4 Letter frm the Bshway Waugh Pilgrims and Prk Eaters! Be Alert n the Trail What is a Rendezvus and why were they imprtant t the settlement f the west? This was a questin that I heard ften at the last Rendezvus. Fllwing the Luisiana Purchase in 1803 and the Lewis and Clark expeditin in the western lands remained largely unexplred. Canadian fur traders and Muntain Men in search f beaver and ther pelts became the majr explrers f Nrth America. Muntain Men were a majr factr in determining the bundaries f the United States, especially the Pacific Nrthwest. Fur traders frm the Muntain Man-Indian Fur Trade era nt nly discvered the Oregn and Califrnia trails, they became the guides fr America's western expansin and migratins ver the Oregn and Califrnia trails. In 1847, Brigham Yung cunseled with Jim Bridger abut the Great Salt Lake Valley that Bridger had visited in Muntain Men learned t live ff the land, making, trading, r taking what they needed t sustain life and cntinue trapping. In the summer, trading cmpanies frm the east rendezvused with the trappers n the western plains in large pen lush valleys that culd supprt 1000s f trappers, Indians and their animals. The trappers sld their furs t acquire the mney, supplies and tls they needed. The trading cmpanies then returned t St. Luis t sell the pelts and furs that mainly went t England t supprt the beaver hat industry. The trip fr the trading cmpanies tk abut 3 mnths each way! This was ften the nly time each year that the trappers gt t see their fellw trappers and see wh had survived anther year. Being gregarius and having giant egs, there was much celebrating and cmpetitin between the Muntain Men. Frm 1825 t 1840 the Rendezvus were predminantly held in Wyming (11), but als in Utah (3) and Idah (1). Places like Cve and Sweet Lake Utah; Burnt Frk and Lander and Wind River and Green River and Ham's Frk Wyming; and Pierre's Hle Idah, The price fr beaver pelts fell frm $4.50 per pund in 1832 t $2.50 per pund in 1840 at the last Rendezvus. At the same time the price fr buffal rbes dubled in value. Thus the beaver trapping era slwed significantly as there was mre mney in buffal hides. The Muntain Men had t adapt t this ecnmic change and use their skills fr ther purpses. Many f the MM went n t served as military scuts, r guiding westward bund wagn trains, r n surveying expeditins in the west. They were determined t remain free and independent and had the curage and grit t face any bstacle. Muntain men had a shrt life expectancy. James O. Pattie dcuments in his Persnal Narrative that f the 116 men that set ut frm St. Luis in 1824 all but 16 died within 3 years. They met their demise frm diseases, fatal ball r arrw wunds, grizzly bears, wlves, accidents, expsure in severe cld weather, dehydratin, etc. Many f the Muntain men exhibited extreme grit and will t live. Even after a hrrible mauling frm a bear, Jedediah Smith helped stitch his scalp and ear back n his head. Others wuld survive if their wunds were nt infected. Hugh Glass wh was left fr dead then crawled abut 100 miles back t civilizatin with laceratins and brken bnes frm a "Griz" attack. They needed t "be alert n the trail" at all times since danger was everywhere. This desn't sund like the challenges that yung men face tday. Yur challenges are very different but nne the less culd easily claim yur lives, suls, r futures. We live in dangerus times. The adversary is very strng and determined t take dwn as many suls as pssible. It is nt enugh t survive by being resurceful and self reliant. We must "be alert n the trail" thrugh life. The adversary has presented us with pprtunities t be cmplacent, have lts f free time, cnveniences t make ur lives simpler, distractins that are f questinable value fr all the time spent, needing t knw what is in it fr me befre I will help anther, devaluing life, dulling ur senses f what is immral, breaking up the family as the basic building blck f sciety, taking away the will t wrk hard t prvide fr yurself/family, the need fr instant self gratificatin, the lack f respect fr thers, having unrealistic expectatins frm life, being dependant n drugs and alchl, nt having hpe fr the future, etc. But fllwing this path nly leads t unhappiness and destructin. We have been taught t make gd chices. As we keep ur cvenants with the Lrd, hnr and bey ur parents, live the Scut Oath and Law, we can easily adapt t ur surrundings by keeping ur standards high. We have been cunseled that happiness cmes frm beying Gd's laws nt Satan's enticements. Daniel Bne's Mtt was: "... be always sure yu're right then g ahead". 