2 NOTES FROM JOHN John Buck President, CCB My tenure as President of the CCB is coming to an end in February. I have enjoyed nearly every minute and it is time for new leadership. The elected CCB officer positions, including the position of President, are up for election. If you would like to run for office, please notify the CCB. It most certainly has been a rewarding three years for me. What I enjoyed most as President: 1. You. Our members. Getting to know nearly all our 200+ members. Time before and after monthly meetings was limited but I tried my best to reach out to those I didn t know. I thank you for your continued interest and support of the CCB over the years. 2. The Board of Directors. The CCB is led by the President, but is managed by the Board of Directors. It is a group effort by the Officers and Directors. In addition, there is a dedicated group of members who attend each and every Board meeting because they love and care about the club. It is unique and special to have this kind of support. 3. The programs and speakers. During my tenure, Don Martin and currently, Richard Thomson as VP have done a spectacular job securing dynamic speakers for our meetings. This is not an easy task as you may imagine. The variety of subject matter has been exceptional. 4. The social aspect. Attending and leading workshops and field trips has been particularly rewarding for me. It s a great opportunity to learn more about you as photographers. 5. Sharing ideas and teaching. One of the roles I assumed as President was to lead by example. I accomplished this by conducting my own workshops and helped on several others. Occasionally I entered the competitions. One idea I brought forward was to brand the CCB with a logo, communication material and shirts. Another was the concept of Capture Brevard and now Capture Florida. 6. The monthly meetings. It s no secret I am fairly comfortable talking to an audience. I really enjoyed creating my little intro slide shows as entertainment and also to make the necessary announcements. I m not going away! I will be on hand to help the new President ease into the position. The strange part will be sitting in the audience without a microphone! ELECTIONS! There are 5 positions on the Board of Directors that are open to any CCB member in good standing (you ve paid your dues). Officially and currently, the Board consists of ten positions. The voting Officers are the President, VP, Secretary, Treasurer and PR/Communications. The remaining Directors are Competitions, Webmaster, Newsletter, Membership and Field Trips. The Officers are elected and the Directors are appointed by the President. If you are interested in helping shape the future of this club, then see a Board member and get your name on the ballot before January 22, The election will take place at our regular monthly meeting on February 5. The remainder of 2018 is eventful with a great November meeting featuring nature and bird photographer Jack Rogers. Come to the meeting and get inspired! The migratory birds will arrive soon! On November 3rd our annual bus trip is scheduled to downtown St. Pete with a stop for some incredible architecture photography at Florida Polytechnic University. Chihuly, Dali, and a quaint downtown trolley await you. Last, but not least, the Annual Print Competition and Dinner. This is the biggest event of the year for the CCB. Everyone brings a homemade dish, the venue is decorated in a festive holiday theme, door prizes are laid out and best of all an incredible display of the best photography from our members. Awards are given in both Black & White and Color in several categories. It s the best $15 you can spend all year ($20 at the door). See you there! John 2
3 NOVEMBER 13 PROGRAM ~ JACK ROGERS JACK ROGERS REMINDER! Due to the fact the Eau Gallie Civic Center is a voting venue on November 6, our monthly meeting will be held November 13. APC entries are due at the November 13th monthly meeting also! 11 ROBERT SCHMIDT PHOTOS Someone asked me how I did what I did to make my photograph, ah, well, hmm, a little unusual. So I took the time to make a few notes. I did not want to take up to much of your time, but what I do when I get started on a pix for the contest is summarized here. I just get in the groove with late night WFIT music and my photos. This is what I came up with in words: Processing Notes IMG 4003: I first used an "Edge Detect" filter and saved that image on a new Photoshop layer. Then converted a copy of that layer to Black and White, increasing the contrast until all gray was removed. I used the "Vivid" effect on the original color image and used the eraser tool "like a brush" to remove some of the "Age Lines" on the B&W layer before merging the layers and cropping the image. Processing Notes IMG 4087: This picture was almost a toss away because of the nasty looking background. I isolated the Guitar player and his instrument by masking to make the first layer. Then just his face on a second layer and his guitar and hands on a third layer. I worked colors and blended them to make the background. Contrast and saturation were increased with care to give texture to his shirt on the next layer. His facial features were next. I improved them a little with shadow on the left then added blue on the right temple to look like a spot light. I then softened and lightened his hands and guitar to shift the emphasis to his facial expression. Then I just flattened all good layers and cropped to 8x10. 11
