S. treasurer.wos@gmail.com Peggy Bruce a Trentham Road Matangi From the Editor The outstanding highlight for The Waikato Outdoor Society is undoubtedly the number of members we get participating in the organised events for the club. 27 plus members teamed up to make our firewood gathering day an exceptional success, with the added features of enthusiasm and a fun attitude, a wonderful example of what it takes to make a club rank amongst the best there is. Naturally there are many members whom for a variety of reasons simply are unable to participate in such things as firewood working bees - but we appreciate the backup these people give us as well. It is easy to under estimate the rewarding feeling of pleasure derived from being a useful contributing team member in a highly successful and rewarding team based enterprise such as this. The wow factor of course is just how easy it seems to be able to achieve oh so much when you have the numbers to make light work of the task in hand. WOS would like to take the opportunity the recognise the input of those who helped to make the above mentioned outing such a memorable one. 2 Sunday 29th April Firewood collection outing What a huge success this was for the club - the turnout of members with trailers, utes, axes and chainsaws made this one of the best Working Bee day out events that WOS has ever staged. Conducted by Paul W, the chainsaw quintet soon had a symphony going and the 25 + keen choir of members in a few short hours had the 10 trailers and utes loaded with firewood rings and pinecones ready for transport to the club grounds. The home team had organised a hot reception to honour the exceptional performance so as soon as the wood was unloaded and stacked we revelled in the array of savouries and drinks on offer. The following week a few hardy locals had most of the wood split and stored in the shed, which for the first time is totally filled, with still more wood stacked outside looking a bit cut up about missing out on a prime place out of the weather. 3 Feelin run down Come & hang out for a few days at W.O.S To WOS members Richard and Annie who have been in USA singing in the famous Carnegie Hall with a chorus of 250, singing music composed by Ola Gjeilo A reminder to our visitors and members :- Here at WOS we have NO paid staff of any kind. The nice tidy and presentable grounds and kitchen and ablution areas you see in front of you are kept to a standard entirely by volunteer members. You are expected to adhere to the traditional camping laws of cleaning up after yourselves and taking your rubbish with you. Don t tag yourself as the type that expects others to clean up your mess. 4 The time seems right to start a series of photographic images titled Looking Back so that our newer members gain an insight into how the club has evolved over the years with the input, dedication, foresight & hard work of earlier mem- These two photos show stages of constructing the WOS club house and ablutions block in 1996 not long after the purchase of the Matangi site had been finalised after many months of expensive and difficult land use hassles. 5 Committee Keynotes Swimming pool will be closed much of the time for a while as we have a maintenance programme underway so pool solar heating system is also off. The date for the Olde English Pub Nite Saturday 23rd of June mark it on your calendar Genesis have just notified us of a pending increase in power charges so committee will need to devise a way spread the additional costs fairly to our users. Note past annual power acc: = $ = $ = $ =???? The upgrading of the gas cylinder supply system is under way - Bruce B will be building a new holding bay for the bigger cylinders shortly in readiness for the new cylinders. 6 Today s Gem Anne and WOS are familiar with the old adage that if you talk to the plants they will flourish. I reckon they can t think of anything to say to the plants lately because they have been layering newspapers on the garden beds, - I assume they must be giving them something to read instead!! WOS AGM is to be held in the clubrooms Saturday MAY 19th 1pm W.O.S grounds and facilities are yours and of course open to you and visitors at all times throughout the year so com on over any time, any day and enjoy holiday and leisure breaks here among friends use the spa pool, the BBQ, help out with a few chores if you want explore the walkways, relax and enjoy, stay over for a night or two. Reminder _ Members as well as all visitors to the club grounds are required to fill out and sign the visitors book in the clubhouse on every visit. We have to meet local authority compliance requirements.
