1 2016 SPRING NC BIG SWEEP in WAKE COUNTY ~ List of Watershed Cleanups Needing Volunteers ~ VOLUNTEERS WELCOME! Wake County invites you to help clean up our streams, lakes, and wetlands that are tributaries to the Neuse and Cape Fear Rivers! See below for our list of scheduled Big Sweep cleanups across Wake County for spring Most events are open to the public while others are private and organized by schools, youth groups, and companies for their volunteers only. To volunteer, contact the Zone Captain to pre-register the volunteers in your party and to obtain more information about the site and its appropriateness for different age groups. Each site's Zone Captain will provide trash bags, gloves, data cards, and a liability waiver to be signed by all participants. Please dress for the weather and put safety first! Important Note: Big Sweep cleanups may be re-scheduled due to severe weather. Wake County Big Sweep is coordinated by Wake Soil & Water Conservation District and made possible by Wake County and our partnering Zone Captains from various agencies, businesses, and organizations who care enough about clean water to lead volunteers in taking direct, positive action. SATURDAY MARCH 5, 2016 Richland Creek and Richland Lake in western Raleigh ~~ VOLUNTEERS WELCOME! 9:00 am-12:00 Noon Join the Richland Creek Stream Watch! Meet at 9:00am at the Loblolly Trail Head parking lot on E. Stephen Stroud Way (off Edwards Mill Road by Arena) in west Raleigh. Cleanup will be from 9:00 am-12 pm. Supplies & instructions will be provided. Help monitor the health of Richland Creek and pick up trash within walking distance for Big Sweep. We may also carpool to pick up trash at another location on Richland Creek. Bring drinking water and snacks. Wear sunscreen, hat, long pants, sturdy shoes that can get wet, and a rain jacket if rain is forecast. Questions? SUNDAY MARCH 6, 2016 NOTE: This is a Sunday afternoon! NEW HILL SOUTH WAKE COUNTY Harris Lake at Harris Lake County Park ~~ VOLUNTEERS WELCOME! 12:00 pm-3:00 pm. Meet at 12:00 pm in front of the park office. Volunteers will collect trash along Holleman Road to prevent litter from reaching Harris Lake (age 10+) or inside the park along the shore (minimum age 6.) Please wear sturdy shoes or boots. Gloves and trash bags will be provided. Volunteers will work until 3:00 pm. Minors and students must be accompanied by an adult. Groups with minors must complete waivers prior to the event. Minimum age for children is 6 years old. Please register in advance by calling the park office at Directions: Take Highway 1 South to Exit 89 - New Hill Road. Park is 3 miles on the right.

South Lake Community Club House: Meet at 9:00 am in the pool parking lot to to clean the creek and greenway. Gloves, trash bags and data cards will be provided. Volunteers from the public are invited to join the River Guardian Foundation and Umstead Coalition in cleaning up the lakes and trails of Umstead State Park. Gloves, trash bags, and data cards will be provided. Volunteers are invited to a nature presentation by a Park Ranger, a water quality presentation by the River Guardian Foundation, followed by hands-on citizen scientist sampling and construction of fishing line disposal containers! Volunteers 8 years and up are welcome. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Volunteers must pre-register! Minors and high school students must be accompanied by an adult. Groups with minors must complete waivers prior to the event. Meet at 9:00 am at Boat Rental Tower to clean up the shore of Lake Crabtree and its connecting creeks. Gloves, trash bags and data cards will be provided. Cleanup continues until 12 noon. Volunteers will learn why it s important to educate others about litter. Prizes will be raffled! Minors and high school students must be accompanied by an adult (does not have to be child s guardian.) Groups with minors must complete waivers prior to the event. Pre-registration is required. Town of Garner garners 2015 Big Sweep Excellence Award! Congratulations Zone Captains Katie Spencer & Jaclyn Sumner!! Because they have consistently conducted fall and spring Big Sweep cleanups for many years, the Town of Garner was awarded the 2015 Big Sweep Excellence Award by Wake Soil and Water Conservation District Board of Supervisors at their 50 th Anniversary Conservation Awards Celebration on December 3, Hundreds of volunteers are engaged in removing tons of unsightly litter from the environment by two Zone Captains from two Garner Departments: Jaclyn Sumner in Engineering and Katie Spencer from Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources. Kendrick Mayes from Parks Marketing and Events also assists his town s two Big Sweep Zone Co-Captains. Since Fall of 2006, Town of Garner has engaged a total of 623 volunteers in removing 7,457 pounds of litter from downtown Garner, and debris from White Deer and Lake Benson Parks. The removal of trash improves Lake Benson which is an important drinking water reservoir for Garner and Raleigh, as well as Swift Creek, one of Wake County s largest tributaries to the Neuse River. Zone Captains are instrumental in making Wake County Big Sweep happen and we are grateful for their commitment to this program! Thank you for volunteering for Wake County Big Sweep!
