2 IT S ALL FAIR! April Member Spotlight Dave Love This month s member spotlight is our Vice President, Dave Love. Dave got involved with the Jefferson County fair in November of He was contacted by the county commissioners and was asked to help the fair authority as they were experiencing money troubles. Dave agreed to help as a consultant and not a voting member it wasn t until 2015 that Dave finally became a voting member. Dave was a CPA (Certified Public Accountant) by trade and had recently retired and moved back to the area and was looking for something to do when he was approached. He felt that his accounting background and knowledge would be a good asset to the fair. His main role became managing the money to eventually be able to manage the debt and unpaid bills. When he got involved, the fair authority was in debt of $1.6 million and since then he has been able to help turn it around so now the fair authority not only is able to pay all their bills on time, but now they are able to put money into savings. During his time with the Fair Authority, this is the one thing he is most proud of helping the fair become solvent. As his most proud moment it also becomes his greatest concern. He has been able to watch the fair overcome some large obstacles to get to this point but who will continue, who will keep the fair running smoothly and profitably? He hopes that we may be able to attract some new and younger people to the fair authority. Throughout the years Dave has been involved he has got to be a part of the construction of numerous of buildings. One that sticks out to him is the Red Livestock Show Arena. The construction process hit a few bumps in the road but he was able to get help from various people in our community to pull it all together. Dave has been able to do that with most every project he is involved with. Some interesting facts about Dave: He grew up in a family that did not volunteer for anything but then it became a requirement for Dave as part of his jobs. This changed him and volunteering became almost like an addiction. He retired 27 years ago and he is still extremely active in our community. In addition to the fair authority, Dave has volunteered on the Water and Sewer Authority as well as the Area Agency on Aging. He served as a president of board for the Area Agency on Aging Volunteer Spotlight Evelyn Grant When I think of a fair volunteer, this woman is always the first person that comes to my mind. Evelyn Grant has been involved with the Jefferson County Fair since the times when it was held in Sykesville. She got started with the fair through being a 4-H leader of a livestock club. Evelyn s children were members in the club and they showed various animals in both 4-H and FFA. When the fair moved to Brookville there were no buildings only tents. She can remember the animals staying in large tents and there were always 2 tents set up where the expo and grange buildings are located now. The grand stands were not there yet, but there were regular bleachers in their place. In previous years, Evelyn would attend the state conventions. There she had the chance to meet people from all across Pennsylvania with a similar passion for county fairs. While at the state convention she always took many notes and may even still have some of those notes. Evelyn can be found now helping out in the ice cream stand or the Grange Pie Booth both are located under the grand stands. She is also responsible for the set up and care of the Grant Kitchen which can be found in the green Songer building. Evelyn helped with the design of the Community Stage where you may find her playing music. You may also notice that her name (and Jim, her husband) is on the Community Stage. This is just another example of the work, time, and efforts that she and her husband have put into the Jefferson County Fair. In addition to the Jefferson County Fair, Evelyn has been involved with local granges for a very long time. Many people do not know that Granges are a family organization started after the civil war it was one of the only groups that included women and the goal was to help the farmers get back on their feet after the war. Evelyn and her husband Jim used to run a dairy farm and they both are active in the Jefferson County Dairy Promotion Committee.
