1 November 2016 Nature Film Series: Eyewitness Seashore from 10:00-11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 5th. Ever wondered what happens to a crab that loses its claw? Find out how this animal and other creatures survive the demanding conditions of our seashores. From crashing waves and blasting winds to calm tide pools, discover what makes our coastlines so alluring to wildlife and humans around the world. After the film, LEC staff will be on hand to bring out some of our native saltwater invertebrates for further discussion. Colors of Fall Tree Creations from 2:00-3:00 p.m. Saturday, November 5th. Why do some leaves change colors in the fall? Bring your family and friends to the LEC to learn more about these seasonal color variations in nature. Using the information discussed, staff will guide you through the process of how to create your own mini fall tree craft out of natural and recycled materials. How to Be a Successful Seed Saver from 2:00-3:30 p.m. Sunday, November 6th. Saving seeds is a great way to preserve your favorite tastes, scents and colors. It is also a great way to save heritage and endangered species of flowers and vegetables while saving money. Learn which varieties of your favorite plants may be more disease and pest resistant, and how it s possible to develop new varieties of plants by cross breeding. Learn some seed saving techniques, tips and tricks needed to get started by joining Master Gardener, Ed Williams for this program.

2 Turtle Explorers from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Saturday, November 12th. Calling all turtle lovers ages 4 through 8. Ever wondered what makes a tortoise different from a turtle? If so, we have a program planned just for you! Listen along as we read a turtle themed book, venture out on an exploratory hike and make a nature themed craft. Program supplies are limited to 15 participants so preregistration is required. Gifts that Keep On Giving from 2:30-4:00 p.m. Sunday, November 13 th. The holidays are coming soon. LEC staff will guide you on how to use some fun techniques that will help you reuse, recycle and add a personal creative touch to the gifts you give. Participants will create several unique take-home gift tags during this classroom workshop. Space is limited for this program so preregistration is required. Sunset over Lyonia Preserve hike from 4:30-5:30 p.m. Thursday November 17th. Wrap up your day with this fun outdoor exploration. LEC staff will guide participants as we embark on a hike into the preserve to enjoy the view of an autumn sunset over Lyonia Preserve. Participants should wear closed toed shoes, bring water, a flashlight and be prepared to hike on unpaved sugar sand trails for this adventure.

3 Wetlands & Wildlife from 9:30-11:00 a.m. Friday, November 18th. Wetlands are home to a wide diversity of wildlife. These areas can be a haven for many insects, reptiles, amphibians and birds. LEC staff and West Volusia Audubon Board Member Eli Schaperow will lead this exploratory hike around the water and trail areas of Audubon Park in search of wildlife. Participants are required to wear closed-toed shoes and dress appropriately for weather. Please meet LEC staff at the main entrance to the park 10 minutes prior to start of program. Audubon Park is located at the corner of Doyle Rd & Lush Ln, Deltona, FL Outdoor Holiday Scavenger Hunt Hike from 10:00-11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 19th. Bring your family and friends to participate in this seasonal guided outdoor scavenger hunt. Come cache in on this no experience necessary leisurely stroll through Lyonia Preserve. Be prepared to see birds, butterflies, trees and at the end you might even find some hidden holiday themed cache. Participants should bring water, wear closed toed shoes, and be prepared to hike on unpaved sugar sand trails. This program is recommended for beginner hikers ages 10 and up. Winter Wonder Creations from 2:00-3:30 p.m. Saturday, November 19th. As cooler weather months approach, use the change in weather to help inspire you to make winter-themed crafts. LEC staff will guide you through the steps to make snowy trees, terra cotta pot snowman and other creations. This interactive

4 program is recommended for children ages 7 and up. Supplies are limited to 20 program participants so preregistration is required. Popcorn and a Movie- Sinkholes-Buried Alive from 2:30-3:30 p.m. Sunday, November 20th. When carbon dioxide in the air dissolves in rainwater it forms a weak acid that attacks limestone and other water-soluble rocks, riddling them with holes like Swiss cheese. This PBS film is filled with compelling eyewitness video of dramatic collapses and follows scientists as they explore the underlying forces behind these natural disasters. Popcorn will be provided free of charge. Candy, snacks, soda and bottled water are available for purchase. This program is recommended for adults. Tiny Trekkers: Sleepyheads from 10:00-11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 26th. Join us as we read a book about sleepy animal babies. Afterwards, we will head out to the preserve for a short trek and make a craft to take home. This program is recommended for children ages 2-5. Participants should bring water and wear closed toed shoes. Our trek will be on unpaved sugar sand trails. Manatees in Motion from 1:00-2:00 p.m. Saturday, November 26th. November is Manatee Awareness Month! When winter approaches and water temperatures drop, these majestic creatures cannot tolerate the colder water temperatures so they head to warmer waters like our fresh water springs. LEC staff will discuss the importance of these animals, where they live, what they eat and why we should learn about what we can do preserve them.

5 Trim the Fat Hike in Lyonia Preserve from 2:30-4:00 p.m. Sunday, November 27th. Feel like you ve overdone it with all those Thanksgiving goodies? Join LEC education staff on an extended guided hike over the hills of Lyonia Preserve as we burn some calories and learn about the importance of scrub habitat. Participants should bring water, wear closed toed shoes and be prepared to hike for 2 miles on unpaved, sugar sand trails. Guided Scrub Strolls at 9 a.m. every Monday and Friday in November. LEC Staff will lead these guided hikes in Lyonia Preserve. Strolls will be offered every Monday and Friday from 9:00 a.m. -10:00 a.m. Participants should bring water, wear closed toed shoes, and be prepared to hike on unpaved sugar sand trails.