5 Preparing fr the Rendezvus Wh Can Attend? This rendezvus is fr all Varsity units. Althugh specifically created fr thse units in the Mesa District, the rendezvus is pen t all Varsity Scut units in the Grand Canyn Cuncil as well as thse frm utside f cuncil wh wish t attend. Only By Scuts (Registered) and Varsity Scuts age 14 &15 at the time f the rendezvus may participate at the Mglln Rendezvus. In sme cases, if a yung man has a birthday within a few days f the rendezvus; he might be able t participate but specific permissin must be btained frm the Bshway and District Staff apprving his participatin. N yunger persns including siblings, yunger unit members, children f adult leaders, etc. will be allwed t participate in the rendezvus. Older bys may nly attend if specifically invited and then nly as staff - nt as participants. There will be n exceptins! Rendezvus is a High Adventure activity intended nly fr participatin by Varsity Scuts ages 14 & 15. Hw D We Sign Up? Leadership Requirements Tw-Deep Leadership, tw registered, trained adult leaders, r ne adult and a parent (bth trained) f a participating Scut, ne f whm must be at least 21 years f age r lder, are required fr all trips and utings. There shuld be a minimum f ne adult fr every five Varsity Scuts in attendance (always with a minimum f tw, f curse). Each participating Varsity Scut Team shuld als have a Team Captain wh will be respnsible fr leading and crdinating all f his team s effrts. Infrmatin will be furnished t the Team Captains thrughut the rendezvus fr relaying t their teams. Adult leaders will be required t stand back and allw the Team Captain t carry ut his duties and t run the Team, bth at registratin as well as during the activities. The Rendezvus staff will be available t answer questins at any time fr Team Captains. Paperwrk Requirements Registratin (See On Time registratin advantages). The frm and payment are t be filled ut n line at the Grand Canyn Cuncil web site and will be linked at the All paperwrk and frms will be filled ut n line during the registratin prcess. The prcess will be the same fr Mesa District Teams as well as Teams utside f Mesa District. Fr questins regarding Gld Passprt and ther parts f the rendezvus, cntact the Bshway r Segund. Fees See the table abve under On-time Registratin Advantages" On-Time means that registratin fees have been paid n the Grand Canyn website and frms have been cmpleted and turned int the Varsity Scribes n later than February huddle, n February 5, Fees and registratin must have been turned in n time t qualify fr Gld Card status Tur Permits A tur permit is REQUIRED; n exceptins. Bring it t the March Huddle in rder t pick up yur Registratin Packets. Physical Frms This is a High Adventure activity and Caches are required t have "evidence f fitness assured by a cmplete health histry frm physician and parent, r legal guardian" fr every by and leader. Use the Annual BSA Health and Medical Recrd frm Parts A, B, and C fr all yuth and adults. Als, as a reminder, this frm is gd fr ne year nly. The Medical Cnsent Frm is included in Part C the Annual BSA Health and Medical Recrd and each participating yuth and adult must have a cmpleted cnsent frm even if the parent is in attendance. These frms insure that prmpt medical attentin may be given in any case if needed. The Team Captain will present a cmpleted frm fr each yuth and adult participant at check-in r nes that will be still valid as f the Rendezvus may be turned in at registratin n March 5 at Huddle t speed up the registratin prcess. These frms alng with the thers required, will be presented at check-in fr all participants and leaders at the March 5 Huddle prir t Rendezvus. Preparing yur Team There are several things that yu can d as a team t prepare fr this grand event. Thse teams that cme prepared tend t have the greatest success and the mst fun. Here are sme f the ways that teams can prepare ahead f time: Team Leader Training This will allw yur Team Captain and ther team leaders t be ready t take the full respnsibility f leadership during the rendezvus. This is key t yur team s success. Study the Muntain Man This can be dne by inviting a muntain man t yur team meetings t shw and discuss their accutrements r their parfletche. Or perhaps yu may want t visit a clan, d sme reading, use the Frntiersman pamphlet r by any ther means begin t understand what the muntain man was, hw they dressed, and what they used in their day t day life. Each February there is a rendezvus at the Winter Natinal Muzzlelader cmpetitin at the Ben Avery shting range. Rendezvus Leader Guide Mesa District Varsity Scuts Page 6

