2 Prject Summary: Objective: T prvide safe, secure shelter fr families affected by the earthquake in January 2010 Timeframe: September 2010 June 2011 Budget: 42,000 Backgrund: Cncern has been present in Haiti since 1994, fllwing Hurricane Grdn. Since then we have been implementing develpment prgrammes in health and HIV, educatin and livelihds. There were three areas f peratin: the island f La Gnave, the cmmune f Saut D Eau in the Central Plateau, and in five slum areas f Prt-au-Prince. Since the devastating earthquake f 12 th January, Cncern has been peratinal in several sectrs in its traditinal areas f peratin, such as distributin f nn-fd items (NFIs cntaining amngst ther items, a tarpaulin, tw blankets, ne hygiene kit, a kitchen set and a jerry can t hld water), camp management f thirteen camps, prvisin f water and sanitatin facilities in thse camps, cash fr wrk and cash transfers, nutritin interventins and child friendly spaces in the thirteen camps and beynd. Current Situatin: A huge prprtin f hmes in Haiti were destryed r severely damaged, particularly in Prt au Prince. Peple were encuraged where pssible t leave the city and return t any family they may have in rural areas. Hwever, despite a large exdus, there are still many thusands f families left with n rf ver their head r space t call their wn. T exacerbate the prblem, mst peple are terrified t re-enter buildings fllwing the earthquake. The streets f Prt au Prince are still lined with peple living utdrs r under simple sheeting t prtect them frm the elements. Cncern has prvided many families with tents, but this is nt sustainable and was nly intended fr emergency help. Lack f space is a majr issue in Prt au Prince. T target this Cncern have lked at available sites slightly utside the city where new cmmunities can be set up in new husing. Over ne millin peple were made hmeless as a result f the earthquake; prviding a safe place fr them t live is crucial. The hurricane seasn has nw started and prtectin frm the elements is vital. Cncern is ne f the lead agencies in prviding transitinal shelter fr families and cmmunities wh wish t mve ut f the ver-crwded camps in Prt-au-Prince. In ne identified site, Cncern initially prvided temprary shelter (e.g. tents) and a Nn-Fd Items package fr families. The next step is t prvide transitinal shelter fr bth the families wh have mved frm the camps and assistance t the hst cmmunities in the frm f shelter and livelihds. 2

Prject Overview: Tabarre Issa is a new site which Cncern has identified and secured t carry ut a rehming prgramme. It was designated as a settlement site by the gvernment but the timeframe was unclear. Therefre, Cncern has designed the transitinal shelters t resist strng weather and climatic cnditins and therefre have been built using high quality materials. Tabarre Isse Settlement The settlement is situated 5kms frm Prt Au Prince The lifespan f these shelters is designed t be transitinal, nt permanent. They are guaranteed t last fr three years at least. The benefit f this type f shelter fr the cmmunity is that it is sectinal; i.e. if the family decides t mve, r if the gvernment decides t resettle peple living in camps t ther areas f the cuntry, the huse can be mved with them. A transitinal shelter als ffers mre prtectin fr vulnerable grups than a tent r tarpaulin. Aims and Objectives: T design a shelter that will withstand the elements in Haiti and be suited t the Haitian lifestyle. T achieve this Cncern spke with the cmmunity abut their needs and hw t reduce their fears f entering buildings again fllwing the earthquake. T help with this the cmmunity requested the rf and walls t be cnstructed with lightweight materials. They als requested a veranda t be incrprated int the design as this is integral t the way Haitians live.
