DECEMBER 6, 2013 MYSTIC SEAPORT HOLIDAY PARTY Mystic Seaport employees and their guests are invited to the annual Holiday Party in the VRC on Thursday December 12 at 5 pm. Employees are asked to bring a dish and BYOB. Dessert will be provided. Don t forget to break out your holiday best for the Most Festive Outfit. There will be prizes and raffles. Looking forward to seeing everyone and celebrate this time of year! Here is a little inspiration from a festive group! MORE GREAT FEEDBACK ON MSE WEBSITE The website edgital.org recently had some great things to say about the newly released Mystic Seaport for Educators website. The article talks about Mystic Seaport being on the edge of museum education and digital media. You can read the full article here:
WELCOME ISABELLA ZAGARE! Please join me in welcoming Isabella Zagare to Mystic Seaport. Isabella will be joining the team as Controller effective December 9 th. She brings an impressive background of not-for-profit experience, including stints as the Director of Finance at Ocean Community YMCA (Westerly) and Business Manager at Pine Point School (Stonington). She graduated from Smith College and holds an MBA from University of California, Berkeley. She is also a licensed certified public accountant. I would also like to thank Kathy Bremer for all her hard work and dedication that she has provided the Finance Team during the search for a new Controller. -Marcy Withington A few things about Isabella, she sings classical music which means she sings mostly in choirs but she also sings in operas upon occasion. Isabella is an avid traveler and has been all over western Europe and Scandinavia, as well as to Venezuela, Australia, and New Zealand. Her next big outing will be to South Africa. Isabella has sung at Carnegie Hall and the Vatican; she is a member of NARAS, the group that votes for the Grammy winners every year; she went to the same school as Lady Gaga and has been studying/practicing tai chi for over 10 years. Isabella is originally from New York City (born in Manhattan) and lived in California for 20 years before moving to Rhode Island. She has worked for notfor-profits for most of her career, including such diverse places as the Metropolitan Opera, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, De La Salle High School (Concord, CA), Pine Point School, and, most recently, the Ocean Community YMCA. Isabella lives in Westerly with her husband and fellow CPA, David, and two sweet birds named Jude and Pepper. Isabella s office will be in the CRC and she can be reached at x5068. Please join in welcoming Isabella to Mystic Seaport!
MEET NANCY SEAGER Title: Registrar and Collections Associate Department: CRC Extension: 5340 SB: How long have you been at Mystic Seaport? NS: I began working in Curatorial in There was a short break but I m back and happy to be here. Funny how things work. SB: What s the best part of your job? NS: This job is some of all the things I like and more art, history, research, even boats in a beautiful setting with good people I enjoy. Add an amazing collection and the only thing missing is Boston. SB: What are you passions/interests outside of the workplace? NS: Honestly, I just love museums. In days of yore, when the MFA was free, I d cut through the galleries on my way to classes. Now, a new exhibit anywhere is still my favorite way to spend a day. Lately, I m into textile history in general and hooked rugs in particular, so I m doing some of my own design which, coincidentally, opens up a whole new world of museums to visit. And now an old house in North Stonington is taking up time and energy, but I like the process (most of the time) and the progress and I m learning lots of ye olde things along the way. And who doesn t do family genealogy in spare time? SB: What is your favorite memory of Mystic Seaport? NS: One favorite memory makes it difficult, but for a number of reasons, it might be playing the role of wharf rat with Dave Mathieson during LLT s one year. Froze to death, ate barely cooked chicken from a pitifully inadequate campfire and totally enjoyed the whole thing. Or, maybe setting up the Cup show in San Diego? Or, recently, the totally unrestrained excitement of a 10 year old when he walked into the vault? His grandparents just beamed. Or, the Quonset hut party when everyone but me got food poisoning? Did you say one? If you would like to be featured in the next HR Staff Bulletin, please contact Jeanne Gade at ext