7 Attend if pssible and check ut Trader s Rw. Yu will als find a gd amunt f rendezvus infrmatin at n the rendezvus page. Make Regalia Wrk as a team t make shirts, pants, mccasins, canteens, pssible bags, medicine puches, pwder hrns, knives, sheaths, scabbards, hawks, beads, stls r ther muntain man gear. This will give an pprtunity t utilize yur muntain man regalia and t lk plew prime as a team at the rendezvus. Althugh it is nt necessary that patterns and clrs f the regalia match, fr the purpse f using the regalia as a unifrm, it is necessary that all bys in a unit have the same items shirts, pants, captes, and hats. Additinal items culd add sme extra pints. Regalia is the unifrm fr this activity and will add pints t thse given fr participatin in the ther activities. (See Resurce Dcument fr mre infrmatin abut specific items and fr patterns). Make Trading Items Wrk as a team r in small grups t make muntain man items fr the trading blanket. This will allw yur team members t trade fr ther items that yu may nt have had time t make. Find what yu are gd at making and make several f them f gd quality t trade. The mre yu put int making an item the mre it is wrth n the trading blanket. Build Teamwrk Wrk tgether t build teamwrk within yur team. Yur success in the Clter Run and many ther rendezvus activities rely heavily n teamwrk. Use C.O.P.E. and Team Building exercises in yur team prgram t accmplish this. Build a Service Attitude We will nce again be lking fr teams that demnstrate Live the Oath, Obey the Law (LTO- OTL) in service, spirit and deed. Instilling a general attitude f service and excellence in yur team will help them t succeed. Lk fr pprtunities at the rendezvus t g abve and beynd what is expected. Vehicle Preparatin Transprtatin fr scut utings is very imprtant. The BSA is very much aware f the special needs fr travel. Being safe is f utmst imprtance. Please make sure there is adequate space fr all passengers in the vehicles yu will use fr transprtatin t and frm the rendezvus. Dn't cunt a place fr a rider unless an peratinal seat belt is available. Remember! Cunt the vehicles yu need by the number f seat belts available in the vehicle. Bring as few vehicles int camp as pssible as parking is limited. Having vehicles that drp yu ff and return t pick yu up may be a significant advantage. Vehicle safety is als imprtant. Please take time t review the Mtr Vehicle Checklist fr each f the vehicles transprting yuth. The Mtr Vehicle Checklist is fund in the Frms sectin f the guide. Persnal/Team Camping Gear During March the weather can get rather chilly in the evening and night hurs. Smetimes it will be clse t freezing in these higher elevatins. Yu shuld cme prepared with warm clthes that can be remved in layers as the day warms up. Als remember that if yu d nt bring a burn barrel that keeps yur fire abut six inches ff the grund, yu will nt be able t have a fire in yur camp fr thse chilly nights. A sample persnal and a team checklist is prvided in the Frms sectin f the Guide. Cmpass and GPS Units We strngly encurage teams t bring cmpasses and GPS s if pssible. There may be several pprtunities during the rendezvus where these devices will cme in rather handy. A GPS is very similar t hw the muntain man used the stars t navigate nly tday we use the satellites and we can navigate during the day. Bring whatever yu have alng and BE PREPARED! 