Hope everyone had a great holiday season. The events that are in the works sound great promises to be another successful FBYC year. The new Board is already at work planning out our events, and along with the new members, there is a great feeling of excitement. I do not want to steal any thunder from the Maritime or Social columns, so I will leave them to announce the upcoming events. I will however talk about the December events that were great successes. First, special thanks to now PC Bob and Linda for a very nice final Executive Board Meeting, held at their home, to say good job to the outgoing Board and welcome to the incoming Board. Second, the FBYC annual Christmas party at Plantation Bay was a huge success, with 95 attendees, the venue, meals, choir, band and holiday cheer were all beyond expectations. There were 13 boats and over 70 folks at our house for a cookout following the caroling. See you at our next General meeting on Thursday, January 21st. 3 Page 3 Vice Commodore John Green jag50@bellsouth.net The Holidays are over except for the memories and what memories they are. December was a very busy month for the FBYC. Although there was no general meeting in December, there were plenty of activities. Nancy Epstein and Jeanne Meyer started it all off with the Ladies Luncheon at the Halifax Plantation hosting over 40 guests. Kathy Gallagher was recognized for her years of serving as the hostess. Next up was the Christmas Party held at Plantation Bay. Then Vice Commodore Joe Lindholm and Patty did a fantastic job of pleasing all 90 people in attendance. The food was good and the entertainment exceptional. We all enjoyed the Matanzas High School choir s Christmas carols and Traces of Gold provide great music to dance to. I think Patty and Joe should receive a special thanks from all because after hosting the Christmas Party on a Friday night, they took the lead on the Boat Caroling the following Sunday. There was a large crowd and much food at their home following the canal caroling. Well the Holidays are over and now it s back to work or as close to work as I want to be. Our first General Meeting of the year is on the 21 st and our first event will be a Commodore s Social at the Beachfront Grille on January 28 th. Look for more information soon. December was so busy I could not get a Social Committee meeting set until January 5 th. If you are on the Social Committee you should have an from me with an outline of some suggestions and since then I have received many more great ideas for Social events in Bring your ideas with you to my house that Tuesday at 6:30. And finally, a special thanks to Past Commodore Bob Jaeger. Bob did an outstanding job as Commodore in One of his legacies will be the addition of a new class of member, the Lifetime Member. It was great idea and we have already recognized four members for the 20+ years of service. Happy Boating, John

4 Page 4 Rear Commodore - Dee Cocchiola deecocchiola@gmail.com Happy New Year FBYC... and it's going to be a great one! This is the start of the 24th year of "The Best Little Boat Club in Flagler". Our members make us the best by their hard work, their unflagging support, and their good humor. These are the things that keep us going while others have closed up. My focus this year will be to get everyone fully integrated into the club and engaged in our many fun activities. People join the FBYC to meet people and make lasting friendships. I'd love to see the perfect integration of legacy, newer and newest members enjoying each of our onwater and "ashore" activities. I know that the Maritime Committee has scheduled some great events to get our boats in (on?) the water and the Social Committee will bring some new and inventive activities to keep our members well fed and well entertained while ashore. All members should join in and help plan and conduct these future happy memories. It's the very best way to get to know one another and to support the club. Once again we will be starting the year with a membership waiting list. While we don't like to keep prospective members waiting, the backlog is a testament to the success of our club. People want to join and they'll wait patiently for a spot to open up. I urge their "sponsors" to keep them informed of club activities and invite them to participate, when appropriate. As your Rear Commodore, my primary job is to ensure all members "get the word" and are never left behind. I'll be constantly scanning the club's membership roster to keep it up-to-date and "on line" so we can inform all members of planned activities and, as important, so you can contact one another. As always, I'll be available to answer your questions and help make your FBYC membership a fun and rewarding experience. Longitude Michael Triano and Alan Hendry, Fleet Captains December was a busy time for all of us in the FBYC, with the annual Christmas Party and the final Maritime event for 2015, Caroling on the Canals and a cook out at Joe and Patty Lindholms. Thank you Joe and Patty for all of your hard work this year, especially in December. We had a good turnout for the Caroling, 13 decorated boats with full crews singing and dancing while we went up and down the canals. There were a lot of people who lived on the canals who came out to listen to our music and singing, everyone seemed to enjoy Christmas Spirit. I think we had nearly 70 people come to Joe and Patty s for a great meal holiday fun. Due to some scheduling problems, our January Maritime event to Clarks Fish Camp has been cancelled. There will be the first Maritime Meeting for 2016 at the Triano s house, January 7th at 6:30PM. Please bring a calendar with you and a note book as you will be getting assignments to participate in for the upcoming year. We will be discussing and finalizing some of the trips we talked about at our last meeting. Looking forward to seeing you on Thursday, January 7th.

6 Page 6 Fuel dock safety 7 tips for fueling safely Topping off our fuel tanks is not only one of the more expensive activities boaters do, but it s also one of the most dangerous, especially if you run gasoline as opposed to diesel. To make refueling as safe as possible, follow these seven steps. 1. After tying up at the fuel dock, secure all ports and hatches in the closed position to keep fuel vapors outside the cabin and engine spaces. 2. Keep a portable fire extinguisher in the cockpit or near the fuel fill area. 3. Keep absorbent pads handy, near the fuel overflow vent if possible. 4. Secure the connection between the fuel nozzle and the fuel fill connector to prevent static sparks. 5. Keep an eye on the fuel gauge while filling up. Fuel will expand in tanks when the boat is unattended and the weather warms up, so leave room for expansion. If you plan on boating right after filling up, this isn t as critical. 6. After fueling and securing the fuel nozzle and fill cap, open all hatches and start the bilge blowers. Use the sniff test to check for vapors in the engine room space. Run the blowers for at least five minutes before starting the engines. Remember, take five to stay alive, even on a busy weekend when others are waiting to access the fuel dock. Check for leaks, wipe up any spilled fuel, and properly dispose of used absorbent pads on shore. United States Power Squadron VOL. 9 NO. 10
