1 BURLINGTON AREA 2016 CANOE CAMP POOL SESSION: APRIL 2, 2016 CAMP: JUNE 3-5, One of the Area s most eagerly anticipated events is fast approaching. The annual Burlington Area Canoe Camp, to be held this year from June 3 rd to 5 th at Camp Wheeler near Haliburton, is an opportunity for Scouts to learn valuable canoe skills in a controlled environment, and from experienced instructors. One of the overall objectives of this event is to cover off most of the requirements for the Paddling Challenge badge, as well as building competencies for several stages of the Paddling Outdoor Adventure Skills. And, of course, it s a ton of fun! The cost for the event will be $95 per person (Youth & Scouter). This includes all food, camp fees, accommodation, canoe rental and camp badges. This event is divided into two sessions as follows: MANDITORY POOL SESSION This will be held on Saturday April 2, from 3:00pm to 7:00pm at Aldershot Community Pool (next to Aldershot High School at 50 Fairwood Place West). In order to cover all the requirements and competencies, we intend to do as much of the theory, water and canoe work in advance of the camp. This will allow us to spend as much time at Camp actually out on the water. Scouts should be prepared to learn, and have fun in the pool. The last half hour of the session will be for closing remarks and a PIZZA Snack (note: Pizza may be limited to those that pre-register)! We also expect to have some freeswimming time. Each participant must bring a properly fitting Personal Flotation Device (PFD), which is approved by Transport Canada. If you don t have your own, or can t borrow one, let a leader know and we will try to arrange one for you. Scouts will be wearing their PFD s at all times at the pool. The information to be covered in the session is available in the Water Activities Manual (available at as well as in the Paddling Outdoor Adventure skills document at Each participant should study these materials prior to the pool session. ALL SCOUTS ATTENDING THE CANOE CAMP MUST ATTEND THE POOL SESSION. Any Scouter who would like to help in delivering the program, or who has questions on the pool session, please contact Scouter Colin Ballantyne at CANOE CAMP The real fun comes at the June 3 rd to 5 th camp held at Camp Wheeler. Camp Wheeler is located on Lake Kabakwa off of Highway 35 between Minden & Dorset in the Haliburton Highlands and run by 26th Hamilton. Paddling Level: Participants at this level will be staying at Wheeler s base camp all weekend. Since the youth will be sleeping in cabins, only sleeping bags and air or foam mattresses are required. Senior Level Paddling / Light Weight Camping: Those more experienced paddlers, who attended the camp last year but aren t going on the out trip, will have the chance to spend Saturday night camping on the island in the middle of the lake. These youth will require tents for the overnight stay. Spots for the island camp are limited, and will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Advanced Tripping: Participants at this level will be going on an overnight canoe trip. This trip will include portaging of canoes, packs, etc. They leave early Friday night and return to camp on Sunday for

2 lunch. Additional camping gear will be required by these youth ie: tents, stoves, water purifiers, etc. Participation in the out trip will be limited to 18 youth and 10 leaders. Participation in the overnight trip is at the discretion of the outtripper, however it is recommended that Out trip participants should have attended a previous Canoe Camp! Food Allergies: Those youth with special food needs should bring their own and arrangements can be made for its preparation. Contact the Camp Chief to discuss food rebate options. Tents: There is an option to use tents if you wish for a limited number of persons. If a maximum number of youth apply for cabins (and we were close last year), it may be necessary to ask leaders to use tents. Scouters should bring a few tents as a precaution. Youth sleeping out on the island or on the out trip will require tents. Canoes: One canoe will be required for every 2 participants, and is included in the camp cost. P.F.D. s: You are responsible for providing your own Personal Flotation device, Transport Canada approved, and of correct fit for each participant. Bailers & Whistles: Each participant will also be required to provide a bleach bottle bailer and 2 m of rope, and a pealess whistle (Fox 40 work well). Swimming Ability: You are responsible for