8 Arrival and Setup Rendezvus Rules Bys r adults riding n bumpers, tailgates, hds, fenders r trailers will nt be tlerated. This is a strict vilatin f BSA plicy. This shuld nt ccur n any scut uting and the HQ staff may becme dwnright cantankerus if it ccurs n this uting and may ask yu and yur team t leave the rendezvus. Rendezvus regalia shuld be wrn during this activity and wrn apprpriately. The BSA Field Unifrm (Class A), r Team Specific Unifrm is als acceptable, but regalia is highly recmmended (hmemade Team Regalia is best) A three times three ringing f the bell (r hrn hnking etc.) will designate an emergency. Assemble at yur campsite and send buddy runners (2) t HQ fr infrmatin r instructins. Each unit is required t have a prperly stcked first aid kit and plan n treating minr injuries. Medical staff and facilities will be identified at the rendezvus site fr any majr prblems encuntered. Band-Aids, Pept-Bisml, pain killer in its many frms shuld be supplied by yu, nt the medical staff, s be sure yur First Aid kit is stcked apprpriately and sufficiently. After lights ut time designated n the schedule f events, all teams shuld be in and remain in their wn campsites until reveille the next mrning. HQ staff will be n patrl in the area at times during the night and any team member fund ut f camp will be escrted back t his campsite and the leader ntified. If malicius mischief was invlved, the team may be asked t leave the rendezvus immediately! Buildings ther than the bathrms and buildings invlved in rendezvus activities are ff limits t rendezvus participants. D nt enter these structures withut permissin. Adult leaders and Team Captains will be respnsible t instruct their team members regarding the ff limits plicy prir t attending, and will be held respnsible fr any unit member wh vilates the abve stated rules. Other areas, such as the shting areas, may be marked ff by tape. These areas must nt be encrached upn r serius cnsequences culd result. Crssing these lines will result in expulsin frm the rendezvus. Varsity Scuts are expected t fllw the Scut Oath and Law. Vandalism hurts us all and is against the law. Anyne caught destrying prperty will be expelled frm the rendezvus and their names turned ver t the prper authrities fr prsecutin. This includes plants and animals as well as structures. Pssessin r lighting f illegal firewrks will result in immediate cnfiscatin and ntificatin f authrities. All firearms brught by participants must be turned int the Range Master at the small bre (.22LR) range during registratin and will nly be made available fr use during the activities as apprpriate. Sub-Camp areas will be designated by the Rendezvus Staff. Individual campsites within the sub-camps are laid ut and gruped by ADC. Space is at a premium. Please be cnservative in yur camp setup s that all members f yur campsite will have sufficient rm t camp als. All disputes regarding campsites will be arbitrated by yur ADC r assistant campsite leaders and their decisins are final. This year, n swrds, insanely large knives r implements f primitive trture will be allwed at the Rendezvus. Machetes, maces, cat nine tales, are included in the trture ban. If yu have questins n whether yu have a banned item, yu prbably d. If yu want cnfirmatin cntact the Bshway. Instantaneus cnfiscatin will result. Parking Yur unit will receive parking instructins when yu check int camp at the main gate n Thursday mrning. All unit vehicles transprting peple will g directly t the designated parking area, unlad yur persnal gear, put n yur backpacks, and hike directly t yur campsite. One equipment vehicle per unit will be allwed int yur campsite t drp ff equipment. If there is an imprtant reasn that yur vehicle needs t remain clse, please speak with staff members during registratin fr apprpriate directin fr vehicle lcatin. Please be a gd example t yur bys f being bedient and trustwrthy by fllwing these simple rules. Camp Lcatin Camp Gernim is a Grand Canyn Cuncil, BSA facility. It is beautifully lcated under the Mglln Rim and between the east and west Webber Creeks in the Tnt Natinal Frest. Take the Beeline Highway t Paysn. Cntinue straight at the intersectin f State Rute 87 and Highway 260. This will take yu t the intersectin with Cntrl Rad Frest Rad 64 abut 10.5 miles ut f Paysn. Turn east n Cntrl Rad and travel n the Frest Service dirt rad fr abut 5.5 miles where yu will veer left (nrth) n the Camp Gernim rad Rendezvus Leader Guide Mesa District Varsity Scuts Page 8

