1 August 25, 2011 More than 300 Antique Marine Engines Largest Show in USA This year was the 20th Anniversary Antique Marine Engine Exposition and worthy of the title. As part of the show last weekend, we had a special exhibition of Palmer Marine Engines. Palmers were produced
2 here in Connecticut, starting in Mianus in 1895 and then moving to Cos Cob shortly after. We had the largest gathering of Palmers more than 36 since the factory closed in Once again the staff and volunteers performed beyond expectations nothing new there and Coastal Gourmet provided a very nice Saturday evening dinner for those who chose to take part. Plus, we topped 300 exhibits (largest old marine engine show in the USA) with 98 exhibitors from twelve states. The exhibits ranged from an 1889 steamer to modern day models (to kill for). The model pool was a big attraction to both the young and the young at heart. Every exhibit a museum piece and every exhibitor a curator. 3 (correction from last week: Model Yachts at the Starting Buoys photo by Dennis Murphy) Helping Gidget Last Thursday, August 18th saw an enthusiastic crowd enjoy the presence of and program about American cultural icon, Gidget, aka Kathy Kohner Zuckerman. Kathy and her colleagues 24 hours with us were a great success. It all became possible only a few weeks ago, and none of this could have happened without a variety of museum staff and volunteers catching on, stepping up and helping it all come off without a hitch. Thanks go out to Cheryl Mattson and her reservation stalwarts Danielle Anderson and Linda Prior; Rhoda Hopkins Root and her volunteers Trevor Hutchinson, and Skip and Donna Anderson; Dan McFadden and Kati Roessner for their great PR coverage; Jenny Doak for last minute assistance; and to Williams-Mystic's Mary O'Loughlin for taking on the admissions challenge. Thanks also go to our AV experts. Brandon Morgan, once again, managed things flawlessly. Thank you all. With your help everyone in the Greenmanville Church felt the "stoke." Glenn S. Gordinier, Co-Director, The Frank C. Munson Institute of American Maritime Studies Summer Day Camp 2011 a Mystical experience! Thank you from the bottom of my heart to the many individuals from many departments that gave of their time and expertise to help make Summer Day Camp 2011 a success. There was involvement from every corner of Mystic Seaport. A few highlights include assistance from the Gung Ho! Squad for making giant sea chests for us to store supplies, a donation from Exhibits of "Billy the Goat" for decorating the classroom, a wash tub and bucket from Sam "the Cooper" Pierson, a wonderful tale of mischief delivered by Matthew Stackpole and, as always, amazing talent shared by the entire Interpretation staff with our energetic, eager campers. I would like to extend special recognition to my fellow conspirators Mary Morrissey, Thea Moore, Martha Lane, Sally Sallancy, and Barbara Jarnagin. Also kudos to Rebecca Bayreuther Donahue, Amanda Nichols, Melody Foster, Jeanne Potter, Sara Clement and Rieta Park for their programs as well. And of course without our junior volunteers along with Rhoda Hopkins-Root, Karen Bigger, Linda Prior and the reservations staff, Adele McGuire, Max Maxwell, Bruce Levine, Mary K. Bercaw-Edwards and the members of Squad, Marelda Hart, Liz Cole, Lisa Kerr and of course Sarah Cahill and Jonathan Shay none of this would have been possible. Again, thanks to everyone for a truly mystical summer experience! Chelle Farrand, Summer Day Camp Supervisor Statue Honors the late Mrs. Mallory There is a new statue fountain installed in the members courtyard between the two Mallory buildings. The fountain, placed in honor of the late Mrs. Louise S. Mallory, is donated by Frank J. Giacalone, Jr. her loving husband of 33 years. Born in Washington D.C., June 17, 1909, Mrs. Mallory was the daughter of the late Frank and Edna Sobotka. She passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 28, As the wife of P.R. Mallory, Louise was very active in the beginnings of Mystic Seaport and made a large bequest to the Museum upon her passing. Frank tells the story of how in the early days of the Museum, both P.R. and Louise used to sail from their nearby house to the burgeoning Seaport in order to water the newly planted trees and flowers!
