2 UNIT LEADERS - PLEASE READ THIS ENTIRE GUIDE We realize this is a lng dcument and printer ink is pricey but ALL UNITS SHOULD PRINT OUT AT LEAST ONE COPY OF THIS GUIDE This will be the 25th Campree f the Rancher West District. The Dates are May 26th, 27th and 28th. The lcatin is Camp Lassen! As usual, mst f the Cmpetitin events will center n the Trail t First Class requirements and all Patrl Leaders are expected t exercise active leadership f his patrl thrughut the cmpetitins. Last years frmat f allwing every Scut t cmpete at their wn level was met with verwhelming apprval, s we will cntinue n that track as fllws: Cmpetitin Challenges: Each Scut will select a challenge t cmplete, based upn his wn individual skill level fr a Cumulative Patrl Scre. There will be 5 statins: including First Aid, Knts & Lashings, Fire Building, Hnr yur flag, and Plant ID. Webels will wrk in their wn patrls & be given instructin as needed. Award Categries & Scring: Similar t last year. (details n pgs. 12 and 13) Afternn Games: Patrls, dens and adults are free t engage in sme r all f the additinal activities but are encuraged t stay tgether as they d s, and cheer their team mates n. Adults will have their wn activities Adults may accmpany patrls thrugh the rtatins as needed but are nt allwed t ffer help r advice t the Scuts during the cmpetitins. This year s Campree will be a crdinated effrt with all f the District s Trps and the Maidu Chapter f the Order f the Arrw prviding key leadership. THERE IS A LOT TO REMEMBER SO WE SUGGEST YOU USE A HIGHLIGHTER PEN TO MARK THE KEY POINTS YOU WANT TO PASS ON TO YOUR UNIT MEMBERS. Then get tgether with yur SPL and review the guide with him. Prmte participatin at yur unit meetings and start a sign up sheet right away. Ignite the excitement!!! Get the Patrls revved up t cmpete and bring the hnr ribbns back t brag abut. Practice the Trail t First Class Skills at yur meetings! Start unifrm inspectins, Make r spruce up the Patrl Flags, Practice the Patrl Yells! Registratin is $ FINAL nline reservatin DEADLINE is May 21st 2017 Register Online at Left side bar register fr an event Tur permits (nw called Tur Plans) are nt needed fr this activity. Be sure t d this early t give the Webels Families time t prepare. Remember BSA plicy requires ne adult fr every Webels Scut wh camps vernight. Get yur medical frms in rder. 1. 4 Campree Rules First and fremst, we expect that the Scut Oath and Law shall be bserved and upheld by all participants. Unit Adult Leaders; please d make sure yu understand and cmmunicate Campree Rules and Safety Issues t yur yuth befre arriving and thereafter as necessary. Please keep unit vehicles in designated areas nly. Please limit the gear as much as pssible. Scuts shuld carry their wn gear in backpacks frm the parking area t the campgrund. Use duffle bags if backpacks are nt available. One r Tw gear Trucks per Unit will be allwed t drive t the Unit Campsite fr lading and unlading heavy Trp gear nly, and will park in the main lt. Things t Avid and Steer Clear Of: All animals, Neighbring private prperty, n Swimming in the lake. N cutting any living r standing trees, shrubs, bushes r grasses. Think leave n trace camping. Fires Permitted. Trps are permitted t have camp fires within their respective campsites. Allwing fires are subject t change s please check in with the Campree HQ t make sure fires are still permitted Quiet hurs are 10PM t 6AM. Please respect these times. DO NOT rake up any pine needles r pine cnes. (aka DUFF). It greatly reduces dust. Leadership Infrmatin: Staff: Staff members are Order f the Arrw members, Eagle Scuts, Venture Crew, and Adults wh have vlunteered their time and resurces t help prvide a great prgram fr the Trps. If a prblem arises, please infrm any ne f them, they are there t help! Adult Leadership: Each Unit is t prvide 2 deep leadership (minimum) at all times during the Campree. Ideally, the adults are there as a resurce t their unit and shuld leave the running f the trp t the by leaders (as much as pssible). Webels: BSA rules fr Webels camping are 1 adult per Webels camper.

