1 26 October 2018 Issue 115 POP UP NEWS Mapleton, Queensland New this Week Dear Community Members, I thought it would be appropriate to report to you all on the wonderful week that a dozen of your fellow members spent in the small community of Proston, 90 minutes west of Gympie. Mostly arriving there on Sunday 23rd September, we set up our own camp with power, water and an amenities block at the Proston Golf club and were welcomed with a BBQ that evening. On the Monday Tim McCauley and Peter Gamgee set to work building a new bar and servery at the golf club and the result was amazing. Gary Hansen (our resident plumber) went up on the roof, rescrewing it and repairing guttering, pumps and other plumbing jobs. The rest of us (Jeff Jordan, Glen Rogers, Jim Watters, Graham Syphers, Col Young, Brian Harris, Laurie Gardener, Laurie Fisher and myself) took on the exterior painting of the fairly large clubhouse. It was in a fairly sad state of repair and the finished job is amazing. We painted the amenities block and a timber storage shed. We also cleaned out the workshop resulting in three trailers of rubbish to the dump. Fortunately the weather was kind to us and we put in from 7.30 am to 4 pm every day - not bad considering average age was probably mid seventies. The locals could not get over how well we functioned as a tight, effective, yet good humoured working group. Apart from Wednesday evening when we patronised the local pub, beautiful meals were served up to us by the Golf Club Ladies and on the Saturday evening we were thanked with a farewell barbecue and speeches. Whilst there we also formed a 200 metre path at the Reinke Scrub Conservation Park, suitable for disabled access. The ladies once again entertained us royally (with food). Wednesday afternoon we were taken fishing on Boondooma Dam with very mixed results. Thursday night we had a great camp fire gathering and Friday night it was free drinks at the Hivesville pub. On the Saturday morning we had smoko with the members of the Proston Men's Shed. Obviously it wasn't all work and no play. By 8.30 Sunday morning we had all broken camp and on our way home after a very productive, most satisfying, friendly and fun filled week representing your Shed in a little town that is struggling with drought and a falling population. Regards John Brady President Photo Caption The Proston Golf Club, in its original state. [top left] Building a nature track. [right] The final result. [below]
