1 November 2018 Tiny Trekkers I m a Turkey! from 10:00-11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 3rd. Follow along with LEC volunteers as we read a book about a turkey and his life in a large flock. Then take a short hike (weather permitting) and create a take home craft. This program is recommended for children ages 2-5. A Walk Through Time Hike in Lyonia Preserve from 2:30-4:00 p.m. Saturday, November 3rd. Join LEC staff as we learn fun facts about the history of Lyonia Preserve on this guided hike. We will be hiking approximately 2 miles on unpaved sugar sand trails and will be visiting the large wetland in the preserve. Participants should dress appropriately for the weather, wear closed-toed shoes and bring water. Popcorn & a Movie-Shark Mountain from 2:00-3:00 p.m. Sunday, November 4th. Travel along with Howard and Michele Hall, two of the world s leading underwater filmmakers in this exciting adventure. Thousands of sharks hunt along the volcanic reefs of Cocos Island in the Pacific, which has become known as Shark Mountain. The waters around this tiny outpost are filled with ocean life so rich and diverse that the island and a twelve mile zone all around it has been designated a Costa Rican National Park and World Heritage Site. Popcorn will be provided free of charge. Drinks and snacks will be available for purchase.
2 Super Sharks from 3:00-4:00 p.m. Sunday, November 4th. Sharks are an important part of the marine ecology and help keep our oceans healthy and clean. In this presentation you ll hear about the importance of sharks and how we can help protect these fierce apex predators of the sea. Afterwards participants will explore some hands-on activities and make a take-home craft. Bring your camera to capture some fun photos in our shark photo booth. This program is appropriate for ages 6-adult. When It Rains It Stores from 10:00-11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 10th. Rainwater harvesting is the accumulation and storage of rainwater for later use. We will discuss various methods of rain water storage, such as rain barrels, rain gardens and cisterns. You ll learn how to size your systems to meet your needs, what you ll need to get started, and some of the ways you can use the water you collect. The class is an introduction to Rainwater Harvesting. Minature Pumpkin Planters from 2:00-3:00 p.m. Saturday, November 10th. Looking for a unique fall decoration? Then the succulent pumpkin garden is for you! Using succulent cuttings and other natural materials, LEC staff will guide participants through the steps to create a succulent garden on top of a miniature pumpkin. We will also discuss how the succulents take on a life of their own and how to keep your beautiful miniature pumpkin garden thriving even after the holiday season ends. Price is $5.00 per pumpkin (not participant) and preregistration is required.
3 Turkey Talk from 2:00-3:00 p.m. Sunday, November 11th. November is a fantastic time to talk turkey! Did you know a turkey s call can be heard from a mile away, and that they are able to swim? Learn more about this local bird in a classroom presentation given by Naturalist Ed Northey. Following the presentation, participants can make a Thanksgiving card using recycled materials to take home. Critter Corner 11:00-11:30 p.m. Thursday, November 15th. Have you ever wondered why snakes shed their skin, or wanted to know the difference between alligators and crocodiles? Join one of the LEC s experienced Animal Care volunteers to learn the answers to these questions. This program is recommended for all ages and we encourage participants to ask questions, explore and have fun! Sunset over Lyonia Hike from 4:30-5:30 p.m. Thursday, November 15th. Break up your work week or wrap up your day with this fun outdoor exploration. LEC staff will guide participants as we embark on a hike into Lyonia Preserve to enjoy the picturesque view of an autumn sunset. Participants should wear closed toed shoes, bring water, a flashlight and be prepared to hike on unpaved sugar sand trails for this adventure.
4 Eco-Buggy Brunch and Learn from 9:3011:30a.m. Saturday, November 17th. Learn about the importance of scrub habitat as LEC and Explore Volusia staff guide you on this leisurely Eco-Buggy ride through Lyonia Preserve. Participants should dress appropriately for the weather, bring water and keep an eye out for scrub jays, gopher tortoises and other wildlife. After the ride, we ll head inside the LEC to learn about a native animal while enjoying the brunch provided by The Friends of Lyonia Environmental Center. Please wear closed toe shoes and be prepared for the weather. Fall Upcycled Creations from 2:00-3:30 p.m. Saturday, November 17th. The holidays are coming soon! LEC staff and volunteers will guide you through various techniques to help you reuse, recycle and add a personal touch to the crafty creations you ll make for the holidays. Participants will create several unique take-home items during this classroom workshop. Space is limited for this program and preregistration is req uired.
5 BBC Earth: Life Nature Film Series from 2:00-4:00 p.m. Sunday, November 18th. From BBC and Discovery Channel, producers of Planet Earth and The Blue Planet: Seas of Life, comes the newest landmark natural history series, Life. Four years in the making,filmed over 3000 days, with breathtaking new high definition filming techniques, Life presents incredible stories from the frontiers of the natural world. Packed with excitement and entertainment, this film series, narrated by Oprah Winfrey, captures unprecedented and astonishingly beautiful sequences. Watch as the film crews capture the extraordinary tactics animals and plants have developed to stay alive. Popcorn will be provided free. Drinks and snacks are available for purchase. Jay Walking from 9:30-11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 24th. This program spotlights our threatened Florida scrub jay. You ll start by learning their calls and interesting facts about their lifestyle. Then you ll take a stroll with LEC staff into the preserve to immerse yourself in their habitat in hopes of spotting a scrub jay. Binoculars and cameras are suggested. Closed toe shoes are required and be prepared for the weather. Creature Feature: Sea Urchins, Sea Stars & Sea Cucumbers from 2:00-3:00 p.m. Saturday, November 24th. Do all sea urchins look the same? What is the difference between sea urchins and sea cucumbers? Join one of the LEC s experienced Animal Care volunteers to learn the answers to these questions and more facts about the unique sea creatures. This program is recommended for all ages and we encourage participants to ask questions, explore and have fun!
6 The Missing Piece from 2:00-3:30 p.m. Sunday, November 25th. When you lose a jig-saw puzzle piece or two you can t complete the puzzle. Don t be puzzled about what to do with your old pieces, staff will show you how to up-cycle them into beautiful ornaments for the holidays. Staff will show you some different techniques you can use to make a take home ornament to keep for yourself or give as a gift. Pre-registration is required for this program as space and materials are limited. Guided Scrub Strolls at 9 am every Monday & Friday in November except November 23rd. LEC staff will lead these guided hikes in Lyonia Preserve. Strolls will be offered every Monday & Friday from 9:00 am 10:00 am. It is strongly suggested that participants wear closed toed shoes, bring water, and be prepared to hike on unpaved sugar sand trails. Registration is required and can be done by calling (386) ext. # Please arrive 10 minutes before the program to sign in.