5 Safety Cncerns: As always with utdr adventures there are safety cncerns which must be addressed. The main hazards at this site are drwning, dehydratin, and injuries resulting frm falls such as sprained wrist and ankles etc. Dehydratin: N matter what the weather cnditins are, the Scuts will be ding a lt f hiking and activity. When bys are having fun, they dn t think t drink.dehydratin is ALWAYS a ptential prblem! Headaches are the first sign f this. Please advise ALL participants, Scuts and Adults t carry AND DRINK plenty f water! Terrain: The prperty includes a lake,. ABSOLUTELY NO GOING IN THE WATER. N running r hrse-play. Wearing sturdy Hiking Bts rather than shes will help avid ft and ankle injuries (safety first). N Tree Climbing Wildlife: There is lts f wildlife in the area including deer, bear, fx, raccn, pssum, snakes, and many thers. Live and let live; ALL animals including snakes are t be left alne Muntain Lins: Thugh very rarely seen, this is lin cuntry NO ONE shuld walk alne at any time. If a lin is seen, DO NOT RUN, Stay tgether, Make a lt f nise and yu wn t have any prblems. Ticks: Nt a majr issue, but be mindful f them. First Aid: A qualified medical fficer will be n duty at the Medical Ldge (Behind the Main Ldge) during the entire Campree. In the case f any accident requiring attentin, reprt immediately t the MEDICAL LODGE, n matter what time.

6 General Infrmatin Trp Gear: There is plenty f shade and ptable running water at this facility. Shade tarps, ez ups etc. (t fill with sand t weigh them dwn) Trp / Patrl Flags Dutch Oven(s) ptinal Glves, Shvels, hard rakes, Pick axe limb clippers, hand clippers, etc (fr brush clearing service prject) Every Scut shuld have glves and a tl. Medical Frms fr All in a binder All supplies necessary t run the afternn game yur Trp signed up t hst. Unifrms: Full Class A Unifrm is expected fr Check-In as well Mrning & Evening Flags and the Saturday Evening Campfire. During the events, a Trp tee shirt is acceptable... Extra pints. Fr creative Patrl Unifrm Accessry during cmpetitins. MARK ALL UNIFORMS & GEAR (TOOLS) ETC. WITH NAME Patrl Unifrm Accessry: Each Patrl can earn 10 additinal 10 pts fr wearing a Fun r Funky unifrm accessry. Every member f the Patrl must wear (r have) a matching theme item. Examples: feather in hat, pink walking sticks, rainbw she laces, matching face paint etc. Please keep it fun, clean, and apprpriate. Persnal Prperty: As with Unifrms, cmpasses, flashlights and ther persnal prperty lk very similar. PLEASE, MARK EVERYTHING WITH NAMES! YES, EVEN WATER BOTTLES! Weather: The weather at this time f year can be unpredictable. Be Prepared fr anything. The shw will g n rain r shine. Driving Directins: Apprximate time frm Central Chic is 50 minutes. Take Hwy 32, turn right n t Humbldt Rd and then left n t Scut Rd. Check in at the parking area between 5:00 and 7:00 pm.

7 Vehicles and Parking : Parking is limited t the areas directed as such by staff. Please Car Pl as much as pssible. A Maximum f tw Gear Trucks per Trp will be permitted t take heavy gear t campsites. All ther vehicles will be directed t park n arrival by a staff member. Trash Dispsal: Trps have tw ptins, either pack in and pack ut their trash, r dispse f it in the dumpster behind the ldge. Sanitatin / Water: Bathrms will be available. Please EMPHASIZE the need t keep them CLEAN. THIS YEAR WE HAVE ACCESS TO RUNNING POTABLE WATER. BRING YOUR OWN CONTAINERS TO FILL UP IF DESIRED. Camp Trading Pst: The OA will be running a Trading Pst selling drinks and snacks. We really appreciate the units supprting this effrt which financially supprts the csts f making ur ceremny cstumes, and transprtatin t unit events. Encurage everyne t bring a few dllars t help supprt the OAs fundraising effrts. Msquites: Always bthersme, bring repellant r lng pants and jackets fr the evening. Saturday Afternn Games: A variety f Afternn Games, will be ffered after the main cmpetitin events. There will als be a special SPL Challenge. Adults n the Cmpetitin Field:

8 Adults can tag alng but shuld remain quietly utside f the immediate cmpetitin area. As Camprees are patrl events; the OA is requesting that Adults DO NOT Cach r guide the Scuts. (unless there is a special needs yuth). Phtgraphers are asked t please fllw the same rules. Adults wh really want t help, PLEASE Call r Patrick at r scuting1036@cmcast.net t vlunteer! We have lts f things that yu culd d t help make this Campree the Best Ever! There will be several fun activities specifically fr the adults t d during the cmpetitin time, r, if yu prefer, bring the newspaper, a bk etc. and just relax. Medical Frms: All Scuts must have a cmpleted medical frm A & B and release in the pssessin f the SPL at check-in; Frms must be CURRENT All frms shuld be in a binder with the Trp # marked n the frnt. Please bring cpies rather than yur nly riginal. Binders will stay in the Medical HQ and be returned at checkut Adults shuld really have a medical frm as well. BE PREPARED! Unit Campsites Water: Trps shuld plan t bring 5 gal. water cntainers t keep in their campsite fr cking and drinking. Wagns are recmmended fr heavy transprt frm the spigts. It is IMPORTANT that EVERY Scut brings a LARGE water bttle t drink frm during the mrning and afternn events.

9 Fd: Minimize yur cking prep. and clean-up time. Keep meals simple and whenever pssible plan backpacking style meals. Only ne r tw gear trucks per unit will be allwed t drive t the campsites s minimize gear when pssible. Fires and Cking: Fires are permitted within trp campsites and camp fire ring. (Subject t change) Cking shuld be dne n a Patrl basis with the adult leaders and adults eating as guests f the patrls. Use camp stves nly and please raise them ff the grund.. Please have an adult supervise the lighting f any stve. Only an adult can re-fuel a liquid gas stve (BSA plicy). Keep it simple, make it fun... Clean-up and Check Out All campsites but be cmpletely clean and all trash remved prir t checking ut. Early Check Out will begin at 7:45 n Saturday Please Advise HQ n Sat. Afternn if yu need Early Check Out Sunday Check Out will be frm 10:30 t nn. After the Service Prject. Early Preparatin Use this list fr planning yur Trp meetings fr the next tw mnths. 11 NOTE: Mst cmpetitin challenges will be based n requirements fr Tenderft, 2 nd Class and 1 st Class ranks. The infrmatin needed can all be fund in the By Scut Handbk Packing fr Campree: 10 Essentials List: (a ka survival kit) Mst f the events will challenge Scuts t use ne r mre f the items listed belw. Every Scut (Webels included) shuld have their wn 10 essentials Kit and plan t carry it with them all day n Saturday fr the cmpetitins. All shuld be packed in a day pack Have yur scuts start t assemble them nw. WATER: (At least ne liter either in a bttle r camelback) PERSONAL FIRST AID KIT: including mle skin and MOSQUITO REPELLENT!!!! POCKET KNIFE: All Scuts MUST have their Ttin Chip r Whittling Chip card with them. FIRE STARTING SUPPLIES: n lighters, liquid fuel & cmmercial fire starters WEATHER PROTECTION: Sunscreen, Rain Pnch, emergency blanket etc. COMMUNICATION: Small pad f paper, smething t write with, whistle etc. (Thugh nt a 10 essential, a cell phne per patrl wuld be a gd idea in case f field injury) FLASHLIGHT: with extra batteries and bulb EXTRA CLOTHING: Jacket, knit beanie & extra scks COMPASS: (a site map will be prvided) TRAIL FOOD: Light weight and Hi energy, like granla bar, jerky, dried fruit etc. Packing fr Campree Cnt: Persnal Gear List: All packed in a back pack if pssible and hiked in fr Trp pints. Class A Scut Unifrm with all insignia prperly placed and marked with name Class B shirt if Trp r Patrl has ne (and any special Patrl unifrm accessry) Sturdy clsed ted shes preferably hiking bts 1 set f scks and underwear fr each day plus ne fr sleeping in. Jacket, Rain Gear if needed (check frecast) Cl nights, s bring jacket. Sleeping bag, Sleeping Pad, Pillw, Sweats, r PJs t sleep in

