1 Field Prgrams / Rental Center / Pplar Ridge Challenge Curse / Buldering Wall/ COAR Cavalier Outdr Adventure Retreat (COAR) Meet and get t knw ther first year students n a backcuntry trip in Shenandah Natinal Park. Yu ll hike t waterfalls, enjy scenic muntain views, and stay in a primitive PATC cabin in a secluded backcuntry setting. Nt an experienced utdr persn? That s kay! We prvide all necessary camping/backpacking equipment. We just ask that yu be in mderate t gd physical cnditin t hike with yur pack t the cabin and enjy the day hikes ranging frm three t eight miles. The last page cntains a list f clthing and persnal items t bring, s yu can cme prepared. COAR is a relatively new prgram run by the UVA Outdr Recreatin Prgram with supprt frm the Student Life Cmmittee and Orientatin Office. We began COAR in Summer 2015 as a pilt prgram with three trips. After a successful run in 2015, we are prud t ffer nine trips this summer fr incming students. If yu are unable t attend due t limited spts, yu can still get invlved thrugh many ther utdr prgrams we ffer thrughut the schl year. Prgram activity schedules are psted n the website abut a mnth prir t each semester. Prgram Purpse: T prvide an envirnment that fsters the grwth f meaningful friendships amngst incming first year students. The activities and discussins will help students bnd and lay a fundatin f supprt fr ne anther. Trip Dates (see FAQs fr guidelines n which trip yu can register fr based n the rientatin sessin yu are in): COAR 1: Friday-Mnday, July 8-11 COAR 2A and 2B: Tuesday-Friday, July COAR 3: Friday-Mnday, July COAR 4A and 4B: Tuesday-Friday, July COAR 5A and 5B: Tuesday-Friday, July COAR 6: Friday-Mnday, July 29- Aug. 1 Trip Cst: $165 (Fd, Equipment, and Transprtatin are all included). Registratin: Yu can register by calling the IM-Rec Sprts Business ffice at There are just 10 Spts (5 male and 5 female) per trip, s register early. Registratin ends when trips reach capacity. The COAR retreats are specifically designed fr incming first years wh have JUST attended their Orientatin Sessin s participants begin their COAR trip the evening their academic rientatin ends. That being said, any student wh has already attended their Orientatin Sessin is welcme n any subsequent COAR trip as lng as he/she can arrange the return trip t Charlttesville. COAR 1: Friday-Mnday July 8-11 (fr thse in Orientatin Sessin A, NO EXCEPTIONS) COAR 2A and 2B: Tues.-Fri. July (fr thse in Orientatin Sessin B r previus). COAR 3: Friday-Mnday July (fr thse in Orientatin Sessin C r previus). COAR 4A and 4B: Tuesday-Friday July (fr thse in Orientatin Sessin D r previus). COAR 5A and 5B: Tuesday-Friday July (fr thse in Orientatin Sessin G r previus). COAR 6: Friday-Mnday July 29- Aug. 1 (fr thse in Orientatin Sessin H r previus). 2. What is included in the cst f the trip? Fd, Equipment, and Transprtatin are all prvided. Outdr Recreatin will prvide grup camping gear and can prvide sme persnal equipment as well (as indicated n the equipment list). Keep in mind that fr the hike int the cabin yu will be hauling ALL f yur persnal gear and yur share f the grup gear in a pack. Therefre, we wuld suggest traveling as light as pssible. It s nly 2 nights at the cabin (the first night yu ll be staying in Slaughter Recreatin Center). 3. What shuld I expect? Fr mst f yu, the COAR trip will be a new experience. There will be many ways t challenge yurself during the 3 day trip. Fr sme, the physical exertin f hiking up t 8 miles may be a challenge. Fr thers, it will be living in the clse quarters f a primitive cabin with 10 ther peple. 4. Wh is leading the COAR Trips? The COAR trips are led by student leaders with prir backpacking experience, frmal Wilderness First Aid training, and training by the Directr fr Outdr Recreatin. Mst f the activities are day hikes and the primitive cabins are a relatively shrt hike frm skyline drive (.5 t 1.4 miles depending n whether yur grup will be using Dyles River Cabin r Crbin Cabin). A map f where Dyles River Cabin is lcated in relatin t Charlttesville can be fund here. Crbin cabin is near Old Rag. 5. What is the General Trip Itinerary? Day 1: COAR will begin at 5 PM n the first day (ideally the day yur academic rientatin ends if yu can plan it that way). Yu ll meet yur instructrs at the Outdr Recreatin Center lcated at 119 Emmet St. N, next t the Cavalier Inn. Yu can park here fr the duratin f yur trip. Staff will check ver equipment, check ut any supplemental gear yu need (per packing list), and help start the prcess f getting t knw the thers in yur grup. Dinner is prvided and yu ll spend this first evening at Slaughter Recreatin Center. In the afternn yu ll hike t the PATC cabin where yu ll be spending the next tw nights, set-up camp, and explre the area play games, read, jurnal, relax, etc. Day 3: Yu ll enjy a lnger hike with scenic views, creeks, and waterfalls. This hike will be apprximately eight miles lng and will vary depending n which PATC cabin yur grup is staying in (Crbin r Dyles). Yu ll hike at an enjyable pace t make this the main event f the day, spend time at waterfalls, etc. The hike will be fllwed by a big dinner back at camp. Day 4: Yu can sleep in a bit lnger and pack up camp after breakfast. Yu ll arrive back in Charlttesville by late mrning, clean-up, return gear, take shwers (at Slaughter Recreatin Center), and enjy ging ut t lunch tgether and sharing trip highlights. Yu ll arrive back at the Outdr Recreatin Center by 1:30 PM. 6. What shuld I d t be physically prepared? These trips are designed fr beginner level participants. Yu d nt have t be an athlete, just in gd physical cnditin t hike with the grup. N prir backpacking experience is needed. Physical cnditining: Mild aerbic activity 2 t 3 times a week Get utside! G fr a walk, hike, bike ride, swim get used t being utdrs in all kinds f weather 7. What shuld I d t be mentally prepared? Be prepared t meet new peple frm a variety f different backgrunds Be ready t be a part f the slutin, nt part f the prblem Bring a psitive attitude and a desire t be actively invlved Be pen-minded abut trying new things i.e. Being a leader and a fllwer, ging several days withut bathing, trying new and unusual meals, etc. 8. What frms will need t be cmpleted prir t the trip? Registered participants will need t submit the Statement f Understanding and Medical Histry Frm t UVA Outdr Recreatin within tw weeks f cmpleting registratin. Minrs will need their parent/guardian signature n the bttm f BOTH frms. 9. Can I register fr COAR if I am a transfer student and nt a first year? Yes, transfer students may register fr COAR 5A r B r COAR 6, which ccur after the transfer student rientatins. Since these trips begin several days after transfer rientatin ends, yu may need t arrange transprtatin back t Charlttesville t attend ne f thse.