9 (Frest Rad 440) and travel fr tw miles t the Camp Gernim parking lt. There is an alternate rute if yu take the Hustn Mesa Rad n the nrth edge f Paysn. If yu want t take this rute, check the maps. If yu are interested in maps f the area, get the Tnt Natinal Frest map r USGS 7.5 minute quadrangle map that cvers the area named Kehl Ridge and Pine. Hike-in Scenari #1: Yu are fully registered and have yur packet. When yu arrive at Camp Gernim, yur equipment vehicle will pull ff t the right side f the rad and await permissin t start up the rad t yur campsite. Place yur campsite number (this is in yur packet) in the frnt windw s we knw when and where t send yu. Yur ther vehicles (with the Team Captain and yur registratin packet) will drive dwn the left side f the rad t the frnt gate where yu will be directed t ne f the parking areas depending n which side f camp yur campsite is n. The parking lcatin is lcated apprximately 0.5 t 1.0 miles frm the varius camp sites. There are clearly marked rads frm the parking area t the camp sites where yu are assigned t camp. Yu will park the vehicle, strap n yur backpacks & ther persnal gear and start up the rad t yur campsite. Yu will be met by the scribes fr final check-in. See "Registratin & Check-in" belw. Fllwing Check-In, hike directly t yur campsite where yu will stay and wait fr the arrival f yur equipment vehicle. Please be aware f vehicles traveling n the narrw rads and give them the right-f-way s they d nt lse mmentum cming uphill and becme stalled. If the rads are muddy, yu will be asked t help push stuck vehicles ging up the rads. Ideally, yu shuld arrive at yur campsite befre yur equipment vehicle arrives. Please help unlad any ther vehicles in yur campsite area s we can get all vehicles unladed within the 10 minute gal. Scenari #2: Yu are nt fully registered and d nt have yur Registratin packet. When yu arrive at Camp Gernim, all vehicles will pull ff t the right side f the rad. Immediately ntify ne f the "Rad Rvers" that yu DO NOT have yur registratin packet. They will infrm yu f what needs t be dne t cmplete Registratin fr admittance int the Rendezvus. See the Registratin & Check-In sectin belw especially the ntes abut the "Ugly Line". Once yur registratin is cmpleted, fllw the instructins in Scenari #1 abve. Equipment Unlading Each team will be limited t ne trailer nt lnger than 16 feet. The rad system at Camp Gernim is nt cnducive t the entry f multiple vehicles. It des nt circulate and return t the parking lt. The rads are nly ne way rads in many places and there are few places t turn arund a trailer. Thus the size limitatin. Once the equipment vehicle arrives at yur campsite, yu will have n mre 10 minutes t cmpletely unlad all the equipment nt the grund near yur equipment vehicle s the vehicle can turn arund and g back dwn the rad t the parking lt. Once it has gtten t the parking lt ther vehicles can g up the ne way rad. Vehicles in Camp N Team vehicle will be allwed in the rendezvus camp site t ensure the safety f bth vehicles and participants n the activity site. All Team vehicles will remain in the camp designated parking lts during Rendezvus. Team Check-In / Registratin will take place at the Parking Lt Main Gate frm 7:30 AM (6:30AM fr Gld teams) until apprximately nn. Exceptins will be made ONLY AFTER PERMISSION has been granted by the BOOSHWAY r Segund. N ther vehicles, such as mtr hmes and trailers, will be tlerated in camp during the rendezvus. Team campsites are set up and gruped by ADC and any cncerns regarding the assigned area shuld be taken t the ADC r his assistant. Sub camp lcatins will be included in yur registratin packets. ADCs will direct Teams t their specific camp site. The stake assignments are made based n the registratins cmpleted by the February Huddle. If teams register after that time the campsite assigned may be "tight" fr all the teams that will eventually attend. Mrale f the stry: register by February Huddle r run the risk f being cramped. Registratin & Check-In New this year: Yur unit will be assigned a check-in time starting at 7:30 (6:30 fr Gld Card teams). The gal is t distribute the arrival times s yu are nt stuck in the line int camp fr hurs. Each stake will have apprximately 8 arrival times fr their units staggered every 30 minutes. That will evenly distribute the equipment vehicles ging t the varius campsites and reduce the cngestin at each campsite. We ask that yu make every effrt t arrive at yur designated time slt. 10 Registratin/check in at the Rendezvus will begin at 7:30 am n Thursday (6:30 am fr thse having qualified fr the Gld Passprt) in the parking area at Camp Gernim and will cntinue until apprximately nn. There will be n early arrivals admitted t the Camp. Please make