June 14, 2013 The Plein Air Painters of the Maritime Gallery "Seaport Shimmer" by Russ Kramer, OIL 10" x 8"
For the 17th year in a row, Maritime Gallery artists have congregated at Mystic Seaport this past week to paint the Museum grounds and environs. Following the traditions of the plein air painters of the 19th and early 20th centuries, invited artists have been working at their French easels capturing the shifting light along the Mystic River. Artists will continue to paint on Museum grounds through Saturday. All staff and volunteers are invited to meet the artists and see their finished works at a public opening reception this Saturday, June 15, from 5:30 to 7 pm. The reception will be hosted at the Maritime Gallery and refreshments will be served. The Plein Air Painters exhibition and sale will remain open at the Maritime Gallery through September 8. 5 In November of 2011 Mystic Seaport entered into a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Altus Power to construct a solar array on the roof of the Museum s Collections Research Center building. Over the past 18 months Altus Power has been working to secure the approvals and permits necessary to construct the system. By December of last year all of the approvals were in place. Construction began in January 2013 and was completed in April The system was inspected and approved by Connecticut Light & Power and came online May 21, The system consists of 963 solar panels connected by over 4 miles of wire. The system has a design capacity of 200 kilowatts. This equates to about 20% of the annual electrical demand of the Collections Research Center. How it Works: Every minute, enough of the sun s energy reaches the earth to meet the world s energy demand for one year. Solar modules are comprised of a number of solar cells. Light is absorbed by the semi conductors located inside the solar cells and converted into electrical energy. This process generates direct current (DC) electricity which is routed to an inverter. The inverter converts the electricity generated by the solar modules into alternating current (AC). AC is the form of electricity used in lighting and heating and cooling systems. In many instances the power generated by the system exceeds the building demand and the excess power is sold back to the power company. Since the electrical requirements of the Rossie Mill are so high, our generation capacity will never exceed our demand. Therefore all of the electricity we generate will be consumed on site. We have installed a real time system monitor in the Treworgy Planetarium. Please feel free to step inside the Planetarium and witness the system work Ken Wilson
Education and Interpretation Departments Team up for Special Program for Guilford High School Students On May 21 seniors from Guilford High School were treated to a special educational program that demonstrated team work and creativity between the Education and Interpretation Departments. The students were from two different classes, one called Voyages and Vessels that combines maritime literature and boat building, and one that was studying CT architectural history. Both classes enjoyed a special tour of the Morgan with a Moby Dick flavor from Jason Hine. Then the students from the Voyages and Vessels class worked with Chris Andrews on actually putting together different parts of a dyer dhows, and the students from the architectural class participated in an activity with Krystal Rose where they split into teams and analyzed different buildings in the village from an architectural standpoint. Finally, both classes came back together again for a special Morgan music program by Geoff Kaufman. One of the teachers on the trip sent a note to Steve White about the field trip saying: I brought my History through Architecture Class to Mystic Seaport on Tuesday along with our Vessels and Voyages class In all my years teaching, it was one of the best organized, information packed, and productive field trips I have ever had my students attend. Your entire team, including the expert individuals who worked with the students in architecture and boat restoration [Krystal Rose and Chris Andrews], the chanties [Geoff Kaufman], and the gentleman who walked us through the Morgan [Jason Hine], were
exceptional in the expertise and interaction with our students We will definitely be back next year and would like to explore a more developed relationship in the future. Many thanks to all staff involved, including Barbara Jarnagin, who helped to coordinate the staffing and programming. Sarah Cahill Congratulations to Anchor Watch and Ship to Shore Staff for a Busy Spring Season Our spring overnight program season came to a close the last week of May. Over the course of the season which runs from March until May we served 660 students in our Ship to Shore school overnight program, and over 200 students in our Anchor Watch program for youth groups. Thank you to the following education department staff who made it happen: Hallie Payne, Amanda Nicholas, Brian Koehler, Mary Morrissey, Jenna Allessandro, Dean Hantzopoulos, and Dayne Rugh. These programs cannot happen without the help of our Planetarium staff, and all the interpreters, roleplayers, and chanteymen who make our programs so wonderful and unique. A huge thank you to all of them as well! Sarah Cahill