(see previus page) Camp CHAIR per persn r if yu frget, plan t sit n the grund AWARDS & SCORING: Will be the same as last year t allw all Scuts t earn pints fr their Patrl. While it is mre cmplex fr the scre keepers, it wrked well in the fllwing areas: 1.) Addressed the prblem f judge s subjectivity in previus years. 2.) Makes the cmpetitins mre interesting fr lder Scuts 3.) Encurages Patrl Leaders t use Patrl Methd. 4.) Enables EVERY Scut t test their Skills and cntribute t the Patrls success. PLEASE read this carefully t familiarize yurself with the scring. Awards: As in the past, EVERY patrl & den that participates will earn a ribbn fr their effrts during Saturday mrning cmpetitins. As many Presidential, First, Secnd, and Third ribbns as necessary will be awarded in each f the fllwing categries: Highest Scring Trp based slely n Trp pints See List n next page. Highest Scring Webels Den Highest Scring Patrls based n a cmbinatin f Leadership Pints and Skill Pints. AS ALWAYS, In the case f any tied Scres, Identical Ribbns will be awarded. TROOP POINTS: Trp ribbns will be awarded fr meeting the fllwing criteria. 25 pints fr each Trp wh cmpletes the Campree Registratin Frm and submits it, with all fees paid, by Sunday, May 21st. 25 pints fr Trps whse SPL and adult leader attend the May 4 th Rundtable. 10 pints fr each f the fllwing at Check in: SPL takes charge f check in prcess. Checks the Unit in all tgether All Scuts hiked in with gear in backpacks r duffel bags Everyne in Full Class A Unifrm US and Trp Flag displayed at the head f the Clumn All Patrls have Patrl Flags displayed

Only the 4 highest scres will be cunted fr awards. A patrl may pt t either tss ut their lwest scre r nt cmpete at all in ne event. Patrls will earn pints fr Leadership, Spirit Scut Skills Scres will be averaged (divided by number f Scuts in each patrl) t accmmdate patrls f different sizes and be fair t all. This shuld keep the scring mre Objective, (limiting the judges subjectivity). It als gives credit where credit is due in three majr aspects f Scuting & allws every Scut t d his best. LEADERSHIP & PATROL SPIRIT POINTS (Ttal f 50 pssible per event) 10 pts fr having a Patrl Flag r Ttem (dirty sck r T-shirt n stick desn t cunt) 10 pts fr Spirited Patrl YELLS!! ( Nte: Un-Scutly yells will receive 0 pts.) 10 pts fr ALL members wearing a matching patrl accessry such as the same shirt, same hat, they all have walking sticks, they all have rainbw shelaces etc. 20 pts Patrl Methd is demnstrated as fllws: (5 pts each) PL leads the Patrl Yell upn Entering and Leaving the cmpetitin site. PL instructs patrl t wait while he alne appraches judges t get instructins. PL relays instructins t the team and directs the team strategy. PL uses psitive energy t mtivate and encurage his patrl members.

14 SKILL POINTS Each individual Scut gets t select a challenge (Easy, Mderate, r Advanced,) accrding t his wn skill and cnfidence level. This allws every Scut t test himself, and nt rely n the mst skilled individual f the Patrl d all the wrk. Scring will be Objective and calculated n a scring matrix, based n hw many members f the Patrl select and accmplish the varius challenge levels. All Scuts will begin at the same time and be given a set amunt f time t cmplete the challenge. If they fail, they can still cntribute t the Patrl Scre by answering a cnslatin questin fr ne pint. CHECK OUT PROCEDURE: Saturday Night Checkut: Please be packed and ready t g befre campfire s yur camp inspectin can be dne and yur check ut prcess be cmpleted. Let HQ knw that yu need an early Check ut when yu arrive. Sunday Checkut: OA representatives will be in the camp area in the mrning t check yur campsite fr any trash befre yu leave. Stp by HQ and ntify the Campree Scutmaster an hur r mre befre yu plan t leave, s a camp inspectin can be made.

18 Campsite Inspectin Sheet: Trp /Pack Rules: The campsites will be inspected n Friday evening fr basic health and safety items, and just after 9:00 am Saturday while the events are ging n. Scring is by Trp nt patrl. A Trp representative shuld be Sitting and Relaxing at the campsite during the Saturday inspectin. N Adults shuld be fund t be Cleaning up fr inspectin.