WITH DEEPEST SYMPATHY Mystic Seaport extends deepest sympathy to Dean Hantzopoulos on the passing of his mother. Our thoughts are with Dean and his family at this sad time. EDUCATION DEPARTMENT VIRTUAL PROGRAMMING UPDATE The Treworgy Planetarium completed virtual programs with eight 5 th grade classrooms in Bloomington, IL this past week, and will do programs for eight more 5 th grade Bloomington classrooms next week. In addition to learning about various aspects of astronomy, the students were treated to presentations of the night sky as it looks from various locations around the world. Thanks to Dayne Rugh and Larry Krozel for the wonderful presentations! The programming with the Bloomington students is made possible by a grant from State Farm Insurance. -Sarah Cahill BABY MAXWELL HAS ARRIVED! Arlene and Sam Marcionette welcomed their baby boy Maxwell Bernard Marcionette at 7:21pm on November 24, He weighed in 8 pounds, 6 ounces and was 21 inches long. Arlene has most recently worked as a Corporate Membership Associate and will return to Mystic Seaport as the Shoreside Operations Manager of the 38 th Voyage. Thank you everyone, for the beautiful flowers and all the kind wishes for our new family! The arrangement was absolutely gorgeous and brightened up our room. I am very fortunate to work with such a thoughtful and generous group of people. We are doing great and wish you all a wonderful holiday. We look forward to introducing Maxwell in the coming weeks! All our best, Arlene, Sam, & Max 403(b) Plan Eligibilty Notice (Supplemental Retirement Accounts) Who Can Contribute: The supplemental retirement annuity plan is available to all paid employees. Bring your young ones to the Membership Building where Santa wants to hear about their special Christmas wishes. No commercial entrapments just a conversation between Santa and each child with great photo opportunities. Then enjoy a cup of cider and cookies to celebrate the season. Across the way in Howell Classroom decorate your own cookies from 1 3 p.m. and take them home. Cookies and frosting ingredients provided. And don t forget to visit the Children s Museum from 10 a.m. 4 p.m. to make a Christmas gift for someone at home. -The Membership Department THE ADVENTURE SERIES CONTINUES Katie Spotz Alone across the Atlantic in a Rowboat The River Room, Latitude 41 Thursday, December 19 1:30 and 7:30 p.m.
Katie Spotz from Mentor, Ohio, at age 24 has a long list of accomplishments, but her most remarkable feat was a row across the Atlantic Ocean in 2010 lasting 70 days when she set a world record from Africa to South America for the youngest-ever solo ocean rower. Throughout her row, Katie wasn t just seeking to make history. She was also raising money for the Blue Planet Network, a non-profit funding safe drinking water projects for the billion people around the world in need. As interest grew in Katie s efforts, donations came flooding in and, to date, the total stands at over $150,000. Katie is proof that ordinary people can make a difference. Come meet her! Staff and volunteers are welcome to either the afternoon program (starting at 1:30 p.m.) or the evening program (starting at 7:30) at no charge by calling x5331 to reserve a place. Please check in at the reception desk for each program. We hope to see you there! -The Membership Department 2014 MYSTIC SEAPORT HOLIDAY SCHEDULE January 1, 2014 January 1, 2015 Holiday Day/Date Operating Schedule New Years Day Wednesday January 1, 2014 Holiday Schedule Martin Luther King Jr. Day Monday January 20, 2014 Closed President's Day Monday February 17, 2014 Holiday Schedule Memorial Day Monday May 26, 2014 Holiday Schedule Independence Day Friday July 4, 2014 Holiday Schedule Labor Day Monday September 1, 2104 Holiday Schedule Columbus Day Monday October 13, 2014 Holiday Schedule Thanksgiving Day Thursday November 27, 2014 Limited Opening Thanksgiving Holiday Friday November 28, 2014 Holiday Schedule Christmas Eve Holiday Wednesday December 24, 2014 Closed Christmas Day Thursday December 25, 2014 Closed New Year's Day Thursday January 1, 2015 Holiday Schedule YOGA CLASS NEW LOCATION!