4 Frank states that he chose this particular fountain because it depicts the very essence of Louise Mallory. Throughout her entire life, Mrs. Mallory was hardly ever without a book and at least one cat nearby. Stop by to view the newest addition to the grounds at Mystic Seaport. First Thursday Lecture September 1: Dan McFadden 8:30 am: coffee and donuts 9:00 am: lecture Munson Room, G.W. Blunt White Building Hats off to Communications Director Dan McFadden for spreading the word about Mystic Seaport far and wide. Out of town newspapers feature the Museum on a regular basis, television encourages visitation, and all facets of the media are aware of the outstanding programs offered by the Museum. On Thursday, September 1st, Dan will discuss the communications and public relations operation at Mystic Seaport. The talk will describe the strategy and tactics the Museum uses to generate public awareness and positive coverage in the press. He will also discuss the increasing role social media and internet publishing have in public relations and how the Museum is trying to leverage these modes of communication. Staff members are most welcome, and all volunteers are encouraged to attend. Reservations are strongly urged, however, since seating is limited. Please call the Volunteer office at to reserve your space. FROM THE OFFICE OF VOLUNTEER SERVICES Congratulations to Jeanne Potter, Maritime Art Gallery Director, for her winning ways with desserts. Her fabulous creation copped first prize in the Staff Picnic competition. There is a wonderful photograph in The Hartford Courant of Susan Jerome working on a 1902 Singer sewing machine in the Sail Room of the Museum. According to Dan McFadden, Director of Communications who was named in the accompanying article, After a slow spring, things have really picked up in July and August. (photo by John Woike of The Hartford Courant) Bill Scheer phoned from the Hancock Shaker Museum on his busman s holiday, complimenting the new Visitors Information Team which involves the Navigation Station and the Ask Me folks. Sally Ackley and Kevin Messier with assistance from Jenny Doak, have put together an impressive group of knowledgeable volunteers who are on deck to assist visitors with the myriad of questions they put forth. Bill said, I am proud to announce that I am thrilled at the quality of the information forthcoming. Visitors have their programs, know where to go, and what they want to see. A respected member of the Interpretation Department who is enthused with her work with Junior Volunteers this season, has come forth to commend two of them. Staffer Marcail Riggs reports that Alexandra Lublin and Maya Saca-Schaefer have been so very helpful in all aspects of their work. Without a single complaint, the girls were always on time, opened and prepared their exhibits, were
5 friendly and out-going with visitors, never thought twice about less than attractive chores, and displayed great initiative. Marcail was very pleased to work with them, and hopes that they return next summer. Rhoda Hopkins Root Volunteer of the Week Jovial Rob Robertson arrived as a volunteer in September 2009, after 31 years at Pfizer. His enthusiasm is exceeded only by his wonderful qualifications as an interpreter. Rob is dedicated to the Museum, indicated by his extensive volunteer assignments all successfully completed. To name a few, HOD Squad, Nautical Nightmares, and his outstanding role as a pirate during Pirates Weekends. He is a regular at First Thursdays, and has attended all the orientation and training programs offered. You name it, he has done it all. The Museum thanks Rob for his ongoing support, and appreciates the time and effort he puts forth for the benefit of Mystic Seaport. Live music at Latitude 41 Restaurant Friday, September 2 7:00-10:00 pm Mystic Seaport data administrator Bruce Foulke will be performing at the Shipyard Tavern. Please stop by if you get a chance! Facebook Posts We re nearing the benchmark of 10,000 Likes on the Mystic Seaport Facebook page! Here are some of the things visitors have posted: Oh, about a billion years ago, I worked a season at the seaport. It was the year of the crafter and I sat outside the ships Chandlery and made oyster and eel baskets from black ash trees. I remember fondly having to hoist buckets of water across the commons while sea shanties were being sung. I know they made a recording of what I was doing, as this is what they do. I was so nervous that I couldn't speak. It was one of the best summers ever. R.B. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ I fell in love with Mystic Seaport in the 1980's while doing summer stock. Then came the movie "Mystic Pizza" which underscored this attraction. And now my 14- year-old daughter and I stop there every year since she was 5. I love how it has grown since those minimalist days back in the '80's. J.S. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Took my kids last weekend. What an absolutely great experience! They loved it, my wife and I loved it. We'll be back. C.W. When asked what they liked best: The carriage ride behind Duke the Horse. :-) I assured him I would pass the word along to Duke. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ I would like to thank all the good folks there at the Mystic Seaport, my wife and I had a great time this weekend, and hope to return soon. J.P.
