1 Summer Camp 2018 Make the most of your summer through discovery and exciting fun! This summer is better than ever! Welcome the Tallahassee Museum s 2018 summer camp! As a nationally accredited history and natural science museum, we are excited to bring science and the arts, to life through engaging hands-on activities. From encounters with wildlife to making music and food, we are geared up to offer your child an enriching summer camp experience. Our integrated approach implements creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, and communication into each day s lesson plan. We have invited talented teachers from across the district to share their knowledge with our campers! Staff: All camp teachers are experienced educators with current level 2 federal background screens, and CPR/First Aid certification. Grade Level: Grade completed as of June 1, Registration: Campers are registered on a first-come, first-served basis. Pricing: Pre-K: $160 members/ $170 nonmembers K-1 st : $160 members/ $170 non-members 2 nd -4 th : $195 members/ $205 non-members 5 th -8 th : $195 members/ $205 non-members Deposits: $30 non-refundable deposit for each camp session must be received with a registration form before your child is put on the camp roster. Remaining balance is due 14 days prior to camp. Discount for Siblings: Full fee for first child, $10 off camp fee for each additional sibling registered for the same week of camp. Hours: Full Day Camps: 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday Friday Extended Hours: Full Day Camps: 7:45-8:45 a.m. and 4:45-5:45 p.m.; Fee: $35/week Field Trips: Pre-K- No fieldtrips K-1 st grade- No field trips 2 nd -8 th grade - Tuesday & Thursday Necessary Daily Items: Closed toe shoes are required. Campers may be sent home if they wear open-toed shoes. Sunscreen Insect repellant Refillable water bottle 2 snacks If the forecast calls for rain, please send a rain poncho or rain jacket. Camp Lunch Program: The Museum's Trail Break Café offers a lunch program for K-8 th grade campers when they are on grounds, not on fieldtrip days. Lunch order forms are enclosed in this packet, or you may find them on our website under summer camp forms. Pre-K campers must bring their own lunch. Tree to Tree Adventure Camps: Children must be at least 41 tall. Waivers must be filled out online by a parent or guardian at no more than 24 hours prior to the Monday of camp, OR filled out manually the day of the camp. Children tall may use the TREEmendous Adventures Course, $15 per child. Children at least 54 tall may use the Canopy Crossing Course, $25 per child. ****Fees are in addition to camp fee****

Early Childhood camp is designed for year old children who have not completed Kindergarten to explore, learn, create and have fun while continuing growth in all skill areas needed upon entering Kindergarten. Each week, children will visit the Wild Florida Trail, farm animals, sinkhole, nature trail, and play ground, as well as attend at least 2 animal encounters. Each day children will have a balance between outdoor exploration and time to hydrate and cool off indoors on those hot summer days. Campers must bring their own lunch to Pre-K Camp There will be two full day classes with 10 available openings per class. Registration is on a first come, first serve basis. We are looking forward to seeing you this summer! THEME DATE DESCRIPTION June 4-8, 2018: Speckles, Dots, Spots & Stripes- Campers will explore how colors, shapes and other characteristics help animals hide and survive through games, outdoor play and crafts. June 11-15, 2018: Edible Tales- This camp is all about the farm. The recipes prepared have been approved by the Museum s very own farm animals. We will be making some fun farm enrichment projects for the animals as well as crafts. June 18-22, 2018: Space, Sun & Star Power-Campers will go where no kid has gone before! We will explore the power of the sun, make a sundial, sun-dried treats and learn all about stars and meteors. June 25-29, 2018: Magical Mammals- We will learn all about the mammals that live on the Museum grounds as well as visit the animal kitchen to see what s on the menu? Can you name the only marsupial that lives in North America and at the museum? We will have fun, investigating, crafting, hiking and just old fashioned playing. July 2-6, 2018: This Class Is For The Birds (No camp Wednesday due to the holiday)- Camp fee is prorated): See how many beautiful birds live in our area. We will learn about a couple of very fun different feathered friends and make some fun treats. Camp is pro-rated: $126 members/ $136 nonmembers July 9-13, 2018: Nature Can Get Sticky- Campers will enjoy learning about slimy worms, sticky webs, animal tongues and create some concoctions that will leave their hands ooey, gooey, sticky! July 16-20, 2018: B-utiful Adventures- Each day campers will have a new adventure that starts with the letter B. Be There or Be square. July 23-27, 2018: Cool Ice Age Adventures- We will stay cool learning all about the animals that roamed our through our area during the Ice Age. We will create a book full of fun textures, play and enjoy the museum resources. July 30- August 3, 2018: Wonderful Water- Campers will have fun learning about the animals that live in fresh and saltwater. We will make a t-shirt with a real fish using the Japanese art form of Gyotaku and end the week with a water party.

