1 Dg Hiking Behavir Vlunteer Training Manual - Buddy Center Thank yu fr vlunteering in the Behavir department as a Hiking Buddy vlunteer. This packet includes infrmatin t familiarize yu with the Behavir area and Dumb Friends League plicies and prcedures. Hiking Buddy vlunteers will prvide exercise and scializatin fr the shelter dgs. Yu will take the shelters dgs t Glendale Open Space Trail r the Rck in Castle Rck fr a hike as a means t prvide energy release fr dgs enrlled in the hiking prgram. TRAINING: 1. Attend a 2-1/2 hur rientatin prgram. 2. Interview with the Vlunteer Services Manager r designee. 3. Attend the DFL 101 training sessin cvering the League s philsphies, plicies and prcedures. 4. Cmplete Hands n AC-Dgs training 5. Cmplete 3 shifts in Animal Care-Dg Kennels 6. Cmplete the Dg Walking Basics webinar 7. Pet First Aid Training recmmended, ffered thrugh the Red Crss. 8. Cmplete DW Hands n training class. Please d nt attempt any f these prcesses r techniques until yu have been trained by a Dumb Friends League staff member. Please be sure t ask plenty f questins. Attendance and Vacatins: If yu are unable t wrk yur shift, please cntact Vlunteer Services at r vlunteer@ddfl.rg. This way we knw that yu will be ut and we may be able t find anther vlunteer t fill yur shift. If yu wuld like t permanently change yur psitin r the day r time f yur shift, please cntact the Vlunteer Services Manager at vlunteer@ddfl.rg. 1

2 Getting Started Please wear yur vlunteer nametag, t-shirt and clsed-te skid resistant shes fr all shifts. Individual hand sanitizers are in a bin n the table at the lckers. Please return the sanitizer when yur shift ends. Clck in at the time clck fr every shift. Make Sure Yu Have: Leash Harness Fanny Pack Water Bttle with Water Phne with DFL number prgrammed in it Dial 911 fr emergencies Dial x7170 fr Matt, x7176 fr Eric r x7175 fr Cra Dial 0 fr custmer service yu may be transferred r party may be paged I m n a Hike kennel sign Select a frm the Dg Running Reprt Yu can lg in t chamelen frm any cmputer with these credentials: Buddy Center: Lcatin: B Userid: bhvl Passwrd: PASSBH Pull the hiking reprt in Chamelen by: In Chamelen g t reprts and then run a reprt, then chse beh dg running participants frm the list and chse buddy Center. It will pull all the dgs behavir has assigned t the hiking prgram and yu can select any f them t take n a run. Select a fanny pack, water bttle, harness and leash fr the dg, please fit with the crrect size. Place a laminated sign in the dg s kennel I m ut n a hike If any patrns stp yu n the hike encurage them t cntact the Buddy Center Shelter if they are interested in the dg yu are hiking with. Yu MUST have a cell phne with yu with the League s phne number prgrammed in it. Weather can impact the ability t hike with dgs. Please d nt hike when the temperature is under 32 degrees r ver 90 degrees. Befre yu leave: Change the animals status in chamelen: Open Chamelen G the Windws drp dwn menu 2

3 Select kennel (the 3 rd ptin frm the tp) In the bx Labeled Animal ID type the Animal ID number Hit F12 n the key bard Put the curser in the bx at the tp f the screen labeled Status Hit F4 n the Key bard Scrll dwn t HIKE-AVAIL, select HIKE-AVAIL with the muse Select k Hit F8 n the key bard t save! Map and Infrmatin fr Hiking with Dgs Vlunteers Yu will be leaving frm the Buddy Center shelter and get n I-25 Nrth fr 3 miles, then take exit 188 t Castle Pines Parkway. Then turn left n Havana, the Open Space will be n yur right. Please see the attached maps fr directins frm the shelter t the trail Cytes have been sptted n the trail. They are usually seen during early mrning hurs and at dusk; hwever they have been sptted at ther time. They d tend t be seen at mre randm times during the winter mnths because fd is scarce. If yu see a cyte stp running. Yell at it t get away and keep an eye n it. Cytes are frightened f yu and will mst likely turn and run. Yu dg may als react t the cyte, pulling hard n the leash and barking, please keep a tight hld n yur leash. Cntinue yur hike after the cyte is ut f sight. If yu ntice yur dg is slwing dwn they might be tired. Please be very aware f the dg s energy and stp if yu feel the dg is becming fatigued. Yur fanny pack will include a small cllapsible bwl and small water bttle. Please use this. Please make sure yur dg gets a drink after the hike. Try t nly allw them t drink a small amunt f water initially after the hike s they dn t thrw up. There are many gat s head bushes alng the trail sides that can get stuck in the dgs pads and especially in between their pads. After every hike, please carefully pick up each f the dg s paws t check fr the pickers and pull them ut if there are any. Hwever sme dgs may slw their walking t start limping immediately after stepping n ne, please be aware f yur dg during the hike. If the dg des nt allw remval while ut n a walk try using treats, therwise walk back t the shelter and find a staff member t help remve the burr. If the dg becmes reactive, barking/lunging twards ther dgs r peple call their name in a lud happy vice and encurage them t mve in the ther directin away frm the stimuli until the ther dg is far enugh away t re-gain their attentin. Keep that distance in mind and try t keep the dg far away enugh frm that stimulus in the future. 3

Where t Hike When yu return: Return the dg t its kennel Change the dgs status: Repeat steps frm abve Select whatever status the dg was n previusly and save. Enter yur ntes abut the Hike in the RUN mem While in kennel screen select the nte mem bx Select the mem type RUN Type in the date, then yur ntes, then yur initials/vl Hit F8 t save Enter the TD: 4

Keep detailed recrds thrugh the Chamelen database f the dgs hike and keep staff infrmed n any behavir prblems nticed. Read and fllw all psted dr signs, wearing all persnal prtective equipment (PPE).