determining the swimming abilities of your group. All non or weak swimmers should be brought to the attention of the instructors. Arrival / Departure Time: Please do not plan on arriving before 7:00 pm to allow time for the Wheeler Camp Staff to arrive from Hamilton. Weather permitting; camp should end around 1:30pm on Sunday. Health and Permission Forms: Having copies of the member details report / registration form containing medical information for all participants is your responsibility. Extra copies will be required for the Out Trip, as will a Category 3 Permission Form. Volunteers: Volunteers will be required at the camp to help supervise the out trips, the island camp, and to help with the instruction. 3 rd Year Cub Scouts: Cub Scouts that would be moving to Scouts in the fall can participate in BASE CAMP ONLY provided they register as guests of an attending Scout Troop and have attended the pool session. They will be camping as members of that Troop for the weekend, and the Troop Scouters will be responsible to ensure the youth have the proper background and preparation for the event. Deadline: We have limited space for this camp, so register your Troop early to avoid disappointment. 3 DIRECTIONS TO CANOE CAMP The route to Camp Wheeler is as follows: QEW to Toronto, then take either the 403 bypass or 427 to Hwy 401 East. Exit at Hwy 400 North and continue north to Barrie. At Barrie, follow Hwy 11 North through Orillia and Gravenhurst to Bracebridge. At Bracebridge exit at Hwy 118 East to Carnarvon and turn left at Hwy 35. On Hwy 35 North you will pass through Halls Lake, and then Saskatchewan Lake will be on your right, begin to watch for the camp sign on the left hand side of the road (26TH HAMILTON SCOUTS). If you reach the narrows (Lake Kushog), you've gone too far.

4 CAMP WHEELER UNDERSTANDINGS CAMP WHEELER is owned and operated by the 26th Hamilton Scout Group. The camp fees are used for the operation of Camp Wheeler. All capital expenditures are met through the Group Committee fund raising, by the funds raised by our Ladies' Auxiliary, and any donations made to our Group. Invitations are extended to friends of our Scout group, when room is available to attend Camp Wheeler with us. RULES AND REGULATIONS While in camp, the word of the Camp Leaders is LAW, and must be obeyed. Any disregard of the rules as set out by the Leader's will result in discipline, if severe enough you will be sent home and will not be asked to attend at Camp Wheeler again. Malicious damage or vandalism will also not be tolerated, and any costs for the repair or replacement will be the responsibility of the youth's family. The waterfront is under strict rules, and may only be used at designated times, with Supervision. When swimming "The Buddy System", where all swimmers are joined in a group of two or three must stay together while at or in the water, is used at all times. Swimmers may not enter the swimming areas until the lifeguards allow you to. Canoes and boats may only be used under Supervision, at designated times and life jackets must be worn. Over the years, the trails have worn down exposing roots and rocks, so we ask that there be no running on the trails and shoes must be worn at all times to prevent injuries. Full Uniform is to be worn to and from Camp Wheeler, at Chapel services, usually during evening meal, and at any time designated by your Camp Leaders. Adequate menus are planned for the camp. So, there is NO need for "food parcels" from home for your child's sole enjoyment. Home baked goods though may be brought with the youth and be used as snacks and desserts for all or the campers at Camp Wheeler, please give them to the Camp Leaders upon arrival. If any goodies arrive for your youth's personal use, they are held for the youth until they are leaving camp. Your cooperation in this regard will be very much appreciated. Personal Health Forms and equipment lists will be given to all who register for camp. Personal Health Forms must be completed not more than two weeks prior to your leaving for camp and MUST BE BROUGHT TO CAMP WITH THE CAMPER and given to the leader in charge upon arriving at Camp Wheeler. Also any medication that your youth requires must be given to the leaders upon arrival at Camp Wheeler. All medication is stored in Bryant Hall and given to your child as to your instructions. It is hoped that the parents will try to arrange car pools. The approximate distance to Camp Wheeler is 300km and should take about 3 1/2 to 4 hours travel time.