every effrt t nt be late t the rendezvus. Late check-in reduces the amunt f time the bys have t participate in the events at the rendezvus. The rendezvus site is abut 2 hurs travel time frm Mesa. If yu have nt already cmpleted yur registratin at the March Huddle, please have the required frms (physicals and medical cnsents) filled ut and be ready t present them at check-in time. The presentatin f frms and pick up f the packet must be dne by the Team Captain, with the Cach standing by. All ther members f the team must wait away frm the registratin check in area. If yu have registered n time and gtten yur registratin packets at the March Huddle, have all medical permissin and physical frms, and there are n adjustments t be made, Check-In will cnsist f checking that frms were brught, filling ut the vehicle identificatin and placing it in yur equipment vehicle. (Nice, huh!) Shuld yu need t make adjustments such as adding bys r leaders, yu will need t take a bit lnger s that mney can be cllected and additinal frms and patches can be added t the packet. (Still nt t bad, right?) Finally, if yu have nt registered, yu get int the lng and tedius line and wait fr a packet t be built, yur infrmatin t be entered and mnies t be tendered. Unifrms As usual, emphasis n unifrms is a key part f the success f any Team and we encurage all Varsity Scuts and their Leaders t have a "class B unifrm" cnsisting f the fllwing minimum Muntain Man regalia: shirt, pants, hat, capte. All scuts and leaders shuld arrive in unifrm (regalia) and plan n wearing them fr apprpriate activities including all general assemblies (i.e. campfire, retreat, flag raising. etc.). Rendezvus "class B unifrms" include any number f "early American" cstumes. Muntain Man captes, drp sleeve shirts, frntier shirts, etc. help t add t the experience and prvide activities fr the mnths prir t the rendezvus. Patterns are available in the "Frntiersman" Varsity activity bk and in the resurces rendezvus bklet as well as ther places. Dn t be afraid t Ggle Muntain Man Regalia and ther terms n the internet. There will be a unifrm (regalia) inspectin statin setup in the Hiveran (headquarters) area and team regalia phts will be taken there and thrughut the activities f the Rendezvus. Each team is encuraged t present themselves at headquarters during the rendezvus activity time and have their unifrms r regalia scred. This activity will replace the unifrm inspectin prcess typically dne by the team captains at flag ceremny. A prtin f the pints awarded fr the Muntain Man activities will cme frm the regalia inspectin. Meals N meals will be prvided as part f the rendezvus. All meals shuld be prepared and eaten with yur team as a team activity. This effrt shuld als extend t the purchase f fd items and meal cleanup. Teamwrk will play an imprtant part fr this rendezvus. This includes Team meal times. Campsite Setup Lw impact camping prcedures will be implemented by Teams attending the rendezvus. Dn't dig trenches r fire pits r hles f any kind. There is ne campfire allwed per team. This must be in a barrel r grill nly- which yu must bring with yu. Please NO bnfires! Ashes frm yur campfire will have t be hauled ut by yur unit. Yu may want t bring a stve r charcal fr cking. There is sme wd available at Camp Gernim but D Nt cunt n finding firewd at the campsite. DO NOT dispse f ashes in the dumpster. Campsites Perid-type camping is the rder f the day. Campsites shuld be as authentic as pssible. Tipis r Civil War-style tents are apprpriate. Cking with Dutch Ovens is encuraged! Sharing f said cking with Staff is als encuraged! T make any items which are nt perid artifacts lk perid, they culd be cvered with white sail clth-type f canvas r skins. Clers culd be cvered r disguised as trunks, etc. Yur ADC will check yur campsite prir t yur unit leaving. It is imperative that each unit d its part t leave camp in pristine cnditin s that we will be allwed back. Thank yu in advance. Campfires Lw impact camping is leaving n trace f being there. One f the great dangers f hlding this kind f event in an evergreen frest is wildfire. Each unit must bring a shvel and a 5-galln bucket (t keep filled with water) fr fire safety. 