1 MAY 20, 2016 CELEBRATION OF LIFE FOR JIM CONLIN The family of Jim Conlin would like to invite Jim s friends and colleagues to a Celebration of his life on Wednesday May 25 at 5 pm in the River Room. Please RSVP to Jeanne Gade (jeanne.gade@mysticseaport.org or ) by Monday May 23. In lieu of flowers the family ha requested that donations be made in Jim s memory to Mystic Seaport Museum. These funds will benefit the Summer Camp Program in which Jim s grandchildren have been attendees in recent years. STAFF COOKOUT WEDNESDAY JUNE 15 All Staff are invited to a cookout hosted by the Management Team. Hotdogs, hamburgers and veggie burgers will be available along with beverages. Staff are invited to bring a side dish or dessert. Cookout starts at 4:30 pm in the Shipyard, rain or shine! Sign up sheets will be sent to individual departments. Hope to see everyone there! PILOTS STAFF FELLOWSHIP & LISA COOK REED AWARDS The PILOTS Fellowship Grant Committee and the Lisa Cook Reed Review Committee met earlier this spring to review applications for these funds. There were 11 applications submitted for both funds. Both groups were once again pleased with the diversity of applications and enjoyed the opportunity to learn about our staffs passions and interests. All the applications were extremely compelling and the committees had a very difficult time with their selections. Ultimately they were able to award 6 recipients for this year. They are: LISA COOK REED FUND Walter Ansel Shipyard Continuation of Studies in Westlawn Yacht Design Josh Barrett Facilities Certification for Blowback Testing Nancy Hughes Education Attend Course in 19 th Century Photography Geoff Kaufmann Interpretation Attend Folk Archives Conference Jeff Rossi Interpretation Attend GreenWood Fest 2016 PILOTS FUND Dan Harvison Film & Video Attend Drone School Denise Kegler Interpretation Attend International Museum Theater Conference The PILOTS corps and the Lisa Cook Reed committee wish to express their thanks to all those who applied and to encourage staff members to be looking out for opportunities for future awards. Congratulations to those that have been selected!

2 THANKS FROM PILOTS On behalf of the PILOTS corps, please accept our thanks and appreciation for all of the hard work you put in to prepare for and host the PILOTS on their work weekend. 110 PILOTS were engaged in projects throughout the museum. For the past 43 years, the PILOTS have witnessed and participated in some remarkable changes at Mystic Seaport. The one constant during that time has been the dedication of our passionate, knowledgeable and friendly staff who enable the PILOTS to come each spring and fall and be inspired yet again by the Museum they care about so deeply. This message from a new PILOT is a testament to your dedication and enthusiasm. Hi Chris, Just a quick note to say thanks for a great Pilot's weekend. A truly transformative event for me. I'll be walking the grounds with pride this summer eagerly pointing out the small contributions that I've made. As always, kudos to the staff and regular volunteers at the Seaport. All top notch and a special shout out to Doug (and Anne) who made a couple of hours of "oiling the decks" very informative and a lot of fun. Of course, the pilots were very welcoming and very nice folks...and Evelyn also had a great weekend. I'll note that she doesn't do any painting at home. At least not so far ; ) Looking forward to enjoying the Seaport this summer. Tom -Chris Freeman, EveAnne Stouch and Susan O'Donnell FIRST THURSDAY A huge thank you to Maria Petrillo and Elysa Engelman for last week s informative First Thursday lecture about the exciting new exhibit that is being planned to support the Packard Cabin Exhibit on the second floor of the Stillman Building. For our June 2 nd First Thursday, Fran Muller, Lead Interpreter, LA Dunton, will present The Men of the L.A. Dunton and Their Stories. She will use oral histories in her presentation. You will hear from the fisherman what they did all day through their own words. Maurice Kearley is the last surviving Dunton fisherman who fished for 35 years so his stories are by far the most interesting/exciting. First Thursday will be held in the Campbell Room. Donuts, coffee, and tea will be available at 8:30 am followed by the presentation at 9 am. -EveAnne Stouch and Susan O'Donnell

All proceeds support Greenhouse operations. The Plant Sale is at the Facilities Management Greenhouse. We hope to see you there! DUBLIN SEMINAR FOR NEW ENLAND FOLKLIFE New England at Sea: Maritime Memory and Material Culture June New England at Sea: Maritime Memory and Material Culture is a three-day conference of nineteen lectures on the maritime history of New England and adjacent areas of New York and Canada from the mid-eighteenth to the early twentieth century. Focusing on how the region remembered its maritime past, the weekend begins with a keynote address by the historian W. Jeffrey Bolster on the pivotal role that Gloucester, Massachusetts, played in the memory of its fishing industry. It continues with individual topics such as chart making, the keeping of ship logs, and ship-design technologies. Later sessions address subjects such as whaling, slaving, privateering, and maritime family life; the rise of marine societies and efforts to preserve old ships; and the growth of maritime antiques businesses. An optional workshop presented on Friday afternoon will examine the history of celestial navigation including a detailed exploration of the sextant, and Mystic Seaport s digital resources used in genealogical and maritime-related research. (Presented by our own Paul O Pecko and Brian Koehler.) The Seminar is designed for educators, historians, collectors, independent scholars, librarians, preservationists, and museum curators, as well as students and the general public. -Dan McFadden BOOK CLUB Please join the Seaport Book Club on June 9, for a discussion of "Ninety Percent of Everything: Inside Shipping, the Invisible Industry That Puts Clothes on Your Back, Gas in Your Car, and Food on Your Plate, by Rose George. The author spent several weeks aboard a container ship as part of her research into the history, experiences, activities, dangers, environmental effects, economic and political implications of our current shipping industry. We will gather at Sally Salancy's house at 5 p.m. for our June Meeting and potluck supper. Please call her at (860) for directions. Everyone is welcome to all of our meetings. -Phyllis Sailer
