1 April 2016 The Ultralight Squadron of America Newsletter Published monthly by the Ultralight Squadron of America, Perris Valley Airpark, Perris, California. USA OFFICERS Gary Pittman President (714) Frank Mamone Vice President (909) Jim Farthing Secretary (760) Mike King Treasurer (951) Make checks out to: EVUPA Mail dues to: 9175 Bonita Drive Cherry Valley, CA Jim Shepherd Sergeant-At-Arms (951) LES SEYMOUR Ultralog Editor (760) President s Message Greetings Club Members: Spring is here and with it comes a lot of club activities. First on our list is our own fly-in at the April meeting. A potluck, flying competition, club meeting and more flying are scheduled for the day. I would like to invite everyone to come and bring your family and friends. In the March addition of EAA Sport Aviation, there is an article about an Ultralight chapter in Champaign, Illinois. The article is about the secrets to the club s success and how they attract new members. Their secret is Food, Family and Flying. Heck we ve known that for over 30 yrs. The main theme of the article was in order to be a successful club, you need all three: food family and flying, which pretty much describes our club. (Maybe they should write about us.) The point I want to make is to thank each and every one of you for making our club one of the best in the country. Because of your involvement and dedication, our club has been in existence for over 30 years. That is a fantastic track record. Let s continue to plan for more flying events, especially if it involves food and family. As we enter spring, I encourage everyone to give his or her aircraft a thorough inspection before flying. Don t put off any repairs until later because bad things can happen now. Look forward to see you at the April club meeting. Fly safe, fly often.

7 April 2016 THE ULTRALOG Ultralight Club Fly-out to Borrego Valley Airport March 18 Jim, thanks for the help. We had a great time; Leo, Gary and I were the only flyers. John, Joe and Bill came out as ground support. Jim Shepherd also came out for the day. Small group but we still had a good relaxing time. Weather was almost perfect, a little wind during the day which still allowed for a late Friday afternoon flight to Ocotillo. Good that Borrego had remote operated runway lights as we got back a little late. Flight back Saturday morning after breakfast was also perfect weather with a slight tail wind. Doug Bauer It's been an enjoyable weekend doing support for our Ultralight Club. The pilots slept under the stars...i felt guilty in the RV! John Kratz, "Support Team Leader" was up early getting everyone breakfast and coffee. Next year John and I plan to fly our own planes to Borrego Valley Airport. I have to admit the steep descent into the valley through winding mountain roads was inspirational even in an RV. It was even better in a plane! Joe Micalizzi Friday morning was overcast at Perris and Corona. Perris planes and vehicles departed at 10 AM and Leo left Corona 30 minutes later. Pilots and ground crew had a great weekend at Borrego Valley Airport. Friday evening everyone elected to eat at the Airport Restaurant instead of cooking. Joe drove to Borrego and got coffee and breakfast for everyone. Special thanks to the ground crew for supporting the event. Special thanks to Vicki Cole and team at Borrego Airport for their airport service. Page 7

8 THE ULTRALOG April 2016 John Kratz and Joe Micallizi Present Awards At the March meeting new club members John Kratz and Joe Micallizi aka Skycam Joe presented two awards for appreciation to two long standing members John Karevoll and Mike King. John Karavoll made his aircraft available for flight familiarization and Mike King for providing technical knowledge, advice and help in preparing their new (to them) ultralights ready for flight. John Karevoll and Mike King contributed much personal time in mentoring and supporting John and Joe. A plaque was given to John Karevoll saying A Man s Home is His Castle But a Hangar is His Sanctuary. Mike King s plaque is a piece of old siding that says Mike King Hangar Mechanic on Duty. Thanks to all four for carrying the club spirit. Page 8