11 barrel in which t build yur fire r g withut a fire. Yur burn barrel shuld be at least 6 inches ff the grund. There are sme permanent fire rings, but d nt cunt n yur unit getting ne. Fire Rings and Burn Barrels are the nly places that a fire is allwed and n new fire rings may be cnstructed. Yu will be required t remve yur ashes t a designated receptacle during camp clean up. NOT in the dumpster. Garbage All garbage needs t be hauled ut f yur campsite by yur unit. The cuncil is very cautius f any grup this size and the impact it will have n the camp. Be very cnscius f ur presence in the facility and be prtective f ur right t use it. Please d yur part t leave nly ftprints, and take nly pictures and yur garbage. Latrines Pit privies r Prt-A-Jhns will be available at the rendezvus site. Yu are required t use these facilities t preserve the sanitatin during this large f a camput. This is a BSA campsite. D nt defecate anywhere but in the privies. The Service Outpst (in Primitive Camp) will regularly resupply tilet paper. Hwever, if yu run ut, g t the Service Outpst fr mre. Water There is water available at Gernim at varius lcatins. Yu may have t carry it a shrt distance. Bring cntainers t accmmdate carrying water. Campsite Clean Up Campsites need t be apprpriately cleaned and checked prir t departure. Yur ADC will assign smene t inspect the campsite befre yu leave. Please leave the campsites lking better than we fund them. Last rendezvus less than 10 items were fund in the campsites when we were finished. This year we want t be better than that. Activities Outpst Activities Each Team r Squad, upn cmpletin f registratin at check-in, will receive a card r "passprt" with the different event areas listed. This passprt is yur admittance int the different prgram area activities. Scres will be kept n the passprt and turned in at the end f the day (5:30 pm) n Friday. D nt lse the card all scres t that pint will be lst! Trading Pst / Trader s Rw There will be a trading pst set up fr yur participatin. The trading pst will have a wide variety f muntain man items fr trade r sale n the trading blanket. Yu shuld bring items t trade fr items n the blanket. N insanely large knives r implements f primitive trture will be allwed at the Rendezvus. Machetes, maces, cat nine tales, are included in the trture ban. Leaders shuld limit the amunt f time their team spends at the Trading Blanket and encurage participatin in the ther activities. Service Outpst All teams are required t cmplete their assigned Service Prject. Prjects are dne as teams, nt as large grups. The Service Outpst is lcated in the Hiveran Area (Primitive Camp) in the center f the Rendezvus. Teams must check in n time fr their assignment, s d nt plan t be in lng lines fr shting r ther activities right befre yur assignment. Service prjects are awarded mre pints than ther events. Maximum pints are awarded fr teams wh appear n time, shw team spirit, and d a gd jb. Assignments are ed t the cach shwn n yur Rendezvus registratin, and a cmplete descriptin f the duties and equipment needed is prvided. The registered cntact persn is respnsible t pass the assignment infrmatin n t the team. There will be n registered team that des nt receive an assignment. If yur assignment is nt prperly cmmunicated t yu by yur ward representative, check in at the Service Outpst fr an assignment. Teams are assigned by team number, nt by ward name. Each stake must prvide an S.O.S. (Service Outpst Supervisr) wh will wrk an assigned three hur shift at the Service Outpst helping t supervise safety and quality f prjects. This must be an adult at least 21 years f age wh may drive a truck and trailer, can walk acrss camp withut difficulty and is a leadership-type persnality. Be n time! 12 Clter Run On Saturday mrning, the Jhn Clter run (a traditin at the Mglln Rendezvus) will take place. This run will incrprate many f the events yu will have practiced and participated in while at the rendezvus. Each team shuld participate as a team in the run. Each team will be given a starting time and shuld be at the starting line 10 minutes early. If yu are nt 10 minutes early, yu may lse yur psitin. During the time when ther teams are invlved in the run, yur team shuld use this time t clean up and pack fr the trip back hme. Please, fr the safety f thse participating in the run; d nt mve vehicles int r ut f the rendezvus site until all teams finish the Clter Run. Dutch Oven Ck-Off In keeping with the traditin f the Mglln Rendezvus, a dutch ven cking cmpetitin will be held n Friday