2 NBYC Members, April is always an exciting time of year as the weather warms, the daylight hours increase, trees and flowers bloom and we ready our boats for another season out on the water. The schedule of social events and boating activities here at the New Bern Yacht Club are fully underway and we anticipate another successful year of something of interest and enjoyment for everyone. Last week we had a wonderful evening at our monthly General Meeting with the club filled to capacity, an engaging guest speaker, an important vote on updated Club By-Laws and detailed information about upcoming events and cruises. Best of all, there was plenty of time to catch up with new and old friends and acquaintances. Join us each month on the fourth Tuesday at 7:30 pm and, if you wish, bring something to eat for a casual dinner about an hour before the meeting. Wondering what's going on here at the club? Check out the club's website, newbernyachtclub.com, for constant updates on the calendar, event flyers in the SeaWord and Events section, and detailed information about the club in the More/Members Only section by entering the password Susan (our password is always the first name of the Commodore's significant other). So stay up to date on everything that we're doing and join in on the fun! We have almost two dozen Committees that oversee a vast variety of interests and tasks that make NBYC successful as a self-managed volunteer organization. Our Committees, and their respective Chairs, are listed in both the 2019 Directory and on the website in the About section. Do you have an interest in participating with one of our Committees? Please contact a Committee Chair or attend a Committee Meeting to help make NBYC an ever-improving club. Always remember that NBYC is Your Club and that the property and facilities are always available for your use. We look forward to seeing you soon at an event or cruise or just hanging out at the club! -Tim Broderick Commodore brodericknbnc@yahoo.com

3 2019 Cruising The Cruise Planning Meeting was held March 7, the result of which is a Cruising Schedule that has something for everyone; big boats, trailerable boats, kayaks and even mini boats. A Cruising Schedule has been prepared and distributed by Seaword Extra and will be updated as necessary. The first event on the schedule is the annual Shakedown Cruise to Oriental April 26 to 28. Cruise Captains Jim and Patty Smithwick have come up with some new twists which I believe those attending will enjoy. Following on the Shakedown Cruise is a cruise to Southport and Bald Head Island. This cruise is being captained by Frank Bruno and Jerry Crawford. There are thirteen boats signed up which I believe is a record for number of boats taking part in a cruise longer than to Oriental and return. May 11 brings us to the Blessing of the Fleet being sponsored by the NBYC and the New Bern Grand Marina. If you would like to have your boat blessed and/or wish to join the luncheon at Capt. Ratty s after the Blessing, follow the instructions in the flyer Karl Lichty put out on March 20. Buck Irvin is already hard at work designing the Club s raft for the Great Trent River Raft Race on June Of course, he needs a crew. Failing obtaining adequate crew, or in addition to, he is planning on having a raft-up to watch the goings-on. If you are interested in designing or building the raft, helping propel it or just being a spectator give Buck a call at If the weather cooperates, we ll look to schedule a flash cruise about the middle of April. Probably a raft -up at Broad Creek or the Upper Neuse by the Weyerhaeuser Plant. Keep your eyes peeled for a flyer. There are two empty slips in the Clubhouse Marina. If you are interested give me a call. Speaking of the marina the water will be turned on as soon as it is felt there will be no more nights below freezing. Here s to good cruising weather. -Jack Fleming, Rear Commodore eilcmhor@gmail.com

5 Shipmates Information Directory Updates If you are aware of an update to the directory, please let Jim Smithwick know. is much better than meeting at Lowe s or Harris Teeter, and even better than a phone call, but any form of communication is better than ignoring it. Misplaced your directory? It is also available online at newbernyachclub.com in the Members Only tab. -Jim Smithwick (919) If you know a member who is, or recently has been, sick, had an operation, or is just under the weather, or lost a family member, please contact the Sunshine Committee. -Camille Hoffman camhoff1@gmail.com Treasurer s Report The Treasurer s Report may be viewed on eseaword in the members only section after Board acceptance. Board Meeting Minutes If you would like a copy of the Board Meeting Minutes, it may be obtained (after Board acceptance) by ing the Secretary or by viewing on eseaword. Ship s Store A Ship s Store brochure is available at the club to see the most popular items purchased over the past years from New Bern Sporting Goods. A sample of each item is at the club showing color options and prices to help you decide on your choices for purchase. There is now a variety of logos from which to choose as well as fonts for embroidering; samples of those are also available for you to see. The newest items to be offered are: license plates with our burgee, belts, flip flops, key fobs, and totes with the New Bern Yacht Club logo. Continued items for purchase from the store: our stainless-steel mug, glassware, Tervis glasses, burgees, and note cards. Please let me know if I can help you find a special item or gift. -Sue Marsh sue1946@hotmail.com