All K-8 th grade camps will study the same themes, though camp lessons are age-appropriate depending upon the camp grade level. 2 nd -8 th grade campers will field trip to destinations that fit within the theme of the camp. Field trips occur Tuesdays and Thursdays of each week. Camps June 4-8, 2018: Ecology Explorers- Campers will explore the great outdoors throughout the week and have a chance to explore the tiny life of the pond, as well as the organisms living on the land. Campers will have a chance to study animals through observation, have a lesson from our Museum s Naturalist, and learn the importance of their outdoor surroundings. 2nd-4th grade & 5th-8thgrade camps will fieldtrip to ecologically significant locations in the area. June 11-15, 2018: Zoo Crew- Campers will have a chance to contribute to the Museum s animals! In this hands-on camp, campers may work in an animal habitat, create enrichment items for the animals, assist with making animal diets, and learn a few important presentation facts about a specific critter at the Museum. 2nd-4th grade & 5th-8th grade will fieldtrip to regional animal rehabilitation facilities or zoos. Campers must arrive to the Museum by 7:45am on Tuesday & Thursday for the field trip. June 18-22, 2018: Daring Adventures- We ll spend the week learning new ways to build strong team dynamics, as well have a great time exploring the Tree to Tree ropes course and adventurous treks around the Museum and surrounding forestry land. 2 nd -5 th grade camps will fieldtrip to a few of the region s outdoor recreation locations. An additional fee will apply: TREEmendous Adventures course is an additional $15 per child; Canopy Crossing course is an additional $25 per child. Parents must complete the Tree-to-Tree e-zwaiver no more than 24 hours prior to the Monday of camp. June 25-29, 2018: Kitchen Chemistry- Fermentation, raw creations, and old-fashioned recipes in and on the woodstove! Campers will learn a variety of ways that people around the world prepare food, and the science behind it. Each day will be a new exploration in kitchen chemistry. 2nd-4th grade & 5th-8th grade camps will enjoy 2 food-filled field trips! July 2-6, 2018 (NO CAMP on July 4th): Sea Stories- Campers will understand the relationship between humans and the ocean as well as learn stories and songs of various cultures that have been passed down through time. They will also learn a bit about the exciting creatures that live in the sea that have ignited the interest of humans for years! 2nd-4th grade & 5th-8thgrade camps will fieldtrip to the coast. Camp is prorated July 9-13, 2018: Natural Disasters- This camp explores volcanoes, earthquakes, sinkholes, hurricanes, tornadoes, and landslides. Campers will make volcanoes, learn a few things about hydrogeology, plate tectonics, extreme weather, and so much more! 2nd-4th grade & 5th-8thgrade camps will field trip to 2 locations where they will learn a little more about natural disasters. July 16-20, 2018: Zoo Crew- Campers will have a chance to contribute to the Museum s animals! 4 July 23-27, 2018: Fantastic Flight- ZIP CAMP: Birds, bats and insects have mastered flight. Flying squirrels glide and spiders use silk balloons. Let your imagination soar, investigate airborne animals, and venture into the trees for a Tree-to-Tree zipline adventure. 2nd-5th grade camps will fieldtrip to a few of the region s outdoor recreation locations. An additional fee will apply: TREEmendous Adventures course is an additional $15 per child; Canopy Crossing course is an additional $25 per child. Parents must complete the Tree-to-Tree e-zwaiver no more than 24 hours prior to the Monday of camp. July 30- August 3, 2018: Exhibit Explorations-This camp is chocked full of exciting behind the scenes adventures. Campers will learn the ins and outs of how museums design exhibits! 2nd -4th grade & 5th-8 th grade camps will enjoy 2 fieldtrips to some of the region s other locations that house exciting exhibits. August 6-10, 2018: Water Wizards- Water is essential for all life to exist! Everything we do in this camp will involve water! Water explorations, experiments, games, play, and songs! On this underwater journey we will discuss where we find our water, what we use water for, what water looks like on a microscopic scale, how we can conserve and protect water, and have fun playing with water! Your child will wave good bye to you and plunge into some soaking fun! 2nd-4th grade & 5th-8th grade will fieldtrip to a few of our region s bodies of water!

7 From time to time, the Tallahassee Museum, or the media, will take photos of our programs, which includes camps, preschool and workshops for publicity reasons. These photos are used in our newsletter and brochures, as well as local newspapers and other publications to advertise/promote the Museum and its programs. For this reason, we ask that you to sign the photo release below in order to use the photos where your child is identifiable. If you have any questions, please contact the Director of Education at ext PHOTO RELEASE I give permission for any photographs taken of my child,, during programs at the Tallahassee Museum to be used in any present or future publication or advertisement about the Tallahassee Museum. 8 9 IMPORTANT RULES FOR CAMPERS We understand that campers are excited to come to camp. While our objective is for all campers to have a fun learning experience, we must be sure that everyone is aware of the rules that are expected of them while they are at camp. Please review these with your child prior to camp. 1. Show respect to all campers, staff, Museum guests, exhibits, wildlife, property, and the Museum itself. 2. Keep your hands, feet, head and other body parts to yourself. Fighting, hitting, theft, or destruction of property WILL NOT BE TOLERATED. 3. Appropriate language should be used at all times. 4. Cooperation and participation in group activities is expected of campers. 5. Campers must stay with our individual camp group. 6. Campers must always have a buddy when going places at the Museum or when on field trips. 7. Campers must never leave a camp group unless the teacher gives permission. 8. Campers must keep shoes ON their feet at all times. 9. Campers must follow the instructions of our camp teachers. ELECTRONIC DEVICES ****If campers bring electronic devices, they must be put away until camp teacher gives approval of their use. The Museum holds no responsibility for any items that may be lost or stolen.