A Note from Barb Dear Mystic Seaport Family: I wanted to thank you from the bottom of my heart for the surprising outpour of love, hope and support from so many of you. The cards and flowers have been a great comfort for Ben and I as we stumble to get our feet back on the ground. In the next few weeks, please have a little patience with me if I suddenly melt a little at the oddest things. I believe that they will get fewer as time goes on with my wonderful co-workers support. Thank you so much. Barb Jarnagin Summer Day Camp Items Needed As we prepare for Summer Day Camp to start in a few weeks we are looking for a little help in gathering some supplies. We are in need of some empty, clean 2-liter bottles for an experiment we will be conducting. We also can still use any shoe boxes that you might wish to be rid of. Please drop any bottles or boxes at Haynes House with a note that they are for Summer Day Camp. Thank you for any help you can give! Mary Morrissey Fed Ex Shipments Please be advised that as of Monday, June 17 there is a new location and procedure for Fed Ex shipments. Fed Ex shipments and supplies will be located in the foyer of 90 Greenmanville Avenue (new H.R. office area), and for same-day pick ups, a call must be made to Fed Ex by 3:30 p.m. at phone If you are sending out a package, please ensure a call is made for Fed Ex to pick up as they will no longer be stopping automatically on a daily basis. Maureen Hennessey Mystic Seaport Ship Modelers Show
Saturday, June 22, 9 am-5 pm The Mystic Seaport Ship Modelers will be displaying and running approximately two dozen ship models on June 22 in the area in front of the VRC and in the South Basin. Ship models on display will include racing sailboats, tugboats, trawlers (including the scale model of Florence show above), motorboats, and even a submarine. Many of these are radio-controlled and will be run in the South Basin off the floating docks weather permitting. Stop by and join the fun! For more information, please contact Bob Andrle at or smallyachtsailor@gmail.com. -Bob Andrle The 22nd Annual WoodenBoat Show Sails into Mystic Seaport June 28-30
The largest gathering of wooden boats and enthusiasts in New England will once again converge at Mystic Seaport for the annual WoodenBoat Show Friday through Sunday, June 28-30, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. More than 100 traditional and classic wooden boats of every type will be on display, from handcrafted kayaks, to mahogany runabouts, to classic sailboats and schooners. A special feature this year will be six newly-built whaleboats for the Charles W. Morgan. The boats are part of a 10-boat national project to construct replica whaleboats to be carried onboard the ship on her 38th Voyage in Organizations from around the country are building the 28-foot long open boats for Mystic Seaport. The boats at the show will be from the Independence Seaport Museum in Philadelphia; New York City s Rocking the Boat; Gannon & Benjamin Marine Railway of Vineyard Haven, MA; Beetle Boat Shop of Wareham, MA; the New Bedford Whaling Museum; the Great Lakes Boat Building School in Cedarville, MI; and The Apprenticeshop of Rockland, ME. The Apprenticeshop builders plan to sail and row their boat from Maine to Mystic over the course of five days.
During the weekend, the Morgan will be located on the Museum s lift dock over the Mystic River in preparation for her launch on July 21. Visitors will be able to view the exposed hull and go on board. Demonstrations and workshops will be hosted throughout the weekend and more than 100 vendors will offer items for sale including maritime art, antiques, tools, books, nautical gear, and much more. The event is hosted in partnership with WoodenBoat Publications. Visit for more information. Shannon McKenzie Library Fellows Annual Used Book Sale Friday, June 28, 4-6 pm The G.W. Blunt White Library Fellows will host their Annual Used Book Sale during WoodenBoat Show weekend. This year, for the very first time, the Fellows will host a special reduced-price, preview sale for Museum staff and volunteers on Friday, June 28, from 4-6 pm. All Dutch Auction items will be sold for $7, instead of the normal $10 rate. Many free items will also be available. The book sale will be held at the G.W. Blunt White building. Staff and volunteer badges will be required for admission. We hope to see you there. -Jim Giblin First Thursday Lecture: July 4 In anticipation of the Charles W. Morgan's July 21 launch, Matthew Stackpole will join with whaling historian Steve Purdy for the forthcoming First Thursday Lecture on July 4. Matthew is the profound speaker of all-things Morgan. Steve Purdy is a fascinating speaker, and well-known to First Thursday buffs. He is coordinating plans for the Morgan's launch and will describe the extent of the planning, and the vast scope of details involved in this mammoth production. Volunteers and staff will benefit greatly from this presentation and should plan early to attend. The venue returns to the third floor of the Stillman Building: 8:30 am for coffee and donuts, and 9 am for the presentation. Rhoda Hopkins Root
Volunteer of the Week Happy and smiling Jules Kranich Jr. came to Mystic Seaport as a volunteer in January After proper Orientation and Training, he joined the Morgan crew for the restoration of our venerable vessel. He is a retired sales representative, and upon his arrival stated that he had no special skills, but was thrilled at the thought of being in the Shipyard, and becoming a part of the Morgan. Many, many hours later he has proved himself a natural, and has contributed much to the refurbishing of the old whaler. As a High Hopes volunteer, he knows his way round horses, and has been very helpful to that organization. Hats off, and thank you, Jules Kranich. The Museum is pleased to have you aboard.