3 IT S ALL FAIR! April UPCOMING EVENTS Monster Truck Show 2018 General Exhibit Updates Big changes are happening in the General Exhibits building for the upcoming fair - new contests, new rules, and new schedules. Quilt Square all entries into this contest become property of the fair and will be put together to later be auctioned off as a whole quilt. Both Bob and Denise have been tremendous volunteers in the General Exhibits Building and he will certainly be missed. New Contests: Christmas Tree Decorating Contest Repurposed Creations including Pallet Decorating Pat Catan s Paper Mache Hand Decorating Contest Fresh Eggs Quilt Square Contest For the Christmas Tree Decorating contest, the theme for 2018 is Christmas in July. For the repurposed creations we have 8 classes - Painted Pallets, Decorated Pallets, Furniture made from Pallets, Socks, Mittens/Gloves, Plastic Bottles, and Books. The paper mache hand Pat Catans was generous enough to donate 15 hands that can be picked up at the Blue Shields building on Wednesday, June 6 between the hours of 4:00 pm to 7:30 pm. If you wish to purchase your own paper mache hand to begin working on it sooner that is fine. Eggs many people raise their own chickens and harvest their own eggs and we would like to see them. For more information on the new contests visit the fair website exhibitor premium book page. Or contact Stefany Alexander ( ) Rules: One major rule change is that all exhibitors are allowed to only enter 1 item per class this is a change from 2 items per class in previous years. Another update in the rules is the cost per entry. For every 5 items that are entered in any adult class the cost is $1 (youth classes are free). Early entries are still appreciated but postage must be included for tags to be mailed. If no postage is included the tags will be held at the registration table for July 14 or 15. Schedule: Items must arrive on July 14 or 15. Pick up time has changed Items will be available to be collected on Sunday, July 22 between 8am 11am.
4 IT S ALL FAIR! April The regular April meeting of the Jefferson County Fair Authority was held in the Conference Room of the Jefferson County Conservation Center on Wednesday, April 4, 2018 Chairperson s Report Wayne Jackson reviewed the upcoming calendar for April mentioning that the 4-H Rifle Club s Regional Shoot would be held in the Exhibit Buildings on Saturday the 7th from 8:00 a.m. until about 4:00 p.m.; and that Pine Creek and Brookville Fire Companies would have gun raffles during the month. Wayne reported that he attended a meeting in DuBois during the past month concerning Games of Chance and evaluated the fair to be totally in compliance with rules. He has been dismissing quite a few campers from storage and has the goal of removing all by the end of April. Building & Grounds Committee Wayne Jackson reported that, through assistance from Doug Brosius and John Hunger, both tractors have been repaired and equipped with new batteries. Wayne Jackson also reported that the old roofs on the three Dairy Barns have been covered with new steel roofing. The materials and labor came a little under the estimates for the capital improvement grant so Todd Boyer has been contracted to do some upgrading on the electric in those buildings. Fundraising and Special Events Committee Jim Grant reported that more than 70 letters were mailed on December 13, 2017 to sponsors of the 2017 fair requesting sponsorships for So far there have been 37 responses with total donations of $13,050. There has been a discussion with Dawna Ceriani about the best way to auction off the carvings done by T & D Carvings at this year s fair. A number of methods have been tried, but all have been a little disappointing financially. After some discussion, it was decided to have the items available for sale each night between 6:30 and 7:00 p.m. with an auction of all remaining items on Saturday. General Exhibits Committee Stefany Alexander reported that she has been lining up judges for the General Exhibits and has that about done. The next committee meeting will be held on April 19, Premium Book Committee Jim Grant reported that most of the Premium Book has been updated on the website and is available for use. Queen and Princess Committee Following a recent committee meeting, it was determined that the Jefferson County Queen program is out-classed in competition with larger fairs that have a larger budget to spend on their royalty and appearances at the state convention. The Jefferson County queen s entry at the convention has been a requirement for the queen to be eligible for a $500 educational scholarship. Although the fair has covered room and meal costs for the queen and her mother, there appeared to be a financial hardship for some families with other costs including appropriate clothing for the pageant. With these concerns in mind it was decided to eliminate the mandate that the annual fair queen must participate in the PA State Fair Queen Competition in order to be eligible for the annual scholarship; however, she may choose to participate in the State Pageant if local funding is provided by the Queen Committee; and to raise the queen s scholarship to $1,000 and the scholarship for the reserve queen to $750 for Applications will be due for submission by June 20, It was also agreed to provide weekly passes to the past queens who attend the fair each year. New Business Wayne Jackson reported that the Spring Zone I meeting will be held at Christ the King Manor on Friday, April 27, Wayne Jackson reported that the next meeting of the Fair Authority will be held on Wednesday, May 2, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. in the Conference Room at the Jefferson County Conservation Center.
