AUGUST 26, 2016 MYSTIC SEAPORT A SMOKE-FREE ENVIRONMENT Effective September 6, Mystic Seaport will become a Smoke- Free Environment. It is the intention of Mystic Seaport to prohibit smoking on all areas of the grounds in order to provide and maintain a safe and healthy work environment for all employees, volunteers and visitors. For purposes of this policy; smoking is defined as the act of lighting, smoking or carrying a lighted or smoldering cigar, cigarette, pipe or electronic cigarette of any kind. The Smoke-Free Environment applies to: All areas of buildings occupied by Seaport employees. All grounds and exhibits of the Seaport. All vehicles owned or leased by the Seaport. All visitors (customers and vendors) to Seaport premises. All contractors and consultants and/or their employees working on Seaport premises. We believe that the spirit of thoughtfulness and cooperation which is characteristic at the Seaport is adequate to resolve any disputes which might arise under this policy. Any questions or concerns about the application of the policy should be brought to the attention of the individuals supervisor and/or the Human Resources Department. WELCOME TESSA GRACE! Congratulations to Erin Richard, her husband Damon and big brother Tucker, who welcomed Tessa Grace on August 16. Mom and baby are healthy and doing well!
MYSTIC SEAPORT & MATT BARNES IN THE NEWS.IN DENMARK! Shipwright Matt Barnes has been spending most of this summer at the Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde Denmark working on building a Viking ship. Matt was the recipient of the 2016 Mallory Grant. He seems to have received the attention of the local press and made the front page of the Roskilde DAGBLADET! Matt has been documenting his experience in his blog and also on his Instagram account how_not_to_build_a_boat. Göran Buckhorn was kind enough to translate the article for us. Matt is expected back in the Shipyard in early September, we look forward to hearing about his experience. In the newspaper Dagbladet in Roskilde, Denmark, August 17, 2016 Front page: American shipwright prospers Vikings: Presently, the Viking ship museum is visited by the American shipwright Matthew Barnes. Barnes is in Roskilde to trace the American wooden boat building tradition back to its European roots. And of course, he is to learn the trade from the best [shipwrights] in the world. That knowledge, he is going to bring back to the museum in New England, where he works. Inside: Caption (above image): Matthew Barnes is working at Mystic Seaport Museum, which has a very impressive collection of American wooden vessels, among other things, the only still seaworthy wooden whalingship. Header: Barnes [is] only building [a] boat [A Danish play with words: Barnes bygger bara både] Exchange: For two months the American Matthew Barnes prospers as he is on an exchange program at the Viking ship museum to learn about the old tools and ship building technics. By Lars Kimer
Roskilde: Matthew Barnes grabs hold of the axe and starts carefully to cut in the oak plank that lies in front of him. Carefully, he bends over to take a closer look at the plank. How are the years running? He takes a good look at the small chips cut off by the axe, ensuring that as many fibers remain intact. That is the way you keep the strength and flexibility in a piece of wood. Normally, the 32-year-old American works at the museum Mystic Seaport, which is located between New York and Boston, in the state of Connecticut, in the village of Mystic. The museum has approximately 120,000 [sic!] visitors a year. I am here on a scholarship to learn about the Vikings tools, how you use them, and how you use the knowledge in ships building. We are very interested to get more knowledge on how ship building in northern Europe might have affected the American boat building, Matthew Barnes explains. To build Therefore, the trip has also taken him to both the Netherlands and the Faeroe Island. Before he goes home, he is also to visit Sweden, Norway, and Iceland, but the longest stay he will have in Denmark, at the Viking ship museum. We are hoping to be able to track the technics that have been used on the old boats in America to their European roots, says Matthew Barnes, who is an educated ship builder. He has now learned so much that it will only take him three, four days to finish a plank for the Viking ship that he is helping to build. The Viking ship is standing on keel, with a few planks in place at the boat building spot at the Museum Island. Søren Nielsen, from the Viking ship museum, has promised me to send some picture of the ship when she is completed, Matthew Barnes says and smiles. Matthew Barnes continues his trip to Sweden, Norway and Iceland on August 27. Caption (below image): I am hoping to learn a lot about the old tools, and we are very interested to trace the American ship building traditions back to its European roots, Matthew Barnes says. AMISTAD Departure AMISTAD is scheduled to depart on Monday, August 29 th. Please join us to wish them well as they begin the next phase of new programming. There will be coffee and pastries in the Shipyard at 8:15am. Steve White and Len Miller of Discovering AMISTAD will say a few words at 8:30 before the vessel departs for New London. -Shannon McKenzie

2016 ANTIQUE MARINE ENGINE EXPO, AUGUST 20 TH & 21 ST OUR SILVER ANNIVERSARY! 1908 Lloyd 2-cycle Marine, 2 cyl. / 6 HP, made by: Thousand Island Boat & Engine Company of Morristown, NY. From The James Mathews Collection. Twenty-five wonderful years and this show was the best yet. We had 108 Exhibitors and over 340 Exhibits. Saturday was a max crowd and Sunday was only slightly less. This year we celebrated J.W. Lathrop Engines, which all of you know were made right here in downtown Mystic. We had 10 Lathrop engine Exhibits. One of them, or at least its badly corroded casting, was used as a boat anchor here in the Mystic River during the 2005 Engine Show. Once again, the Staff and volunteers teamed up to prepare the Shipyard, set up the steam table, erect tents, and prepare the pool for the RC model boats. One volunteer even worked until midnight Friday. Now that s devotion. Then on Sunday afternoon, more devoted volunteers came in to disassemble what the Friday crew had assembled. Scott Noseworthy, the Engine Collections Manager, was everywhere and anywhere. The 2017 show is planned for August 19 th and 20 th. See you there! MEMBER HATS During the month of August, our beloved Members-only caps are on sale for $15 (regularly priced at $20). Colors include: navy, periwinkle, nautical red, ivory, apple, and pink.
ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL SUMMER CAMP SEASON Mystic Seaport welcomed over 600 campers here this summer (not including the Brilliant!), enjoying Summer Day Camp, Community Sailing, and the Joseph Conrad Overnight Sailing Camp. 7 A GREAT EVENING ON THE RIVER! Thank you to everyone who came out of Tuesday night for the staff picnic! With rain in the forecast the event was moved to the boatshed where staff and guests feasted on a wonderful meal by Coastal Gourmet. Face painting, henna art and a DJ provided a festive and fun evening. The highlight was the dessert competition. This year the judging team of Julia Jankowski, Brian Donlon and Nicholas Bell had their work cut out for them with over 15 entries into the contest! Carole Bishop took home 1st Place the highly coveted Golden Egg Beater and a beautiful hand forged mug by Chip Sowalski for her Down Home Texas BBQ Sheet cake (pictured) that tasted as wonderful as it looked! Coming in at 2 nd Place was Nathan Adams for a delicious Pecan Pie and Amanda Keenan took 3 rd Place with her delightful Blueberry Pancake Cupcakes.
