at the Shipyard Tavern at Latitude 41⁰ Restaurant. 6 Michela Musolino and Vincenzo Castellana will perform Sempri ammari: Traditional Sicilian Songs to the Sea Friday, October 12, from 7:30-9:30 p.m. at the Greenmanville Church. The rich musical tradition of Sicily includes many songs that speak of the sea, sing its praises or are sung by those whose work connects them to the water. Musicians Michela Musolino and Vincenzo Castellana join together to pay tribute to Sicily s sea. Musolino, a vocalist known for her performances of Sicilian Roots Music, and Castellana, a noted percussionist of the Sicilian drumming tradition, have created a work of song, percussion and recitations which illustrates the intimate connection of Sicily, her history and her culture to the sea which surrounds it. Tickets are $20 for adults (member adult: $15) and $15 for youth (member youth: $10). Purchase tickets online or at the VRC the night of the performance. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the 2013 Sea Music Festival. Geoff Kaufman Professor Joe Roman at the Charles W. Morgan after-hours Series for Staff and Volunteers Tuesday, October 16 at 5:30 p.m. All staff and volunteers are invited to the second talk in a series of occasional talks by outside historians, scientists, and others whose work sheds light on the Charles W. Morgan s links to larger themes in American culture and life. Prof. Joe Roman from the University of Vermont will share his recent whale-related research and thoughts on history-science connections in two parts: 1. The 20 th -c shift in attitudes about whales, with an emphasis on the 1960s increase in environmental awareness and the post 1980s understanding of their ecological importance. 2. The four ways in which whales are ecosystem engineers: their depletion has likely altered the structure and function of the oceans; yet recovery is possible and in many cases underway.
Dr. Roman is the author of Listed: Dispatches from America s Endangered Species Act (Harvard University Press, 2011), the history and economics of endangered species conservation, and Whale (Reaktion 2006), a cultural and population history of whales and whaling. His science and nature writing has appeared in The New York Times, New Scientist, Audubon, Conservation, among others. His research has been covered by the Associated Press, National Public Radio, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, and other outlets. Joe has also completed work related to invasive species genetics and heads a public online forum, Eat the Invaders. WHEN: Tuesday, October 16 5:30 p.m. Presentation 6:15 p.m. Discussion and Refreshments WHERE: Campbell Room (Beneath the Planetarium) Refreshments will be provided **UPDATE: Copies of Prof. Joe Roman s book, Whale will be available for sale at the event. Retail price is $19.95 and staff price is $15.91 with tax. Cash, check or credit card will be accepted.** RSVP appreciated to: erin.marchitto@mysticseaport.org so we can be sure to have enough chairs and refreshments! Erin Marchitto. The Adventure Series Kicks Off with Sarah Everhart Skeels Pushing the Boundaries to Engage Life The River Room, Latitude 41⁰ Thursday, October 18, 1:30 and 7:30 p.m. This year s Adventure Series starts with Sarah Everhart Skeels from Tiverton, Rhode Island, who not only triumphs over adversity from a personal injury, but is also an elite athlete with a passion for sharing her love of sailing with other people with disabilities. Sarah sustained a spinal cord injury when she was riding her bicycle, was hit by a car, and has been paralyzed from the chest down and living life from a wheelchair for 22 years. Life doesn't end after disability; it just continues in a different way. Sarah has hand-cycled across the U.S., swum across the span of Newport Bridge, bare-boated in Guadeloupe and gone scuba diving in Bonaire. She is also a volunteer adaptive skiing instructor and an avid sailor. Sarah will discuss her adaptation to her disability, living life on her terms and how she came to these determinations, as well as how involvement with sports like skiing and sailing are empowering and pushing boundaries determines character.
Staff and volunteers are welcome to either the afternoon program (starting at 1:30 p.m.) or the evening program (starting at 7:30 p.m.) at no charge by calling ext within three working days prior to the date. Please check in at the reception desk in the River Room at Latitude 41 where the programs take place. One complimentary ticket per staff or volunteer. We hope to see you there! The Membership Department Behind the Canvas: A Series of Programs for Art Lovers October 20: How to Create Studio Oil Paintings with Ronald Tinney 3-4:30 p.m. Experience two unique programs with award-winning Maritime Gallery artists in the beautiful setting of the Maritime Art. Hear their personal stories on how they create a work of art through lectures, presentations, and live demonstrations. Learn what inspires their creativity from sketch to finished masterwork. Discover what art collectors today look for in a painting - whether for personal enjoyment or investment. On October 20 Ronald Tinney will demonstrate the process he uses to create his studio oil paintings starting with the reference of several plein air studies. He will discuss his thoughts on design, values, and color mixing and will show several finished paintings while describing the thought process that went into their creation. Tickets are $20 ($15 for members). Please call ext to purchase tickets. The series concludes November 3 with Maintaining Spontaneity and Looseness from Painting Study to Finished Masterpiece with Jonathan McPhillips. Bercaw Edwards. She is well-known on the college campus and the lecture circuit for her extensive knowledge about Melville and the whaling industry. 10 Visit for menus, daily specials, hours, and more. Human Resources Around the Museum Trunnel sales have been successful far beyond expectations, and recently gave nearly $5,000 toward the restoration of the Charles W. Morgan. Led by the intrepid Julie Doering, volunteers at the shipyard sales desk have registered some 1,000 folks who are proud to be a part of the Morgan restoration. Their names will forever be inscribed on the trunnels which form a vital part of the Morgan structure. Sharon Brouillard, Events Coordinator, is the glue that holds special events together. Amongst other efforts, she is the motivating force behind volunteer recruitment for those multi-faceted weekend affairs. Her expertise dictates when, where, what, who and how many folks are required to assure the plausible operation of the event. Hats off, and thanks for your great assistance. Sights and Frights is looking for a few good folks to be greeters and way finders, and helpers for crafts and face painting. Also, we need a few good spooks aboard the Spook Ship Dunton. Please respond to the Volunteer Office at ext. 5378, or call , ext for Tom Brillat or Nancy Hughes. Rhoda Hopkins Root DYK?
Sharon Brown who is now a volunteer, started the Boathouse programs when she was staff. The Boathouse maintains and repairs Araminta, Intrepid, Resolute, Breck Marshall, 8 beetles, 4 cats and 20 rowboats. Volunteers work under staff supervision three days a week at the Boathouse. Rhoda Hopkins Root Volunteer of the Week Kit Werner, a two-time Volunteer of the Week, came to the Museum in June of 1999, soon collected her gold pins and gold stars, and has nearly 5,000 hours to her credit. She served graciously and with great dignity and knowledge in the Maritime Gallery until October 2003, when she clamored for the action that the antique car show promised to provide. By Land and By Sea as it was known, beckoned, and Kit joined up with that great special events and documentation team motivated by Barry Thorp, and soon comprised of Brian Thorp, and Len Parker amongst others who annually produce this major Mystic Seaport event. The Museum is fortunate to have Kit Werner who provides such a very professional working attitude. Many thanks and much appreciation for Kit s remarkable service to Mystic Seaport.