evening at headquarters between six and seven pm. Cmpeting squads and teams shuld bring a serving f their appetizer, entrée, dessert breads and/r side dish t headquarters fr judging. Awards will be given fr this cmpetitin at Saturday s awards ceremny in fur categries: breads, main dish, desserts and Overall Grand Prize. Participants may cmpete in any ne r all f these categries. It will nt cunt as pints fr verall team scres. Judges will be selected frm ur ever-hungry rendezvus staff. Thse judging will cnclude their eating judging prmptly at 7:00pm. It wuld be in the best interest f cmpeting squads and teams t have their entries in as early as pssible after 6:00pm befre the judges get full. Presentatin f the meal and the Scuts is imprtant! 1. Cracker Barrels There will be a cracker barrel sessin at headquarters fr all Team Captains and Caches n bth Thursday and Friday evening at headquarters. Adult leaders shuld accmpany their team captains and will be split ff t a separate meeting during that time. It is very imprtant that all Team Captains attend these sessins because imprtant updates t schedules and activities, as well as ther annuncements will be relayed t them at that time. Flag Ceremnies There will be an All-Team flag ceremny n bth Friday and Saturday mrnings. All participants are expected t be in attendance fr these ceremnies in their Class A Rendezvus Regalia. Campfire Prgrams Thursday Evening This shuld be dne with yur wn District Squad with yur ADC leading. Plan t attend these campfires and be prepared t participate. District Staff will accept invitatins t jin yu and may randmly jin with the campsites fr this activity. This time is als a great pprtunity t have a muntain man naming ceremny. Friday Evening A rendezvus campfire is planned fr Friday night. All Teams are expected t be in attendance at this campfire. It will be an experience yu wn't want t miss. Awards Prgram All teams are expected t attend the Awards Prgram after the Clter Run. Each Team may earn awards based n their perfrmance. Awards will be based n Team unity and Leadership as well as n Perfrmance at events thrughut the weekend. Awards will be presented fr verall and fr several individual events. In the event f ties, multiple awards will be awarded. There will als be special awards and prizes awarded fr Tp Team, Dutch Oven Ck-Off, Individual Awards, Hair f the Bear, and Live the Oath/ Obey the Law (LTO/OTL). Each participant will receive a patch cmmemrating the grwth and fun had at this rendezvus. Additinal memrabilia will be available t interested individuals at the trading blanket. Als, additinal memrabilia will be given t thse wh register n time (by February, 2015 Huddle). Adult Leader Meeting Since there are usually special guests invited t attend, there will be an pprtunity fr these guests t address and train the leaders. The schedule fr this meeting will be annunced at the first cracker barrel. Cleanup and Departure Campsite Clean-up Each unit needs t cmpletely plice their camping area befre leaving. Clean up all trash (even ld litter), replace grund cver, etc. Leave yur camp site as undisturbed as pssible. After all, we are Scuts and are mre experienced in these matters than mst individuals. The Team leaders are respnsible fr seeing these rules are fllwed (Yes, that means the Captain). The designated clean-up time is during the Clter Run n Saturday mrning. Althugh vehicles will nt be allwed int the rendezvus site until the run is finished fr safety reasns, much f the clean up can be dne while the run is in prgress. Check-Out When a team is ready fr site inspectin they shuld cntact their ADC r Campsite directr/assistant ADC (wh shuld be in the campsite) and have them check the site fr the team. In rder t finish n time it is imprtant that teams use slack time in the mrning during the Clter Run t clean up, pack up and be checked ut. Any teams finishing early can check-in at headquarters r the Service Outpst t assist in taking dwn and packing up the base camp. Vehicles As with arrival, nly ne equipment vehicle will be invited int camp t pick up team gear. All equipment t be laded in the vehicle shuld be staged and prepared prir t the vehicle cming int Camp Gernim. Once the Clter Run has cmpleted the vehicles will be invited int the camping areas. All teams are required t remain in camp until the awards ceremny has ended.
